With conservative moves to restrict abortion and voting rights dominating headlines, an outsider might be forgiven for thinking it was Republicans, not Democrats, who run Washington. But the most important elections of 2020 probably weren't for who would take the White House or Congress -- it was the battle for control of America's state houses. "The Republicans have been especially good at winning state legislative elections," Wendy Schiller, a professor of political science at Brown University, told AFP. "They smartly focused time, money and energy into winning the House of Representatives back in 2010, and state legislatures." In that year...

Uh, oh! The Taliban have REALLY done it now! They’ve finally managed to REALLY trigger the progressive left! They had the gall to destroy a George Floyd mural in Kabul! I kid you not! Of course, that begs the question: what the heck was a George Floyd monument doing in Kabul in the first place? Well, that’s what we’re going to answer in this video! We’re going to look at what the Taliban did, we’re going to see how the American mission went from bringing democracy to Afghanistan to bringing progressive leftwing values, and stick with me to the very...

Journalists in Afghanistan say that they have been beaten, detained and flogged by the Taliban when attempting to cover protests. Photos circulating online show two journalists from Etilaatroz newspaper with welts and bruises after their arrest in the capital Kabul. One of them, Taqi Daryabi, told the BBC he had been taken to a district police station where he was kicked and beaten. On Wednesday, the BBC's team were also prevented from filming. Mr Daryabi, alongside Etilaatroz's photographer Nematullah Naqdi, had been covering a women's protest in Kabul on Wednesday. Afterwards, they were taken to a police station, where they...

Israel will likely achieve herd immunity for coronavirus in the next month or two, top health officials said as the Delta variant continues to rage through the country. The recent spike in infections coupled with the country’s aggressive booster campaign for the third shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine could mean “there is a good chance that in the next month or two, we’ll reach a situation that is very similar to herd immunity,” officials were quoted as saying, according to a report by Kan public broadcaster this week.

Investors have been ignoring progress toward government-issued electronic money, even as many countries are progressing rapidly toward their own online cash. They should ask two questions: Will the Federal Reserve issue a digital dollar? And will it eventually replace physical bank notes? I think the answer to both questions is yes, and those who agree should be assessing the impact on future monetary policy already, because dramatic change is likely within the timespan of the 30-year Treasury. The main monetary power of the digital dollar comes from the abolition of bank notes. If people can’t hoard physical money, it becomes...

AUSTIN (KXAN/Texas Tribune) — The Texas chapter of the NAACP, along with the civil rights organization’s University of Texas at Austin chapter and a group of anonymous students, has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights alleging UT Austin is creating a “hostile environment” for Black students by continuing to play the “The Eyes of Texas” alma mater song at university events. The complaint, filed Friday morning, alleges Black students have been denied full benefits of Longhorn student life, because the song is an official part of the university, “despite its racially offensive origin,...

Cambridge resident Mark Lang stocked up on quarters in June when he moved into a rental unit with coin-operated laundry near Harvard Square. “I noticed banks that used to allow anyone to walk in and get quarters started requiring you to have an account with them,” he told Boston.com. “I found out there was a national coin shortage from going to a TD Bank who told me they only gave quarters to customers.” He’s a Bank of America member, and didn’t have any issues getting coins at his local branch, but that’s changed in the past few weeks. Last week,...

President Joe Biden will sign an executive order requiring all federal government employees and contractors to get vaccinated — with no options for the unvaccinated. CNN reports Biden will order all federal workers to get vaccinated and end the loophole allowing unvaccinated employees to test frequently and maintain social distancing. He will also order contractors doing business with the federal government to do the same. Biden is expected to announce his new mandate in a speech on Thursday evening, urging all private businesses to follow his lead. Americans remain slightly in favor of employers leveling vaccine mandates, according to recent...

I wish I could post the full text in text format. In the court case it says "over the course of decades, the defendants established a lucrative but sociopath enterprise, where the defendants engaged in decades of human trafficking, sexual assaults and various abuses including financial and economic exploitation, drugging for abduction." The White House is withdrawing the nomination of David Chipman to run the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco (ATF) and Firearms, Fox News has confirmed. Chipman, who had a history of caustic comments about gun owners and worked for gun control groups for years after his career as an ATF agent, was staunchly opposed by Republicans. But he struggled to gain the support of several Democrats, who never explicitly opposed Chipman's nomination but also never publicly supported him either. The Washington Post first reported the story. This marks the second major defeat for one of President Biden's nominees of his term....

September 11, 2001 was a preventable tragedy in a long line of preventable tragedies. So was the disorganized withdrawal from Kabul, which could have been prevented if the Biden administration hadn’t put too much faith its evaluation of the durability of the Afghan government, and instead held onto Bagram as an insurance policy. Seven decades of preventable tragedies have taken a heavy toll on American lives, American treasure, and the American psyche. They have done little to change the structure of American power. There is no denying that 9/11 changed the lives of millions of people, mostly for the worse....

How does the whole NIATONIN thing work?LAYMAN'S VERSIONNiacin and Melatonin work in synergy. The melatonin opens the gateway to cells and the inflammation within the cells. Niacin gets inside and kicks the crap out of it. We are all depleted of melatonin, so everyone's doses are different. The Sweet Spot is when there is No Flush. Not even a tingle occurs. Hence, all the melatonin is being used up as well as the niacin to remove inflammation and restore the cells to homeostasis. The Flush is when excess niacin is not being used by the melatonin and goes to the...

The plastic tax could mirror a proposal from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, which would implement a 20-cent fee per pound on sale of new plastics ________________________________________________________________________________ Senate Democrats are "looking at" and "seriously" discussing a national plastic tax as part of their $3.5 trillion filibuster-proof budget reconciliation bill, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Wednesday. "On the carbon and methane and plastic that you talked about, all those things are being looked at and seriously discussed," Schumer, of New York, told reporters on a press call. Schumer said Democrats are attempting to meet President Biden's "bold goal" of making 80% of...

Now they'll have to explain to a federal judge how this isn't a violation of the First Amendment. The North Carolina ABC's decision to prohibit sales of Flying Dog's Freezin' Season Winter Ale over the beer's label design "seems like a blatant violation of the First Amendment to me," Officially, however, all Flying Dog has been told is that the label is "inappropriate" and "in bad taste." That is all it takes for North Carolina to prohibit the beer from being marketed, sold, and distributed.

Desperate Aussies trying to cope with endless lockdowns are now having their alcohol consumption controlled and limited by the government. Yes, really. “Residents in apartment blocks locked-down by NSW Health are having their alcohol deliveries policed as part of a policy to limit the number of drinks being consumed each day,” reports news.com.au. In a bid to “ensure the safety of health staff and residents” in the buildings, packages sent to residents by friends and family are being searched by police before being allowed to enter. “They are searching all bags and things coming into the building … They confiscated...
