The situation in Afghanistan is another shame on this admin. Withdrawal was never going to be easy but it didn’t need to come to this,” Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, a Texas Democrat and a Foreign Affairs Committee member, tweeted on Sunday. “The US must do everything in its power to help our partners & allies to safety &...

How the pandemic laid bare America’s diabetes crisis COVID-19 has torn a particularly lethal path through the 1 in 10 Americans with diabetes, including many who never caught the virus. That's because when the pandemic hit, people with the chronic disease were already in worse shape than in years. It took the deadly disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic to expose a deeper, more intractable U.S. public-health crisis: For more than a decade, the world’s richest nation has been losing the battle against diabetes. Long before the pandemic, Kate Herrin was among the millions of Americans struggling to control their diabetes....

As construction crews on Monday began preliminary work on the $700 million Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park, a local advocacy group was prepping for another run at stopping it. Protect Our Parks and other neighborhood organizations want the center built farther south because they believe it will better bolster a needier area with jobs and development,...

You don't have to wait for the sun to go down at the drive-ins anymore. Up until now, drive-in movie theaters could only operate at night, but at the newly opened Loco Drive-In in Loudon, Tenn., viewers can see films anytime they'd like, including during the day. Equipped with a 35-foot by 63-foot LED video board screen, Loco Drive-In, the country's first daytime drive-in movie theater, is capable of screening films without the aid of darkness. The screen, affectionately deemed the "LoCo Tron," uses Samsung technology to display a 4K picture, similar to a traditional television. "There's no facility that...

Even now, Washington seems completely out of touch with events on the ground in Afghanistan. Its intelligence officers said the Taliban could take Kabul within 90 days. That was four days ago. They know nothing. One gets the impression of a confused, decaying empire looking with bamboozlement upon even those parts of the earth it rules. But above all of that, above even the political and military incoherence of the American empire, there is the corrosive cultural dynamic. This might just be the most important factor in the Afghan humiliation – the fact that the US, and the West more...

The 5-year-old Israeli boy who was the sole survivor of the cable car disaster in northern Italy that killed 14 people is reportedly at the center of a bitter custody battle between his two aunts – one of whom accused the other of kidnapping the child. Hope Solo is not exactly in agreement with her former U.S. Women’s National Team player Megan Rapinoe’s political activism and accused the famous midfielder of “bullying” fellow team members into taking a knee at games. In an interview with soccer website Goal.com for its program “All of US: The U.S. Women’s Soccer Show,” Solo said she didn’t agree with the current USWNT captain’s decision to bring politics onto the pitch. “I think the rhetoric surrounding this team has been both divisive and inclusive. I guess it’s kind of where we are in politics in this day and age,” Solo said....

Over the past five years, the Pentagon had reduced the American presence to under 10,000 troops. The presence was a deterrent and led to few American casualties. Indeed, over that period, far fewer Americans have died in Afghanistan than residents of Baltimore have died in automobile accidents. Past efforts to nation-building were an expensive and misguided mistake, but not the American military presence which had evolved into a mission set not dissimilar from what the Pentagon maintains in Korea.

Putting aside how you would answer these rhetorical questions, consider for a moment how your these questions would apply to circle of friends, family, coworkers and neighbors. We are largely stuck with our neighbors, coworkers, and family, those people should carry more weight as we can choose who are our friends are. Maybe you are a conservative-leaning person who knows tons of people who these questions would apply to. Maybe you're a liberal and you've never met anyone that thinks this way. The point is just to think about things from a different perspective. ) How many people you know...
