The COVID-19 outbreak in the United States crossed 100,000 new confirmed daily infections Saturday, a milestone last exceeded during the winter surge and driven by the highly transmissible delta variant and low vaccination rates in the South. It took the U.S. about nine months to cross 100,000 average daily cases in November before peaking at about 250,000 in early January. Cases bottomed out in June, averaging about 11,000 per day, but six weeks later the number is 107,143. Hospitalizations and deaths are also increasing, though all are still below peaks seen early this year before vaccines became widely available. More...

New restrictions reflect Beijing’s desire to maintain social control, but they also provide a window on to the strains of urban life. The additional lessons Wang Gang bought to help his only child prepare for China’s rigorous university exam, or gaokao, were not cheap. In addition to group courses from a private education company, he also paid Rmb6,000 ($927) for his daughter to take one-on-one math and physics sessions with a retired teacher over the month-long winter school break. “We are just an ordinary family but we cannot have any regrets when it comes to our daughter’s education,” says Wang,...

“Strengthened for the Journey” (1 Kings 19:1-8) I haven’t been following the Olympics, but I understand that this weekend was one of the main events, namely, the marathon. If you’re not familiar with the marathon, it’s a long-distance race in which the competitors run a total of 26.2 miles! 26.2 miles! Imagine that! What a grueling test of training and endurance that must be! The runners have to be in tip-top shape in order to compete, much less complete the race. And their training has to go on for months beforehand. Long preparation is required in order to run that...

The U.S. economy isn’t going to be locked down, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday. “This is not March 2020 or even January 2021. We’re not going to lock down our economy or our schools because our country’s in a much stronger place than when we took office,” Psaki told reporters in Washington. She credited President Joe Biden’s “leadership in vaccinating American people and getting economic relief to those who need it.” COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have increased across the country in recent weeks, a rise officials have attributed to the Delta variant of the CCP (Chinese Communist...

When Mike Rowe was asked by a fan this week why he hadn't urged his followers to get vaccinated against the Wuhan coronavirus, he took to Facebook to issue a full explanation of his rationale. "The short answer is no - I have not publicly encouraged anyone to get vaccinated," Rowe said in his post. "In fact, I have recently declined to participate in several PSA's designed to persuade people to get the jab." Rowe clarified that his decision to turn down pro-vaccine PSAs was "not because I’m opposed to vaccines, obviously," he said, adding "vaccines have saved more lives...

This document presents considerations from the perspective of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) for implementing the shielding approach in humanitarian settings as outlined in guidance documents focused on camps, displaced populations and low-resource settings.1,2 This approach has never been documented and has raised questions and concerns among humanitarian partners who support response activities in these settings. The purpose of this document is to highlight potential implementation challenges of the shielding approach from CDC’s perspective and guide thinking around implementation in the absence of empirical data. Considerations are based on current evidence known about the transmission and...

They’re partying like it’s 2019. Celebrities, politicians and a couple hundred other “close friends and family members” packed in to celebrate former President Barack Obama’s 60th birthday Saturday in what was billed as a “scaled-back” bash amid rising concerns about the fast-spreading Delta variant of COVID-19. Yet A-listers streamed into Martha’s Vineyard for the swanky soiree at Obama’s $12 million seaside mansion, and few were spotted wearing masks. All while President Biden, Obama’s ex-veep, warned the nation about a possible coronavirus resurgence. “It’s hypocrisy at its finest and shows they don’t believe what they are saying,” said Republican Party consultant...

Iran is only 3% Vaccinated! With how much Valerie Jarrett chats with Iran, you wonder what she told them. Meanwhile Israel is reporting 95% of patients were vaccinated. Between Israel, the UK and Iran; I wonder who got the most pressure from the Biden administration to "save their life from covid" with the vaccine.

Hospital leaders said in a roundtable discussion hosted by Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday that the average age of hospitalized COVID-19 patients is younger during the latest wave of infections. They said that, combined with vaccinations, is helping keep the number of deaths from the virus down lower than in previous surges. Leaders from Orlando Health told DeSantis that they hope the current surge has reached a plateau, according to data from other countries. “This peak went up very rapid… and then fell very quickly so we’re hoping that same thing occurs here,” said David Strong, the CEO of Orlando...

The UK's National Cyber Security Centre would like to politely remind you that three random words are a good, secure password. ... Because everything, increasingly, wants you to have a unique account and password for its service. NCSC recommends a three-word password because it bypasses some of the most common ways that criminals crack passwords. These are things like single words with predictable substitutions (5 for S, or ! for 1) and brute-force techniques that rely on shorter passwords to succeed. "The stereotypical password is a single dictionary word or name, with predictable character replacements," says the NCSC. In contrast,...

The ancient lake, which no longer exists, covered an area of 580,000 square miles in modern-day southern Manitoba, central Saskatchewan all the way up to the Alberta border. It's likely that the 'catastrophic meltwater to drain to the Arctic Ocean' occurred over a 6–9 month period during the Younger Dryas, but they are not yet clear if this happened during the beginning of the event. Using sedimentary evidence, more than 100 valley cross sections, and a model comprised of gradual dam failure with the bedrock's erodibility and the size of the lake, the researchers estimated that 2 million cubic meters...
