Hospital leaders said in a roundtable discussion hosted by Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday that the average age of hospitalized COVID-19 patients is younger during the latest wave of infections.
They said that, combined with vaccinations, is helping keep the number of deaths from the virus down lower than in previous surges.
Leaders from Orlando Health told DeSantis that they hope the current surge has reached a plateau, according to data from other countries.
“This peak went up very rapid… and then fell very quickly so we’re hoping that same thing occurs here,” said David Strong, the CEO of Orlando Health.

Hospital leaders from across the state said in general 95% of the people hospitalized with COVID-19 now are unvaccinated.

Of course, this is a local, rather than a national news source.
The hospitals there have had more than a year to prepare for any surge.
Everything should be fine.
A report with age classifications. Finally.
This roundtable was live-streamed. Listening to it made me even more impressed by DeSantis’ leadership.
Yep. Here it is
It was the most informative of anything I have heard in the past 18 months.
sure they were unvaccinated, but as I always ask WHY?
unvaccinated by choice or is this a bunch of say, unvaccinated immune-compromised Chemo patients etc, who are already to sick to be vaccinated...
It shouldn’t be so bizarre to read a news article that just states the facts...but that’s the reality of the world we live in. It doesn’t make things sound like a bed of roses, but nor does it engage in hyperbole to make it sound like the world is coming to an end. Just states what is going on. Neither praises nor condemns DeSantis.
Thank you for asking that! I hadn’t even thought of that.
America may well outstrip the world in “those who cannot be vaccinated”, as well.
Damn straight.

How exactly would a hospital prepare, over the past year, for another surge?
Do you think the available pool of nurses and docs has increased in the past year?
I am not saying anyone is overwhelmed at the moment, or that they will become so. But your comment made it sound like hospitals can just whip up more beds and more staff. It really indicates some fallacies out there.
Why would they prepare for a surge? The vaccine was supposed to wipe out covid
it did wipe out the early versions. The virus is trying to mutate ‘antibody escape’ natural or otherwise. Same as windows 7 mutated to windows 10 - more subroutines same name
First it was “the vaccine will prevent you from getting the virus”. Then it became “the vaccine may not prevent you from getting the virus, but it will make your symptoms less if you get the virus”. Now, it’s “get the jab even though it may kill you or make you very ill, but you can still get the virus and transmit it to others.”
1. “Tampa General CEO John Couris said in general the vaccinated people that are getting hospitalized from the virus now were already immunosurpressed to begin with.”
2. “ North Broward Hospital District CEO Shane Strum said the more contagious delta variant is contributing to higher case numbers, but that the cases that they are seeing with the variant tend to be less severe are require shorter hospitalizations.”
Just as predicted, the virus is getting less deadly as it naturally mutates.
