There were five passengers and one pilot aboard the aircraft, identified by officials as a floatplane, operated by the sightseeing company Southeast Aviation.
There was mist and light rain in the area at the time of the crash, according to the Coast Guard, with moderate winds and two-mile visibility.
The distress beacon had put the aircraft near Ketchikan in the vicinity of Misty Fjords National Monument, a popular tourist attraction often viewed from planes that can take off and land on water. The five passengers were guests aboard a Holland America Line cruise ship, the company confirmed. The Nieuw Amsterdam is on a seven-day Alaska cruise that departed Seattle last Saturday.

And this was caused by the COVID vaccines how?
Less than 1000 ft ceiling, less than 2 miles visibility.
Legal? VFR? Yes.
But sketchy as hell.
JFK, Jr. comes to mind.
“JFK, Jr. comes to mind.”
Alaska pilots methinks were around 1,000,000,000,000 x more competent than the Kennedy dork.
I am sure you are right.
He had no business flying at night.
Just because you can afford an airplane doesn’t mean you should fly one.
What a shame.
Never hop on a sight-seeing plane that’s going to be flying over mountainous terrain when visibility is less than two miles. Hold out for 100 feet. Otherwise where’s the thrill?
Prayers for the victims.

This methinks ...
After covid shut down most of these tourist supported business for over a year. Those pilots had to go elsewhere.
This was likely a green pilot that hadn’t flown the crash area much.
3000 and 3.
In and out of the control zone: special VFR maintain ground contact and clear of clouds.
On the Alaska Aircrash Investigations series they followed a similar incident, crash while scudrunning on a short hop. Smithsonian channel, Series 1 Episode 1. Turned out air taxi pilot had a commercial but very limited instrument competence, etc. She was recently licensed, recently arrived from the lower 48. So don’t be so sure about every pilot in Alaska. I watched it and was appalled at the pilot lack of actual flying qualifications and experience. Right there with JFK Jr, incompetent on instruments and overconfident in intermittent IMC / scudrunning.
Thats a hard thing to do.
They went on a trip on a cruise line and died in a plane crash.
The odds must be astronomical.
Flew on a similar flight a couple of years ago from Ketchikan 100 north and back. Was only concerned when crossing a large section of terrain because I was pretty sure we’d survive if the engine quit over water.
