White Square Capital says the shutdown is unrelated, but we're sure Reddit is playing a sad song on the world's most overvalued violin. One of the hedge funds targeted by notorious Reddit investment board r/WallStreetBets is bust, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday. The r/WallStreetBets subforum shot to fame earlier this year after its members rallied around so-called “meme stocks”—stocks facing what they considered predatory shorts by big investors—causing their prices to surge to unfathomable levels. The first and most famous target was GameStop, but other companies including AMC and Blackberry saw similar boosts. It didn’t take long for the...

(The Last Refuge) Simon Campbell, a resident of the Pennsbury School District in Bucks County Pennsylvania confronts the school board in an epic confrontation of their brutal censorship. Not only does Mr. Campbell bring the righteous indignation, he also brings the citations, documents and receipts; including the board’s own internal communication. Around this date in the unspecified 18th-century year of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the titular family’s servant is put to death for the murder of their youngest child, William. In the novel, smarty-pants university student Victor Frankenstein has created (and immediately rejected) his famous monster. Not long after, he receives a letter (dated May 12, “17–“) from his father informing him of the murder of his youngest brother. About five in the morning I discovered my lovely boy, whom the night before I had seen blooming and active in health, stretched on the grass livid and motionless; the print of the...

A group of firefighting monks was ready to defend a Buddhist monastery being threatened Tuesday by a wildfire burning in the rugged central coast mountains south of Big Sur. The seven monks have been clearing brush from around the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center and running a sprinkler system dubbed “Dharma rain,” which helps keep a layer of moister around the buildings, said Sozan Miglioli, president of San Francisco Zen Center, which operates the monastery. “The blaze is about a mile away but we've been lucky with the weather, it has really cooled down,” Miglioli said. The fire was climbing uphill...

I know the term is getting overly used of late, but it doesn’t make it any less true: this is Orwellian. I have talked about the Westworld feel of this COVID vaccine drive. That malevolent strain quickly becomes a full-blown infection when anyone expresses ambivalence toward getting the vaccine or comes right out and says they will not receive it. There are millions of people who had COVID-19 and are fully recovered. These people have natural antibodies that are better protection against contracting COVID-19 a...
