  • THE SECESSION REBELLION: A New Levy of One Hundred Thousand Men; Preparations for Another Forward Movement; Troops Under Orders for a Long March (5/31/1861)

WASHINGTON, Thursday, May 30. One of the events of to-day was the opening of the bids for supplying cattle on the hoof, for the use of the Army. It was a departure from the general rule for the War Department to open bids in public, and to read them off for the information of curious spectators. There were about one hundred and fifty bids put in, but some of them embraced conditions which rendered it necessary that they should be rejected. The bids ranged from $3 90 to $8 per one hundred pounds. The lowest bidder was found to be...
  • Latest economic data show red states crushing blue states — and here’s why

The good news is our economic recovery from the pandemic is finally underway. The bad news is that it’s going a lot slower in blue states than red states — thanks to foolish big-government policies. This is the inescapable conclusion revealed by the latest jobs and unemployment data. “The unemployment rate in April nationwide was 6.1%, but this obscures giant variations in the states,” the Wall Street Journal reports. “With some exceptions, those run by Democrats such as California (8.3%) and New York (8.2%) continued to suffer significantly higher unemployment than those led by Republicans such as South Dakota (2.8%)...

On this Memorial Day weekend Kamala Harris addressed the graduates of the Naval Academy. She talked about solar panels, hoped that everyone would “enjoy the long weekend,” and totally forgot to mention anything about, oh, I don’t know, Memorial Day. Kamala missed a golden opportunity to express admiration for all the sacrifices that these graduates will make to ensure that our country remains safe. She also could have expressed appreciation for all the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice on remote battlefields scattered across our globe. Memorial Day for Kamala isn’t memorable at all. Apparently it’s just...
  • China's new three-child policy sends baby and maternity stocks soaring

China's decision to allow families to have three children could produce a windfall for makers of strollers, car seats and baby formula. At least, that's what investors think. Stocks tied to baby products and maternity services soared in mainland China and Hong Kong on Monday after the Chinese government announced a major change to its family planning policy as the country tries to avert a demographic crisis. The Chinese Communist Party's top leadership made the decision to permit couples to have up to three children at a meeting Monday, though state media reports did not say when the policy change...

I was happy to hear that their efforts resulted in their mom beginning to recover. The news should be following up on this to let people know. But, I guess they’re not interested in good news. God forbid another treatment other than a vaccine works against COVID-19. I sent Ms. Fype’s reply to Mr. Keilman to let him know there was an update. I’d show you my tweet to him and his reply but it all disappeared when he deleted his original reply. Why would a reporter delete tweets that were absolutely benign? This is why there is mistrust in...
  • EXTINCT ’80S CAR FEATURES DRIVERS ARE GLAD TO FORGET

Techno-Colored Dashboards One thing drivers remember about the ’80s it was the dashboards. The digital dashboards of this era were meant to represent the future. Unfortunately, all that happened was expensive dashboard replacements. The Camaro Berlinetta was one such vehicle that tried to take advantage of the digital design. Consumers didn’t adapt to this at all and by the turn of the ’90s, dashboards were analog again. The Cadillac brand was another home to way too many digital dashboards. There are some benefits to a digital dashboard but they weren’t major. Most consumers just preferred the regular style of analog...
  • This Caterpillar’s Camouflage Is On a Another Level

    05/31/2021 7:03:23 AM PDT · by BenLurkin · 28 replies
The Common Baron Caterpillar is a true master of camouflage. When it positions itself perfectly on a mango tree leaf, it is nearly impossible to spot, even if you know it’s there. Some animals naturally develop camouflage in order to make themselves harder to spot by predators, but some are much better than others, and some blend into their natural surroundings perfectly. The Common Baron Caterpillar (Euthalia aconthea), a critter native to India and Southeast Asia, fits in the latter category. It has evolved to blend into its preferred background so well that it is nearly impossible to see.

Take that, zombie! Over at Breaking Defense, Bill Greenwalt aims a blast to the cranium of one of the most deathless talking points—myths, fallacies, call them what you will—of U.S. defense policy. Namely, the casual claim that because the United States spends more on defense than the next X countries combined—X usually being defined as ten or upwards—it is so crushingly superior that it need not spend more and could probably get away with spending less on the armed forces. No. It is not the case that the competitor that spends the most automatically wins. You can gun down this...
  • Are Cryptocurrencies A Hedge Against Inflation? Not So Far

There is a lot of noise about cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum being hedges against inflation. Here is Bitcoin against core PCE prices YoY. Only if inflation is truly transitory and declines. Ethereum as a hedge against inflation? Ethereum started its run-up after Q1’s inflation report. And has experienced extraordinary volatility, not inflation-hedging mojo. If, however, one’s risk scenario is of the Thunderdome variant characterized by the simultaneous collapse of a currency and its payments system, then there is no better hedge than private, digital money. In short, Bitcoin’s and Ethereum’s inflation hedging mojo isn’t working. At best, it’s muddy.

SACRAMENTO, CA—Governor Newsom has announced a lottery sweepstakes where five lucky vaccinated Californians will be allowed to leave California for a better state. Each winner, chosen at random, will get a free U-Haul rental and a nice property in another state of their choice, no questions asked. "Do you want to leave this hellhole? Then get the shot!" Newsom said at a press conference Friday. "We'll even spring for the long U-Haul and a trailer so you can bring your car along. Which is great, since your car will be illegal here in a decade." "Come one, come all, step...

The 78-year-old President of the United States, Joe Biden, is not well. He is suffering from an obvious mental decline. Americans are not sure of his exact condition because he has not released any mental competency test results. When he was asked about it during the presidential campaign, he responded in anger and accused the news reporter who posed the question of being a “junkie.” Clearly, Biden does not exhibit the same mental acuity that he did as a United States Senator. Comparing videos of Senator Biden versus President Biden shows he is a shadow of his former self. The...

On this Memorial Day, we remember our country’s war dead. We reflect not only on the why of the great world wars of the last century, but on the equal bravery of the hard men and women who died fighting the jihadist menace around the globe. A trusted and dispassionate military is key to the survival of our country, and freedom can tolerate no other. In Part One of this piece, I argue that American division can now be categorized as a strategic weakness. I also argue that there are three perilous trends that exist as a result of our...

We have today, a group of individuals who continue to masquerade as something that they most definitely are not and, in all likelihood, really never have been. They are men and women, past and present, who have continued to cast themselves as being ardent defenders of our Constitution, as written, and have vowed to fight for all the freedoms it guarantees to the American people, if we agreed to vote for them. But the sad reality is that these very people are nothing but sinister infiltrators working for the other side. Their mission is to get themselves elected so they...
