Size measurements of two neutron stars are narrowing down what kinds of exotic matter might exist in their extremely dense cores.Neutron stars are the tricksters of the celestial sphere. Their age, their temperature, even their size is not always what it first appears to be. But with the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) aboard the International Space Station, astronomers are finally beginning to make some headway measuring these stars’ actual size — and with that, some insight into their strange interiors.Members of the NICER team presented two independent size measurements of the most massive neutron star known at the...

On February 3, 2021, in the wake of the “deadly events” of 1/6, Biden’s new Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered a 60-day stand-down and total purge of the U.S. military’s rampant, undefined “extremism” problem. Though the details of this purge were always kept vague and framed in apolitical terms, it was immediately obvious the target would be MAGA — with the buzzword “extremism” tagged onto various proxies for Trump supporters, conservatives, and opponents of globalism of all stripes.

I was triggered by another poster who wrote, "Send in the Clowns". This reminded me of Frank Sinatra singing the song of the same name. I recall vividly, as a youngster, listening to 'Ol Blue Eyes is Back, watching the album spin on the turntable and me singing the song. Those were the days people had a wide variety of musical tastes. You could listen to standards on the radio, rock-n-roll, country and western and more while holding all of that in common with multiple generations. Here is the full album at the link.

Sunday evening was a family birthday celebration for the Reynas. It was the first time they had seen each other in over a year and the cousins were the most excited. It turned out someone called 911 on the family, stating there were gunshots and people fighting, according to Adriana. Taide Pineda was one of the responding officers who said he did not see any weapons, just Nerf guns. Once they noticed what was going on, the officers...

Explanation: NGC 3199 lies about 12,000 light-years away, a glowing cosmic cloud in the nautical southern constellation of Carina. The nebula is about 75 light-years across in this narrowband, false-color view. Though the deep image reveals a more or less complete bubble shape, it does look very lopsided with a much brighter edge along the top. Near the center is a Wolf-Rayet star, a massive, hot, short-lived star that generates an intense stellar wind. In fact, Wolf-Rayet stars are known to create nebulae with interesting shapes as their powerful winds sweep up surrounding interstellar material. In this case, the bright...

The 1619 Project was developed by Nikole Hannah-Jones of the New York Times that supposedly focuses on the cause(s) and consequences of slavery, etc, but does this "project" miss the target intentionally or otherwise? Before anything like this "project" (opposed by President Donald Trump and numerous other politicians, educators, etc, across the United States) should have even been attempted, much less potentially taught within classrooms in high school or beyond, were the times before the 1600's explored or even much less considered? Those origins could be covered in a "1400's Project" that deals with how the slave trade began in...

The short answer is, it depends... However, putting some of these conditions aside and focusing on population size, the minimum number is likely very small compared with the approximately 7.8 billion people alive today. Smith's research into early human civilizations and space colonization gives him pretty good insight into our apocalypse survival hopes. He expects big cities would be most vulnerable if global civilization were to crumble, as they import almost all of their food and are heavily reliant on electricity. Surviving populations would, therefore, likely spread out to find resources. A surviving population of just a few hundred people...

Thursday, Gov. Tim Walz announced the path to ending COVID-19 restrictions in Minnesota. Walz's three-stage plan will have most of the state's COVID-19 restrictions lifted by mid-summer. Part of that plan includes ending the statewide mask mandate when 70% of Minnesotans ages 16 and older are vaccinated, or by July 1. The state is currently on track to reach that mark by the end of next month. Restrictions will start loosening beginning on Friday, May 7, with limits for outdoor dining, events and other get-togethers ending. The mask requirement will also end for outdoor settings under 500 people. Additionally, the...

A state senator attended a virtual meeting while behind the wheel of his car on the same day his colleagues introduced a bill to punish distracted driving. Ohio state Senator Andrew Brenner, a Republican, tried to disguise his whereabouts by adding a CGI background of a home office during Monday's conference call. But he was busted thanks to the sight of a seatbelt draped across his torso - and by the background momentarily dropping when he leaned back in his car seat. Brenner attempted to defend his actions to The Columbus Dispatch, saying: 'I wasn't distracted.' 'I was paying attention...
