---SNIP--- To be fair, not all of these crucial state Supreme Court rulings have been decided along party lines. On October 23, for example, Republican justices joined a unanimous decision prohibiting county election boards from rejecting mail-in ballots with signatures that do not match the voter’s signature on file. However, the Court’s most consequential decision — extending the mail-in ballot deadline well after state statute — smacks of partisan politics and preempts the state Legislature’s lawmaking authority. While tasked to interpret and apply the law, five justices instead rewrote the law.

Although I’ve lived in Europe since 1998 and traveled widely on the continent ever since, I’d never set foot in Austria until November of two years ago, when I spent a few days in Vienna. I enjoyed the visit so much that I went back in September of last year. I’d hoped to make these visits an annual practice, but the pandemic got in the way. Meanwhile, I found myself writing a great deal about the U.S. presidential campaign, which shifted my focus away from my longtime principal topic, Islam in Europe. Also contributing to this shift was the...

Ethiopia’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning prime minister on Wednesday ordered the military to confront the country’s Tigray regional government after he accused it of a deadly attack on a military base, declaring “the last red line has been crossed” after months of alleged provocations. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s move against the well-armed Tigray People’s Liberation Front raised concerns that one of Africa’s most populous and powerful countries could plunge into civil war. That would send a shock wave through one of the world’s most turbulent regions, the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia’s neighbors include Somalia and Sudan, and the prospect of spreading...

National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow joined Fox Business to warn Americans about the danger of another economic shutdown being imposed on the United States. During the Election Day edition of Fox Business’s Varney & Co., host Stuart Varney told Kudlow that “[w]e’ve got restaurants in Chicago closing down. We got some curfews in Massachusetts. We’re adding some restrictions on economic activity in various parts of the country. Do you think that affects the economy’s performance in November and December?” According to Kudlow, “[N]ot at the moment. I mean, I don’t agree with that point of view. Neither does the...

MSNBC host Joy Reid used a racial slur Wednesday against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, calling him "Uncle Clarence." "If somehow [the Trump campaign] manage to stumble into the Supreme Court, do any of you guys trust Uncle Clarence and Amy Coney Barrett and those guys to actually follow the letter of the law? No," she said. "It is a completely politicized Supreme Court that you can't just trust that they're going to do the right thing." The "Uncle Tom" slur derives from the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin and is a derogatory term for an African-American man viewed as overly...

A Florida man made news headlines over the weekend, after encountering an alligator behind his home that weighed more than 1,000 pounds and measured just over 13 feet long. Corey Capps said his ‘problem neighbor’ has been living in the Apalachicola River behind his home in Blountstown for the past three years. And after a handful of encounters, he was finally able to seal the deal on the beast. “Three different times in the last two months, I’ve been back there fishing, and he’s stalked me. So me and him, something was going to give between the two of us,”...

Many industries use heat-intensive processes that generally require the burning of fossil fuels, but a surprising green fuel alternative is emerging in the form of metal powders. Ground very fine, cheap iron powder burns readily at high temperatures, releasing energy as it oxidises in a process that emits no carbon and produces easily collectable rust, or iron oxide, as its only emission. If burning metal powder as fuel sounds strange, the next part of the process will be even more surprising. That rust can be regenerated straight back into iron powder with the application of electricity, and if you do...

Gov. Charlie Baker’s new mask mandate that requires people to wear masks in public at all times — no matter how far away they are from other people — is catching flack from a health care expert who questions what it will do to reduce infections. “Masks now mandated outdoors in MA regardless of distancing. How will this reduce infections? Most transmission is happening indoors, so ensure people have safer spaces to gather: tents, heat lamps, fire pits. Focus on actual risk, not pandemic theater,” tweeted Julia Marcus, epidemiologist and associate professor at Harvard Medical School.

If Democrats and anti-Trumpers thought that Arizona was a loss for President Donald Trump then they should rein in their horses because it looks like Trump now stands a strong chance of winning it. According to Jeff Dufour, Editor-in-Chief of the National Journal, it would appear that an error in data feeds estimate only 86 percent of the vote has actually been counted.“The latest plot twist comes from Arizona, which had reportedly counted 95%+ of its votes. NYT notes that “due to an error in an Edison Research data feed of results … the actual estimate is that 86% of...

The National Guard is assisting in the tallying of thousands of absentee ballots in Wisconsin. Polling officials in the state’s Outagamie County have asked for at least 22 of the roughly 400 National Guardsmen activated in Wisconsin to assist with transcribing thousands of misprinted absentee ballots into clean ballots, according to a local Fox News station. As many as 13,500 such ballots will have to be transcribed in Outagamie and Calumet counties. The effort follows the state Supreme Court declining to issue a ruling on such ballots. Poll workers will need to work around the clock to meet the deadline...
