That’s no moon A 79-year-old Woodbury resident died early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in the 19th century house on Route 32 where he had lived for 34 years. Clyde Magarelli, a retired professor who had taught sociology for five decades at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J., lived alone and was the only person in the house during the fire. The independent Michigan congressman announced an exploratory committee on Wednesday, a clear indication he is serious about initiating a bid for president. "We’re ready for a presidency that will restore respect for our Constitution and bring people together. I’m excited and honored to be taking these first steps toward serving Americans of every background as president," Amash said in a tweet Tuesday evening. "Americans are ready for practical approaches based in humility and trust of the people." He must secure the party's nomination at its national convention. While the party has held some state presidential preference contests, the primaries and...

Our country is going completely batsh*t right before our very eyes, y’all. There are simply not enough eyerolls. And now that Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has mandated that Illinois residents wear masks starting May 1, there are communities freaking out about what this means for safety. One community in particular has launched a new initiative called “Tip Your Mask” in order to “help prevent confusion and racial biases.” I’m not even making this up. IL folks are now being asked that when they enter a store with their trusty face mask on, they tip it down and make eye contact...

Former Georgia state Rep. Stacey Abrams has strongly defended former Vice President Joe Biden in response to questions about sexual assault allegations against the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. “I believe women deserve to be heard, and I believe that has happened here,” Abrams told HuffPost in an article published Tuesday. “The allegations have been heard and looked into, and for too many women, often, that is not the case. The New York Times conducted a thorough investigation, and nothing in the Times review or any other later reports suggests anything other than what I already know about Joe Biden: That...

**SNIP** The primary was the first major test of statewide elections via mail amid an outbreak. And the results were mixed. There were reports of confusion but no widespread disruption. It wasn’t like Wisconsin earlier this month, when voters were forced to overlook social distancing guidelines to stand in line wearing masks to cast a ballot. Still, overall turnout appeared to be off. The secretary of state’s office said that about 1.5 million votes had been cast as of midday Saturday, down sharply from the 3.2 million cast in Ohio’s 2016 presidential primary. “Within the context of the threat of...

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Democratic presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden was cleared in federal court today of charges that some claimed were based upon credible allegations of sexual assault when the judge quickly realized that Joe Biden was not a Republican. “Well, this looks pretty serious… let’s see who is on—wait a minute. He’s a Democrat! I can find no fault with him,” declared a fourth circuit federal judge hearing preliminary claims. “It is well established in this court that Republicans are the ones who want to silence women and control their bodies. Haven’t you seen The Handmaid’s Tale?” the judge further added...

The Covid-19 virus "acts like no pathogen humanity has ever seen" Yes, it attacks the lungs most; but it also can do severe damage to the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, gut, skin and brain. Cardiologist Harlan Krumholz of Yale University says it "can attack almost anything in the body with devastating consequences. It's ferocity is breathtaking and humbling". We also now know it has two pathways for infection, the ACE2 receptor (which is found in organs throughout the body) and the CD147 receptor on T-cells (found in the immune system). The more we learn about covid-19, the more realize what...

Public health quarantine and isolation are legal authorities that may be, but rarely are, implemented to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. Ill people may be isolated to protect the public by preventing exposure to infected people. Quarantine may be used to restrict the movement of well people who may have been exposed to a communicable disease until it can be determined if they're ill. This could include people who have a communicable disease but do not know it or those who may have the disease because of close contact with ill people but do not show symptoms. State and...

Let’s just stipulate up front that no one’s going to postpone the election in November. Donald Trump certainly won’t delay it, and he doesn’t have the authority to do so anyway. It would require an act of Congress to move the election, and even if Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill agreed to do such a thing, Trump’s term in office ends on January 20 by the terms of the Constitution. That can’t be changed by statute alone, and states aren’t going to rush through a constitutional amendment in eight months to potentially create an imperial presidency, pandemic or...

Former Vice President Joe Biden can't make up his mind on how President Donald Trump should or should not be handling the Wuhan coronavirus. On Tuesday, he applauded the president for listening to health care experts like Drs. Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx. "I think what's been done, appropriately is, it started off talking about the need to have the social distancing, realizing that by starting off listening to the scientists, listening to Dr. Fauci and others," he said. It's like Biden magically forgot that he continually slammed President Trump for halting flights to and from China when the outbreak...

Nashville Mayor Cooper today filed the city’s recommended operating budget for fiscal year 2021 with the Metro Council. Metro Finance estimates that the city will experience a $470 million revenue decline over a 16-month time frame due to the impact of COVID-19 and the March tornado. The decline in revenue during Q4 of fiscal year 2020 required Metro to cut expenditures and spend down remaining fund balances, leaving Metro with only $12 million of fund balances at the end of FY20.

Former Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) says he will not be casting his vote for President Donald Trump in 2020, citing concerns he had with the president before the 2016 campaign. “I just couldn’t support [Trump] long before he started to run. The birtherism thing was just too much for me. And then it piled on,” Flake, a vocal critic of Trump, told the Washington Post. Flake also warned that a second Trump term could deter younger voters from the GOP, especially on issues concerning the environment and immigration. “So for young people who’ve grown up around minorities or had a...
