Claims to interlocutors that law enforcement has damning info on Lieberman, used it to 'extort' him into leaving right-wing bloc... "There's no democracy here, but a government of bureaucrats and jurists," he said... "They want to see me sitting in jail," he said in one private conversation, where "they" meant the entire system. Even before the judges hearing his criminal cases were chosen, he was convinced that a hidden hand would arrange the most "left-wing" and least lenient bench possible. Before the elections, when several ministers asked why Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman Avigdor Lieberman sought to topple him, Netanyahu repeatedly blamed...

The figures coming out of Indonesia are grim – 469 dead from Covid-19, the highest fatality count in Asia outside China, and another 5,136 people infected. But in the nation’s capital Jakarta, where two-thirds of the country’s cases originated, residents report young people continuing to socialise at street food stalls and cafes, despite President Joko Widodo introducing new social distancing measures on April 7. Gatherings of more than five people have been banned, there are limits on the number of people who can use public transport, and public spaces have been closed – but a lack of enforcement of these...

Firefighters rescued a truck driver whose tractor-trailer was nearly blown off a bridge in Virginia, leaving his cab dangling 70 feet over a river. A large wind gust caused the driver, Wayne B. Boone, to lose control Monday morning, Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya told news outlets. He had to be pulled from his cab, which was dangling off the side of Interstate 64's High Rise bridge over the Elizabeth River, the Chesapeake Fire Department said in a Twitter post. It said firefighters used a series of complex rope maneuvers to reach the driver and pull him to safety...

The emerging global movement of rightwing populists is guilty of many things but ideological incoherence in choosing their enemies is generally not one of them. Whether it is Steve Bannon bashing Pope Francis, Matteo Salvini attacking the “do-gooders” in humanitarian NGOs or Marine Le Pen venting against the dull technocrats in Brussels, the populists go after a predictable, well-calculated set of targets. If anyone chooses their enemies well, it’s them.

Some of America's most beautiful spaces -- our colleges and university campuses -- are closed and empty these days. Schools have canceled their spring semesters and commencements because of the COVID-19 virus; classrooms, dormitories and athletic facilities have been closed. Students at many institutions are told that they can continue to access instruction online. But exams and grades have been canceled in many cases, and one suspects that online viewership will be sporadic and concentration intermittent. But students shouldn't hover around their home mailboxes waiting for an envelope with a tuition rebate check. And students -- and parents -- who...

The mission will launch astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the International Space Station on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft in a final test flight for NASA. Liftoff is set for 4:32 p.m. EDT (2032 GMT) from historic Launch Pad 39A, the same site used for NASA's Apollo and shuttle missions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now “actively looking into” results from universal COVID-19 testing at a Boston homeless shelter. The broad-scale testing took place at the Pine Street Inn homeless shelter in Boston’s South End a week and a half ago because of a small cluster of cases there. Of the 397 people tested, 146 people tested positive. Not a single one had any symptoms.

What? And leave the safety of her twin $12,000 freezers? Donald Trump has signaled over the last twenty-four hours that if Nancy Pelosi wants to play hardball over an issue of replenishing the Paycheck Protection Program from afar, he’s willing to play hardball, too. For the second day in a row, Trump demanded that Pelosi and Chuck Schumer bring Congress back into session and start dealing with the COVID-19 crisis in person. The “ENDLESS VACATION” is a nice touch, but I still prefer the Brave Sir Robin Congress: Today people started losing their jobs because of Crazy Nancy Pelosi, Cryin’...

The daughter of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán appeared on a Facebook live stream Tuesday packing boxes with food and supplies for the elderly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic in Mexico. Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán was then accompanied by her team of workers as she visited various poor neighborhoods to deliver the aid across the Guadalajara metropolitan area. 'You have toilet paper. There are flavored cornstarches. There is also seasoning for noodle soups and noodle soups,' she said. 'We have three different types of soups. There are crackers, oil, sugar, beans and rice, too.'

Two stem cell experts have found an abundance of abnormal stem cells in the lungs of patients who suffer from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a leading cause of death worldwide. "We actually found that three variant cells in all COPD patients drive all the key features of the disease. One produces tremendous amounts of mucins which block the small airways, while the other two drive fibrosis and inflammation which together degrade the function of the lung," Xian reports in the May 14 issue of the journal Cell. "These patients have normal stem cells, though not many of them, but...

Earlier this week President Trump was asked why the death toll from the coronavirus in the United States is so high relative to our percentage of the world population. Trump responded by casting doubt on the official numbers released by some other countries. “Does anybody really believe the numbers of some of these countries?” he said. It’s not the first time he has suggested China’s death toll is “a little bit on the light side.” Today, China revised the death toll in Wuhan upward by 50 percent. Officials in Wuhan, where the virus was first reported late last year,...

o member of the so-called “Squad” is a stranger to controversy, but Ilhan Omar continues taking it to the next level. Just last month Omar announced her marriage to Tim Mynett on Instagram after denying that the two had a relationship for months. Mynett’s prior wife alleged in court papers that he walked out on their marriage after admitting to having an affair with Omar, which Omar denied. Omar filed for divorce from her prior husband Ahmed Hirsi less than two months before the affair allegations were brought to light. Between October and December of last year, Omar’s campaign committees...

OK. Let's get to the chase. I'm a pilot. I've been flying almost 45 years. I know many commercial pilots who work for the big carriers. Some do international flights, the Far East, Europe, etc. At least four of them now have told me they have had this crap, some as early as November of last year. High fever, bad dry cough, and body aches. They all said they were sicker than a dog. They told me they have flown boatloads of people from China and Europe to here before the travel ban. They tell me they passed it around...

Amid rapid growth in AI deployments across a variety of industry sectors, Intel has decided to address the skills shortage in AI-savvy developers by partnering with online technology learning platform Udacity to offer a course in edge AI for developers. “Historically, students have learned how to build and deploy deep learning models for the cloud. With Udacity, we are training AI developers to go where the data is generated in the physical world: the edge,” said Jonathan Ballon, Intel vice president and general manager, Internet of Things Group. “Optimizing direct deployment of models on edge devices requires knowledge of unique...

The Religion of Immoralism By MAX EASTMAN The notion of Karl Marx as a noble brooder over man's hopes is dispelled in this account of his invention and philosophic justification of the ruthless methods of modern Communism. With Stalin gone it has become necessary to find a new focus for our hostility to the unscrupulous and inhuman behavior of the Communists. I wish it might be focused on the real cause of the trouble: Marxism. Much force of argument is wasted among Western intellectuals through a wish to exempt Marx from responsibility for this return to barbarism. Realpolitik in the evil...

You know by now that democrats have not contributed a single positive thing to the Wuhan virus disaster. Their newest offense is to allow the PPP to run out of money. Pelosi bragged about this while eating her $13 per pint ice cream stored in her $20,000 Sub Zero refrigerators. We all have found our ways to keep our spirits up during these trying times. Mine just happens to fill up my freezer. #LateLateShow pic.twitter.com/dqA32d5lU1— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) April 14, 2020 Steve Guest: "The Paycheck Protection Program ran out of money this morning because Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi, blocked...

Fox News' Tucker Carlson sounded off on Democrat Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Thursday night and accused her of engaging in a "weird arbitrary fascism." "When the coronavirus hit Michigan in force last month, Whitmer had no clue what to do. So, she responded with a mixture of comical ineptitude and a weird kind of arbitrary fascism," Carlson said. "She banned the sale of carpets and paint and potted plants. She told people they couldn't fish or go to church or drive alone to their own homes. But at the same time Whitmer kept liquor stores, weed shops lotto kiosks open...
