There were more side effects in the group of 75 people who took hydroxychloroquine, but they were mostly mild, the most common being diarrhea. The researchers, led by Wei Tang of Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai, wrote that the medicine’s anti-inflammatory effects probably helped alleviate patients’ symptoms.

Doctors who prescribe an anti-malarial drug being touted as a potential COVID-19 treatment will face a $13,000 fine due to new prescription rules. The rules, brought into effect in Queensland on Tuesday, means that clinicians are banned from prescribing hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment. Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-malarial drug now used to treat anti-immune conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. There is no solid evidence that the drug is effective against COVID-19, but Federal Health Minister said that there has been “some promising research so far”. The new restrictions were brought in place after doctors began prescribing the drug...

One year ago, on March 5, I became an American citizen, just a few miles away from the Alamo. It is only fitting that this special milestone in my life also happened just three days after the anniversary of Texas’ Independence, because I found in Texas what I was looking for in America. To me, Texas has become similar to these little enclaves of foreign culture that you find in big U.S. cities such as Little Italy or Little Korea. It has become my “Little America.” Let me explain. Every year, millions of people around the world dream of and...

Prayers up for all the families suffering from the impact of this virus. And we're still praying that the spread starts fading with the warmer Spring weather and that an effective treatment and vaccine are developed before the next flu season starts. And we pray that our people are allowed to go back to work very soon and that our economy comes roaring back. Meanwhile, we may be hurt and slowed down somewhat, but we have faith in the long-run that "what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger." God willing, America will survive and we will survive and we...

New York City included thousands of deaths, some of which happened happened weeks ago, in its updated COVID-19 death count on Tuesday. The newly counted deaths are presumed to be caused by COVID-19 because doctors were confident enough to list the disease or “an equivalent” on the patients’ death certificates despite the diagnosis not being confirmed by laboratory tests. Officials added 3,778 “probable” deaths to the COVID-19 count (pdf), taking a number that would have been 6,589 to over 10,000. The shift came after fire officials said there were hundreds of people dying at home every day in recent weeks....

VIDEO As was completely predictable, despite his previous vehement opposition to Joe Biden, Cenk Uygur is now on the road to a laughably humiliating crawlback towards supporting the man he recently denounced as the Establishment Candidate who had no chance of winning the general election. You can get a sense of just how far poor Cenk is having to crawl by contrasting his April 14 rationalizations on possibly supporting Biden with his Super Tuesday MELTDOWN last month in which he called Biden a senile liar. The stark contrast of the two Cenks that you see here makes for great...

South Korea has been holding an election unlike any other. Voters wore masks and stood at least 1m apart. They had their temperature taken, disinfected their hands and wore plastic gloves. Only then were they given their voting slip and allowed to head into the booth to cast their ballot. These are just some of the measures taken to allow the scheduled National Assembly election to take place during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Another study conducted by researchers at the University of Utah found that “critically ill patients with lung injury requiring mechanical ventilation may benefit from administration of ivermectin,” ABC News reported. “We noted a lower mortality and reduced health care resource use in those treated with ivermectin,” wrote lead author Dr. Amit Patel. And at Broward Health Medical Center in Florida, Dr. Jean-Jacques Rajter has already been using ivermectin in addition to hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin and zinc sulfate to treat his COVID-19 patients, according to NBC Miami. “If we get to these people early, and what I mean by that is if...

April 15 (UPI) -- The IRS rolled out a new tool Wednesday that allows Americans to check the status of their stimulus payments, and tens of millions are expected to have their money by the end of the day. The agency launched the "Get My Payment" web page, where Americans can track their payments by entering tax return information for either 2018 or 2019. The U.S. Treasury began depositing the payments electronically last Friday. The first recipients are eligible U.S. taxpayers who filed a tax return for either of the last two years. For those, the funds will automatically appear...

The media tell us China "beat coronavirus." I don't believe it. The Chinese government lies. AEI's Derrek Scissors argues that they've underreported the number of COVID-19 cases by millions. Still, it's possible that China has the virus under control. But at what cost? Most of us in America now practice "social distancing." I've barely left my house in a month. I do that voluntarily. Forty-two states do have some sort of shelter-in-place orders, but most of American's social distancing is voluntary. Not so in China. China's dictators are quick to take extreme measures against whatever they see as a problem....

U.S. retail sales suffered a record drop in March as mandatory business closures to control the spread of the novel coronavirus outbreak depressed demand for a range of goods, setting up consumer spending for its worst decline in decades. The report from the Commerce Department on Wednesday came as millions of Americans have been thrown out of work, and strengthened economists' conviction that the economy is in deep recession. States and local governments have issued "stay-at-home" or "shelter-in-place" orders affecting more than 90% of Americans to curb the spread of COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the virus, and abruptly...

President Trump on Tuesday met with a handful of recovered coronavirus patients who traveled from all over the country, including from states with stay-at-home orders, to meet with him. Some of them had taken hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malarial drug the president has been touting. Mr. Trump asked the patients to discuss their experience with the drug, if they took it. Some patients have anecdotally said it has helped them, although clinical trials about the effectiveness and risks of taking the drug have yet to be completed. One of the participants at Tuesday's roundtable was a Democratic state representative, Karen Whitsett, who...

Researchers are working as quickly as science will allow to determine whether hydroxychloroquine, a decades-old malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump as a potential “game changer” in curtailing the Covid-19 pandemic, is effective in fighting the coronavirus. Federal health regulators have fast-tracked approvals for coronavirus research, allowing scientists across the nation to skip through months of red tape on potential treatments and vaccines for the deadly virus. On March 24, researchers at NYU Langone launched one of the nation’s largest hydroxychloroquine studies and enrolled their first patient 10 days later. It’s one of more than a dozen formal studies...
