When I was a registered midwife in Australia (for just over 3 decades, interspersed with time in Indonesia), I learnt many interesting things. Attitudes to the presence of a male in the profession were open and warmer in Catholic hospitals than in public hospitals. Generally speaking Catholic hospitals had a touch of warmth in most things compared to the secular places. Vietnamese people were also very open to a male presence in midwifery compared with any other ethnic group. The Vietnamese men were the ones least likely to be uncomfortable if the midwife was a male. It was probably a...

Something has gone wrong in Britain. The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse has found that pedophiles in the British government were allowed to prey on children for decades, and political institutions turned a blind eye to the systemic abuse. The inquiry was commissioned to determine whether or not Westminster “turned a blind eye” to the abuse, and the inquiry ultimately came to the conclusion that safeguards “failed significantly” in preventing the pedophilia from occurring and being properly investigated. “It is clear that there have been significant failures by Westminster institutions in their dealing with, and confrontation of, allegations of...

When Sebastian Arcos and family members tried to travel from Cuba to the United States, authorities stopped them in what turned out to be a sting operation to arrest one of his uncles, who had advocated and fought for Fidel Castro’s revolution more than 20 years earlier. That was Dec. 31, 1981, and for trying to leave the island nation, Arcos was jailed for a year. His uncle spent seven years in jail. His father, also a political supporter of the communist revolution and like many other citizens soured on the broken promises of democracy, was imprisoned for six years....

The economic indicators all show the economy is booming. Unemployment is at record lows. The stock market is seeing record highs. Wages are up, and taxes are down. Stifling regulations are being lifted. Everything seems to be working just fine. There is much truth in this perception of a boom. Part of this can be attributed to less government interference and taxation. Unnecessary government regulation and spending always hurt the economy. When markets are freer, profits tend to come galloping back. And much has galloped back. However, beneath the surface, major problems threaten the boom. These problems have long plagued...

President Trump knew that it was unreasonable and unsafe for the US economy to be so dependent on China. He was ridiculed for his tariffs which now appear to have prevented a major economic catastrophe due to US companies moving their operations out of China over the past couple years. Last night, Melissa Francis from FOX Business Network, was on Tucker Carlson Tonight and she shared this observation: Because he [President Trump] started this trade war that was costing companies money, they went out and set up different ways that, well maybe we can get this from here, here’s our...

Did the Department of Justice leak or arrange the leak of Michael Flynn’s call with Sergey Kislyak to get around the FBI’s efforts to keep secret the investigation of Flynn? One of the great mysteries of the Trump-Russia saga that remains unsolved three years later, or at least uncharged, is who leaked Gen. Michael Flynn’s calls with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. As incoming national security advisor, Flynn spoke with numerous foreign officials in the lead-up to inauguration. This included a conversation with Kislyak on Dec. 29, 2016 in which they discussed, among other things, measures taken by the Obama administration...

I think that when the media report that Sanders plans new spending of $60 trillion over 10 years, the eyes of many people will glaze over. What's a trillion? A trillion is one thousand billion, and the population of the United States is about 1/3 of a billion. Therefore, every trillion of annual spending amounts to $3000 of spending per American. So extra annual spending of $6 trillion that Sanders has proposed amounts to $18,000 of spending per American. Do Americans think a family of 4 can afford $72,000 more in taxes a year? Even if you wrongly assume that...

February 26 2020 Ash Wednesday Reading 1 Jl 2:12-18 Even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God. Perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing, Offerings and libations for the LORD, your God.Blow the trumpet in Zion! proclaim a fast, call an assembly; Gather the people, notify the congregation; Assemble the elders, gather the children and the...

The coronavirus that emerged from Wuhan, China, last year is causing alarm across the world, with fear that this could become the next pandemic. Late last month, the World Health Organization declared the virus, named COVID-19, a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" and urged an immediate international response. It advised its member states to put in place national preparedness plans and procedures for identifying and responding to any COVID-19 cases that might present. The death toll of more than 2,600 people far exceeds that of the SARS outbreak nearly 17 years ago.

Mitt Romney, who was the only Republican senator to break party lines and vote in favor of Donald Trump being impeached at his Senate trial earlier this month, is now attacking the president again. This time, the Utah senator is claiming that the Trump administration is totally unprepared for a potential coronavirus outbreak. As Trump tried to tamp concerns over the coronavirus in New Delhi, saying that the situation was “under control” and is a “problem that’s going to go away,” Romney was confronting officials in Washington D.C. at a private briefing on the virus. As a member of the...

Almost half of all blacks and Hispanics who attend Harvard were admitted because of illegal racial preferences in admissions according to a brief just filed by the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice has filed a brief in a federal lawsuit filed by Students For Fair Admissions that says Harvard's race-based admissions process violates federal law. This filing marks a extreme departure from the Obama Civil Rights Division that spent significant time and resources seeking to expand the use of race in decision making. The brief filed by the Justice Department says Harvard "considers applicants’ race at virtually every...

25m CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus, including the very early closing of our borders to certain areas of the world. It was opposed by the Dems, “too soon”, but turned out to be the correct decision. No matter how well we do, however, the..... ....Democrats talking point is that we are doing badly. If the virus disappeared tomorrow, they would say we did a really poor, and even incompetent, job. Not fair, but it is what it is. So far, by the way, we have not had one death. Let’s keep it that...

The Democratic presidential candidate said he spent $100 million to get it done New York billionaire and Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg bragged during a primary debate Tuesday night that with the tens of millions he spent to get Democrats elected in 2018, he "bought" back the House of Representatives for the party. "Let's just go on the record," Bloomberg said, speaking from the stage in Charleston, South Carolina. "They talk about 40 Democrats, 21 of those were people that I spent $100 million to help elect. All of the new Democrats that came in, put [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi...
