A newly elected member of the St. Louis County Council chose to be sworn in with a Dr. Seuss book rather than a Bible. Earlier this month, Democrat Kelli Dunaway handily beat Republican Alderman Amy Poelker for the 2nd District seat, garnering 60 percent of the vote. Since election regulations don't require politicians to swear their oath of office on a Bible, Dunaway opted to lay her hand on Dr. Seuss' 1990 bestseller Oh, the Places You'll Go!Her son and daughter held the book for during her swearing-in ceremony on August 13. A former field organizer at Obama for America,...

New research published today in the journal Parasitology shows how the prehistoric inhabitants of a settlement in the freshwater marshes of eastern England were infected by intestinal worms caught from foraging for food in the lakes and waterways around their homes. The Bronze Age settlement at Must Farm, located near what is now the fenland city of Peterborough, consisted of wooden houses built on stilts above the water. Wooden causeways connected islands in the marsh, and dugout canoes were used to travel along water channels. The village burnt down in a catastrophic fire around 3,000 years ago, with artefacts from...

Iconoclastic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard did the unforgiveable in the eyes of the hidebound Democratic Party establishment: She knocked down one their favorites, Kamala Harris. ... Now, through the miracle of rule-rigging, the Democratic establishment has maneuvered to exact a price from her: No appearance at the next Democratic debate. No more taking down the next favorite. ... Isn't Julian Castro polling around something like zero? Maybe he's there for affirmative action purposes, alongside his lockstep extremism. Two, Google seems to have already done a number on Gabbard, taking down her paid-for campaign ads during the first debate when Internet viewers'...

Barack and Michelle Obama are close to buying a massive Martha’s Vineyard estate. TMZ reports that the former president and first lady are in escrow — aka in contract to purchase — a 29-acre beachfront plot with a 6,892-square-foot main house. The Obamas were initially just renting the seven-bedroom, 8½-bathroom spread for summer 2019, but apparently loved it so much that they made an offer. It was most recently on the market asking $14.85 million, but the Obamas are apparently paying less. The property at 79 Turkeyland Cove Road in Edgartown, Mass. — owned by Boston Celtics chief Wyc Grousbeck...

Amid numerous political scandals and an unfurling trade war with China that shows little sign of de-escalation, President Donald Trump lacks the broad confidence of the American public, according to a new AP-NORC poll. Sixty-two percent of U.S. adults disapprove of the way Trump is handling his job, compared with 36 percent who approve. Predictably, the partisan divides swing favorably or unfavorably towards the president depending on political affiliation. But, notably, the coveted class of self-identified political independents remains opposed to the president, with 65 percent disapproving of the way he is handling his job. Trump's approval ratings have not...

“I don’t think he’ll be doing alligator hunting much anymore,” says Justin''s brother, Ryan Perchalski. “The bones are turned to mush, obviously with an 11-foot alligator.” “Justin reached over the side of the boat to pull on the line, to bring the gator up, when the gator came out of the water, grabbing his right hand,” he explains. Since they were hunting, FWC says the reptile was not considered a nuisance gator, so they will not attempt to trap it. Hunting season started Thursday and continues through November 1. FWC reminds people to be cautious when looking for alligators.

In the email, published in the New Republic magazine, he wrote: 'I walked in to find him in a sweatsuit and a British guy in a suit with suspenders [braces], getting foot massages from two young well-dressed Russian women.' He says the Brit, named 'Andy'...

In a huge procedural win for Laura Loomer, the D.C. Court of Appeals has agreed to hear the merits of her lawsuit against Google. Google had sought to have the lower court’s ruling summarily affirmed, which is what happens when a case is weak and the Court of Appeals concludes it would be a waste of time to hear the case. The D.C. Court of Appeals issued an order saying, “The merits of the parties’ positions are not so clear as to warrant summary action.” In layman’s terms, this means Laura Loomer has a real case. She may lose. She...

There’s her backtracking on busing and her waffling on Medicare for All, not to mention her prosecutorial scandals. A new national CNN poll of the 2020 Democratic primary has some pretty brutal numbers for Kamala Harris. When CNN last polled the presidential race shortly after the first Democratic debate in June, Harris was on Joe Biden’s heels, trailing just 17 percent to 22 percent. But according to the latest survey by CNN, conducted August 15 to 18, Biden has rebounded to 29 percent, while Harris has dropped all the way down to 5 percent, tied for fourth place with South...

One of Jeffrey Epstein’s public accusers claims she had to give a foot massage to The Simpsons creator Matt Groening while on the rich criminal’s private jet, though she was repulsed by the cartoonist’s “crusty toes,” according to newly-released court documents. Hours prior to Epstein’s August 10th death, more than 2,000 pages of documents were released, related to a since-settled lawsuit against Epstein’s ex-girlfriend by Virginia Giuffre, one of his accusers. The records contain graphic allegations against Epstein, as well as the transcript of a 2016 deposition of the millionaire in which he repeatedly refused to answer questions to avoid...

A judge in California had to speed up the naturalization of a pregnant immigrant on Thursday when the woman, anxious to become a U.S. citizen because of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, started experiencing contractions. SNIP “I sped up this process because of the fact of the current president, because the immigration laws are under attack,” said Tatev, a former California high school history teacher, adding she was fearful her green card, which makes her a legal permanent U.S. resident, would be taken from her.
