Charles Pope “God Wants Me to Be Happy” - A Reflection on a Deeply Flawed Moral Stance One of the questionable, and unfortunately common, forms of moral reasoning today is the rather narcissistic notion that God wants each of us to be happy. Sometimes it is put in the form of a rhetorical question: God wants me to be happy, doesn’t He?And this sort of reasoning (if you want to call it that) is used to justify just about anything. Thus, in pondering divorce, a spouse might point to his...

... One thing the USWNT never leaves home without: its American flag, which is hung up in the locker room before every game. Ninety-nine years ago, Democrat Sen. John Walter Smith of Maryland provided $50 of his own -- not government -- money to help erect a cross in his home state. He was responding to a request from Mrs. Martin Redman, a mother who had lost her son in World War I. To honor him and the 48 other men from Prince George's County who had lost their lives in the war, she had joined the Prince George's Memorial Committee, whose goal was to erect a memorial not far from the Maryland border with the District of Columbia. In a thank-you note,...

The photos, which show AOC crying into her hands, were taken two days before she won her Congressional race. They show her outside a “tent city” in Tornillo, Texas which was being used to temporarily hold migrant children. Now Twitter users are dragging Ocasio-Cortez for wearing a $600 dollar watch during a protest. Eagle-eyed sleuths zoomed in on the watch and found out that it was a Mavado Museum Classic which retails at $595.

On June 21, New York Magazine published a shocking cover story, an excerpt from the new book by author and advice columnist E. Jean Carroll titled "What Do We Need Men For?" Carroll described suffering sexual assault in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room. The alleged assailant is named Donald Trump. When did this occur? She vaguely guesses it "has to be in the fall of 1995 or the spring of 1996" because of what they were wearing. In her telling, Carroll and Trump playfully talked about lingerie until he talked her into trying something on, and they walked back to...

When the U.S> launched cyberstrikes at Iran's missile control systems in response to an Iranian shoot down of a U.S. drone near the Gulf of Oman, it surprised pundits. The Gulf of Oman was already being compared to the Gulf of Tonkin. "From the U.S.S. Maine in Havana Harbor in 1898 to the U.S.S. Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1964, maritime incidents, shrouded in the fog of uncertainty,...

On the 26th of June AD 363, the last pagan Roman Emperor, Flavius Claudius Julianus, known to history as Julian the Apostate, perished from a wound he received while fighting off a Persian ambush. The pagan historian Ammianus Marcellinus—a witness to the event and an admirer of Julian—described the scene as follows: When we marched on from this place, the Persians, since their frequent losses made them dread regular battles with the infantry, laid ambuscades, and secretly attended us, from the high hills on both sides watching our companies as they marched, so that the soldiers, suspicious of this, all...

It’s a common thing on the Right to point to loony-leftism in churches and go, “Ha-ha, look at the crazy people!” But this calls up a more serious response, because it’s not just some fringe parish, but an Anglican cathedral:Rev. Bingo Allison? That would be the same ordained Anglican deacon who says here that he is a married father of three who aspires to ordination, and who recently celebrated this on his Tumblr, and who said there that Christian theology is “a fundmentally queer enterprise because it also challenges and deconstructs”:How is a Christian church that gives disturbed people like...
