WASHINGTON, Dec. 19 - As an example of the damage caused by unauthorized disclosures to reporters, President Bush said at his news conference on Monday that Osama bin Laden had been tipped by a leak that the United States was tracking his location through his telephone. After this information was published, Mr. Bush said, Mr. bin Laden stopped using the phone. The president was apparently referring to an article in The Washington Times in August 1998. (more at link) ----- The article drew little attention at the time in the United States. But last year, the Sept. 11 commission declared...

Like a lot of stand-up comedians, Lil Duval trades in crude, provocative humor that riffs on social issues. But was he joking when he told an immensely popular radio show over the weekend that he would kill a sexual partner if he found out she was a transgender woman? It sure didn’t seem that way. And now he and his interviewers are facing backlash from critics who say he encouraged violence against transgender women. On Friday, Lil Duval — aka Roland Powell, who grew up in Jacksonville and attended First Coast High School — sat down with the “Breakfast Club,”...

Join with fellow FREEPERS to pray for PRESIDENT TRUMP and VICE PRESIDENT PENCE and for AMERICA: Government, Family, Military, Business, Education, Churches, and the Media. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 1 JOHN 5:14 Religion Forum threads labeled [Prayer] are closed to debate of any kind. And what more can I say? Time is too short for me to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets, who by faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions,...

The New York contingent of plotters gathered in the Times building so they could use the company’s considerable communications resources to monitor the coup. In Washington, the plotters were spread out – the State Department, the FBI headquarters (the new Director was under arrest and his Obama holdout deputies were overseeing the arrest of key Republicans, conservative Supreme Court justices, and other appointed officials). The Pentagon was paralyzed – the plotters had enlisted enough officers to prevent an effective counter response. And, of course, the NSA had ensured that all comms out of the besieged White House were down. Elsewhere,...

Democratic governor candidate J.B. Pritzker Monday pledged if elected to lead Illinois as a resistance state to President Donald Trump's policies and said Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner's silence on federal issues demonstrated he was "complicit" with the president. "I'm proud to be part of the resistance," Pritzker told a group of supporters, using downtown's Trump Tower as a backdrop. "When I'm governor, we're not going to be silent like Bruce Rauner. Illinois will be a firewall against Donald Trump's destructive and bigoted agenda." On Monday, Pritzker unveiled plans such as expanded availability of health care and protections for gay rights...

The expansion was concentrated in mining, manufacturing, and utilities such as electricity, gas, and water supplies. Per capita income...

Reservations in the White House on troop levels in Afghanistan have reportedly led the Trump Administration to a point where it is considering withdrawing U.S. troops from the beleaguered country altogether, contrary to recommendations from the Pentagon. The Wall Street Journal reported that without managing to green light a plan to send 3,900 more troops to Afghanistan to turn back an advancing Taliban, the White House is instead considering scaling back U.S. presence there. One unnamed senior administration official was quoted as saying that the question of U.S. commitment in Afghanistan is a fundamental one for the White House. “It...

Ok guys and gals, it's late, and Mooch has been relieved of his ten day old job, to make way for general Kelly. I've got mixed feelings right now, because I saw the Mooch as a push back on all the darn leakers, both GOPe and deep state alike. So, there's a lot of smoke going around, and right now I don't know which Republicans we can trust to back President Trump. So I want everyone to think long and hard, and let's just try to tie leaks to people, so we can at least determine who has dirty hands...

Being a visionary billionaire and chief executive of three companies at once isn’t all fun and games, Elon Musk tweeted Sunday, describing “unrelenting stress” and suggesting he may be bipolar. Musk tweeted his replies to a number of questions on Twitter, starting with his response to a tweet that said he had “an amazing life.” “The reality is great highs, terrible lows and unrelenting stress,” Musk tweeted. “Don’t think people want to hear about the last two.” When someone else asked if he was bipolar, Musk replied “Yeah,” but then followed up with: “Maybe not medically tho. Dunno. Bad feelings...

29 years ago this fortnight, Pakistan's dictator -- the general who made jihad an integral part of Pakistani State policy -- died in a mysterious air crash. Did the KGB, the then USSR's dreaded espionage agency, assassinate Zia-ul Haq? Was India's RA&W responsible for blowing Zia's military aircraft out of the skies? Was it Zia's many enemies in Pakistan's military? Was it a case of exploding mangoes as Mohammad Hanif speculated in his fascinating novel about Zia's death? Or was the assassin someone else? Kallol Bhattacherjee delves into the persistent puzzle of Muhammad Zia-ul Haq's death. IMAGE: General Zia-ul Haq...

It wasn’t a bad week for the eurozone. Greece was able to borrow money from the bond market for the first time in two years, securing €3 billion ($3.5 billion). The International Monetary Fund increased its growth forecast for the eurozone as a whole, especially for southern European members, which were hard hit by the financial crisis. But despite the positive signals, the eurozone is hardly crisis-proof and much work remains to shore up the currency union. This was made clear by German Chancellor Angela Merkel two weeks ago, when she visited French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. “We will...

Life for British Phantom pilots was seldom boring. Whether it was training for near suicidal night attacks against the Soviet Navy, intercepting ‘Bear’s or performing low-level attacks. During the Cold War Chris Bolton flew the mighty F-4 for both the RAF and the Royal Navy. Hush-Kit met him to find out more. (Note: As some readers were super keen to read this now I have blatted it out warts and all. I will be correcting typos etc over the next few days) Hush-Kit: It seems the F-4 wasn’t particularly agile for its generation – is that fair? “It could roll...
