The University of Northern Colorado faced a strong and immediate backlash when it decided to suspend its Mexican-American studies program back in March. As the Greenley Tribune reported, the choice to drop the program was, according to administrators, based on low enrollment numbers, as this year only two students were going after a Mexican-American studies degree. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on Monday identified the deputies involved in the arrest and beating of an Apple Valley man that was caught on video in April. The deputies were attempting to serve a search warrant on April 9 when 30-year-old Francis Pusok fled on foot, and then on horseback. Helicopter footage from KNBC captured the end of the chase, showing Pusok fall off his horse before sheriff’s deputies used a Taser and beat him, appearing to both kick and punch him repeatedly.

The increase in violence that has followed the death of Freddie Gray continued through the weekend, with four homicides reported since Saturday, according to Baltimore police. Ten people were reported shot on Sunday alone, including three who were shot to death within a span of 39 minutes. The violence comes as the city prepares for the Preakness on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course. Ten people were also shot Thursday. At least 87 people have been killed in Baltimore this year, 22 more than at this time last year. Nonfatal shootings are up nearly 50 percent across the city.
