“The top six bank holding companies are considerably larger than before, and are still permitted to borrow excessively relative to the assets they hold,” the report states. “They are dangerously interconnected and remain vulnerable to sudden runs, because they borrow billions of dollars from wholesale lenders who can often demand their cash back each and every day.” It goes on: “Banks can still use taxpayer-backed insured deposits to engage in high-risk derivative transactions here and overseas. Compensation incentives fail to discourage mismanagement and illegality, given that when legal fees, settlements, and fines mount, it is usually the shareholders, not the...

The University of Northern Colorado faced a strong and immediate backlash when it decided to suspend its Mexican-American studies program back in March. As the Greenley Tribune reported, the choice to drop the program was, according to administrators, based on low enrollment numbers, as this year only two students were going after a Mexican-American studies degree. As a result of protests from students, alumni and community members, the University of Northern Colorado lifted the suspension on Friday. Nereida Sorrano, a UNC alumnus who graduated with a minor in Mexican-American Studies, spoke about how excited she was to hear of the...

What a shame: if only the economy had been better, the rioters would have had more name-brand stores to burn. Seriously, this had to be one of the strangest statements to come out of the Baltimore riots. On this evening's Ed Show, Baltimore Pastor Jamal Bryant complained that because of economic "disenfranchisement," the rioters "could only find one anchor store in that neighborhood" to destroy. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on Monday identified the deputies involved in the arrest and beating of an Apple Valley man that was caught on video in April. The deputies were attempting to serve a search warrant on April 9 when 30-year-old Francis Pusok fled on foot, and then on horseback. Helicopter footage from KNBC captured the end of the chase, showing Pusok fall off his horse before sheriff’s deputies used a Taser and beat him, appearing to both kick and punch him repeatedly.

State's Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby's decision last week to charge the officers has stoked strong opinions across the country ... Lt. When compared to the costs of the grid going down for an extended time, a few billion dollars is a bargain A report by the Center for Security Policy (CSP) paints a dire picture regarding the vulnerability of the U.S. (and by extension—Canadian) electricity grids from man-made or natural electromagnetic disturbances. The CSP and others in the national security sector have been beating this drum for a number of years, but unfortunately all too little is being done about the risks. William Forstchen even wrote a compelling must-read novel on this topic—One Second After—back in 2009. In 2004, the Commission...

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Marvin Banks' drug use and drinking had worsened in recent years and he was hearing voices in his head. His mother said she had hoped he would get help. He didn't, and now he is charged with capital murder in the deaths of two police officers in Mississippi. His girlfriend and brother are charged as accessories and a friend faces an obstruction charge. Banks' mother, Mary Smith, said when she saw the booking photos of her 26-year-old son, she knew something was off....

The increase in violence that has followed the death of Freddie Gray continued through the weekend, with four homicides reported since Saturday, according to Baltimore police. Ten people were reported shot on Sunday alone, including three who were shot to death within a span of 39 minutes. The violence comes as the city prepares for the Preakness on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course. Ten people were also shot Thursday. At least 87 people have been killed in Baltimore this year, 22 more than at this time last year. Nonfatal shootings are up nearly 50 percent across the city.

Sunday, May 10, 2015 It Takes a Good Guy with a Gun to Defend Freedom of Speech Posted by Daniel Greenfield @ the Sultan Knish blog When two terrorists in body armor and carrying assault rifles came for a roomful of cartoonists and fans of freedom of speech in Texas, the media took the side of the terrorists. CAIR, a Muslim Brotherhood front group with ties to terrorists, spun the attack by claiming that the contest had been intended to “bait” the terrorists. The media quickly picked up the “bait” meme. The New York Times, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the...

(Obama's not going away. Like Carter and the Clintons he'll be around to complete his convoluted chaos.) President Barack Obama recently vowed that his “project” will continue long after he leaves the White House. In a new email to supporters, the Obama Foundation has reiterated that the president is going to remain very politically active after 2016 with the declaration “eight years is only the beginning.” “Eight years is only the beginning. Barack Obama’s commitment to public service preceded his presidency, and will continue long after he and the first lady leave the White House. The foundation will carry forward...

A melody thumps through the speakers teetering unevenly with the bass, the sound is both old and new, a mix of the past and the present, like the participants in the dance, the traditional garments mixing with jeans and t-shirts until it is all a blur. Dillard University‘s 218 members of the Class of 2015 received a special treat in addition to their diplomas — Academy and Tony Award-winning actor Denzel Washington to deliver the keynote commencement address. And in contrast to the whiney, racial and excuse-driven address delivered by first lady Michelle Obama at another historically black university, Washington’s was filled of hope, humor, inspiration and love of his creator. “No. 1,” he resolutely told the graduates of the New Orleans university, “Put. God. First!”

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County police are investigating how a loud music complaint led to an officer-involved shooting in unincorporated Marietta. According to investigators, police were called to the Hill Crest Plaza Mobile Home Park on Atlanta Road on a noise complaint around 1:30 a.m. Monday When officers arrived, they asked Brian Ohlman, 37, to turn down his music. After refusing their orders, police say he pulled out a gun and began shooting at the officers. “The male refused to turn the music down and then produced a handgun and started firing at officers at which time the officers...

Luis Lopez used to be a big fan of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Lopez, who owns an auto repair shop, gave $100 to Garcetti's 2013 campaign for mayor. He spread the word about Garcetti on the Facebook page of the local Chamber of Commerce, where he serves as executive director. Now, as the mayor fires up his bid for reelection, that enthusiasm is gone. Lopez doesn't like Garcetti's minimum wage proposal, or the way it was unveiled. He described Garcetti staffers as largely unresponsive on the topic and says he won't vote for him in 2017. "The way he...

The far left will bring up their accusations that white men/and or jews are the cause of most of the worlds problems when they need to gin up a base as we get closer to election season. But what about "White Women", don't they share the same beliefs as "White Men"? White Women Marry White Men, so why can't the far left/liberals blame the women as well? Maybe it's a "Phony Scandal" to get the "Dumbfounded and Democrats" to vote Democrat in 2016 being all White Men are racists?

SPRING LAKE — Nature and mankind have never quite agreed on what to do about Wreck Pond, a 48-acre coastal lake near some of the Jersey shore's priciest oceanfront real estate. Storms sometimes open a channel between the pond and the ocean, but governments keep sealing it shut to protect nearby homes from flooding. The result has been poor water quality, and a much narrower access to the ocean that hurts fish that travel between the ocean and pond to breed

Behind the orchestrated riots that were allowed to strike Baltimore in recent weeks, and Ferguson, Missouri, before that, lies an agenda that has nothing to do with the fact that “Black Lives Matter.” As the Obama administration and more than a few race-mongers allied with the White House have already made clear, the real goal involves further chipping away at local self-government and community control over police departments — and expanding federal control over local law enforcement in its place. In between fanning the division and unrest with racialist rhetoric, Obama is also exploiting the chaos he is helping to...

VIENNA (Reuters) - Gay-themed traffic lights are getting Vienna into the mood for the annual Eurovision Song Contest, one of the world's most popular kitsch cultural events which this year is being hosted by the Austrian capital. Dozens of traffic lights in central Vienna have been programmed to show male or female gay couples with hearts -- in red for stop and green for go -- replacing the usual single, gender-neutral figure.

For decades, Gustavo Gutiérrez, a Peruvian theologian and Dominican priest, was treated with suspicion and even contempt by the Vatican’s hierarchy, which saw him as a dangerous Marxist firebrand who used faith as an instrument of revolution. Gutiérrez was the founder of a progressive movement within the Catholic church known as liberation theology, and while he was never censured in the manner that some of his philosophical compatriots were, there were often rumblings that Gutiérrez was being investigated by Pope John Paul II’s doctrinal czar, a German cardinal named Joseph Ratzinger who would later become Pope Benedict.
