The nation’s leading pediatric group issued new guidelines this week saying that kids with lice should be allowed to stay in school. Many school districts ban students with lice from the classroom until the child has been treated and all the bugs and knits (or eggs) have been removed. Now the American Academy of Pediatrics is encouraging schools to change their policies. The new guidelines read: "Head lice are not a health hazard or a sign of poor hygiene and, in contrast to body lice, are not responsible for the spread of any disease. No healthy child should be excluded...

Hillary Clinton doesn't play by the rules. That's not a partisan attack. It's not a talking point. It's not a fantasy. It's a fact—an agonizing truth to people like me who admire Clinton and her husband, who remember how Bill Clinton rose from a backwater governorship to the presidency on a simple promise: He would fight for people who "work hard and play by the rules." The evidence is overwhelming and metastasizing: To co-opt a William Safire line, Hillary Clinton is a congenital rule-breaker. "More than 180 Clinton Foundation donors lobbied her State Department." "That's not illegal," writes Vox reporter...

ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. – Meat dating to the year of President Obama’s first inauguration was served to students in some Hawkins County, Tennessee schools last week. Hawkins County Commissioner Michael Herrell was alerted after a cafeteria worker sent him a photo of the pork roast they used for school meals was from 2009. The 6-year-old meat had been frozen and then was thawed for meal preparation, according to WCYB. Herrell said the photo was taken at Joseph Rogers Primary School where the staff decided not to serve the meat. However, it was served at other schools.

  • Study: Global Warming to Push 1 in 13 Species to Extinction

Global warming will eventually push 1 out of every 13 species on Earth into extinction, a new study projects. It won't quite be as bad in North America, where only 1 in 20 species will be killed off because of climate change or Europe where the extinction rate is nearly as small. But in South America, that forecasted heat-caused extinction rate soars to 23 percent, the worst for any continent, according to a new study published Thursday in the journal Science. University of Connecticut ecologist Mark Urban compiled and analyzed 131 peer-reviewed studies on species that used various types of...

Climate change could drive to extinction as many as one in six animal and plant species, according to a new analysis. In a study published Thursday in the journal Science, Mark Urban, an ecologist at the University of Connecticut, also found that as the planet warms in the future, species will disappear at an accelerating rate. “We have the choice,” he said in an interview. “The world can decide where on that curve they want the future Earth to be.” If emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases continue to grow, climate researchers project the world could warm by...

In case you haven’t heard, Martin O’Malley is looking at challenging Hillary Clinton for the Democrats’ nomination next year. (And judging by the media coverage, you may not have heard unless your last name is O’Malley.) Another thing to be aware of when it comes to O’Malley is that he is a former governor of Maryland and mayor of Baltimore, so when the riots broke out this was clearly an appropriate place for him to show up and comment. Or at least somebody on his staff seemed to think so. But as it turned out, not all of the residents...

Immigration restrictionists often claim that there are no "jobs Americans won't do," if only US borders would be secured against economic migrants who are willing to work hard for low pay and few benefits. If the fruit-and-vegetable industry couldn't rely on seasonal farmhands from Mexico and Central America, for example, growers would perforce offer the higher wages necessary to attract American citizens to pick the country's fresh produce. What alternative would they have? Let crops rot in the field? Field workers pick strawberries in Oxnard, Calif. In reality, agriculture is no more of a zero-sum industry than any other, and...

The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) recently launched a webpage – “State Energy Costs for Families” –that highlights some of the challenges that millions of economically vulnerable Americans face as a result of rising energy costs. The project compiles data for 31 states from the Energy Information Administration (EIA). It’s important to note that energy prices affect families differently and are highly regressive in nature. More specifically, those with low and fixed incomes typically spend greater percentages of their take home pay on energy than those with higher incomes. Policymakers should be cognizant of this fact when evaluation...

Security researcher Seth Wahle of APA Wireless and Rod Soto of Hack Miami used a near-field communications (NFC) chip implant in his hand to demonstrate that it is possible to exploit Android devices and avoid detection by common body scanners located at airports and high-security environments. Wahle explained to Forbes that bought a chip designed to be injected into cattle and implanted the chip by an “unlicensed amateur” for $40 by using a needle which was larger than he had initially expected. --- [“But implants aren’t for the squeamish. Wahle says the needle was bigger than he’d expected when he had the chip implanted by an...

The H-1B program was bombarded with applications on April 1, 2015 and that's not a joke. On April 7, the USCIS announced the application cap had been reached, with approximately 233,000 applications for 85,000 slots. To determine which employers get H1B's they will hold a lottery. Realistically who cares? Foreign companies will just continue to fill their needs with B1 visas and exploit this program and American jobs will continue to be lost. Here's who cares, displaced American workers, Sen. Grassley, Sen. Sessions, and I care. Let me tell you who doesn't care if they cap H1B's or not -...

GOP presidential hopeful and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has called on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to return all donations made by foreign governments to the Clinton Foundation amid the growing scandal engulfing the Democratic candidate’s campaign following allegations made in a recent book. "The Clinton Foundation collected tens of millions of dollars from foreign governments including donors who had business interests with the State Department while Clinton was Secretary,” Cruz said in a statement released to the press on Friday. “She made decisions in that capacity that likely benefited the same people who were giving large donations to...
  • OpEd: Texas economy could freeze up if school opportunities for undocumented are limited

To borrow a quote from Game of Thrones, which recently had its season 5 premiere, “Winter is coming.” This is what can happen in Texas, our economy could start to freeze up, if we limit educational opportunities for undocumented students in Texas by passing Senate Bill 1819. It would end the dreams of thousands of Texas high school graduates, who have lived here since they were children, and rely on in-state tuition regardless of immigration status. The push to rescind 14 years of in-state tuition to these students, known as Dreamers, will greatly impact the Texas economy — a college...

In watching Baltimore burn, "progressives" run out of scapegoats. Over a week ago, a black man named Freddie Gray died after being arrested by police. Videotape shows Gray being dragged into a police van. Within a less than half an hour, his spine was somehow severed and he died seven days later. Did an officer or the officers intentionally or inadvertently cause the injury? Did the vehicle suddenly stop, causing a possibly untethered or poorly tethered suspect/passenger to break his neck? Why was Gray stopped in the first place? Given that he ran from the police, did this provide a...

The Foundation for Government Accountability has just published a report on state enrollments under the Obamacare Medicaid expansion. Here’s what the authors say about Michigan: When Republican Governor Rick Snyder lobbied the Michigan legislature to adopt his Obamacare Medicaid expansion plan, he too sold it on the promise of low and predictable enrollment. His office predicted no more than 477,000 able-bodied adults would ever sign up, with 323,000 signing up in the first year. But more able-bodied adults enrolled in ObamaCare expansion in the first three months than the state thought would sign up during the entire year. Despite the...

School calls the movie's cancellation a "teachable moment". Less than a week after former NFL star and University of Maryland alumnus Boomer Esiason threatened to cut off his support for the school over the cancelation of screenings of the film American Sniper on campus, the school confirmed a new screening of the movie has been scheduled. Boomer wasn’t the only one upset with the cancelation. University of Maryland’s president, Wallace Loh, talked about some of the backlash the school faced in a letter to students ... That cancellation drew controversy. “We were deluged by phone calls and messages from across...

Beginning March 31, 2018, all new vehicles sold in the European Union will be required to carry an emergency call system that automatically dispatches assistance to the scene of a crash. The "auto SOS" system, dubbed eCall, was approved by European Parliament yesterday after two years of debate over privacy concerns, reports BBC News. In the event of a crash, the device calls the E.U.'s 911 equivalent (112) and transmits to authorities important information including location, time, and number of passengers in the vehicle. An in-car button will also be installed in all vehicles. The eCall requirement will add an...
