Kentucky authorities indicted nine people Tuesday on charges of spiriting away what one prosecutor called more bourbon whiskey than a person could drink in a lifetime. Prosecutors say the scheme led by rogue distillery workers lasted for years and involved tens of thousands of dollars' worth of whiskey but began to unravel when whiskey barrels were discovered behind a shed.

Responding to people with mental health issues is the number one drain on police resources in Berkeley, a police officer who specializes in the topic said this week. Employers in 31 U.S. states cut jobs last month as weak economic growth weighed on hiring and a slowdown in oil and gas drilling caused big job losses in some states. The Labor Department said Tuesday that unemployment rates rose or were unchanged in 27 states and fell in 23 states. Eighteen states gained jobs, while employment was unchanged in Idaho.

Thousands of Wal-Mart employees are fighting to get their jobs back after Wal-Mart suddenly closed five stores last week without warning.  The retailer said it closed the stores in California, Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida due to persistent plumbing issues that could take as long as six months to fix. More than 2,200 workers were laid off as a result and given two months of severance pay.  But some critics are skeptical that Wal-Mart closed the stores because of plumbing issues.
