  • Iowa's Scherff Wins 2014 Outland Trophy

Iowa offensive tackle Brandon Scherff accepted the 69th Outland Trophy as the nation's best interior lineman during The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday night at the Disney Boardwalk. Scherff, a 6-5, 320-pound senior, became the fourth Hawkeye to win the Outland Trophy after Calvin Jones (1955), Alex Karras (1957) and Robert Gallery (2003). Only players from Nebraska (eight different ones, nine total) and Oklahoma (five) have won more Outland Trophies than Iowa, with Ohio State players also claiming four. Also in the audience at the Dance Hall were Auburn center Russ Dismukes and Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown, the...
  • Victoza

Doctor gave me a Victoza sample that lasts for a month. At the end of the month if he likes the results he'll give me a prescription. Having no med coverage the monthly costs is somewhere between 6 and 7 hundred a month. I see near a hundred sites that offer rx cards that make prescriptions near free. Can't believe any of them are for real. The Victoza site offers a card (actually a print out) that says brings the cost down to $25 a month. Took it to Walmart and they blew it off. Anybody taking Victoza and how...

Social media has no doubt who the most buzzworthy potential presidential candidates are at the moment for 2016: Hillary Clinton and Ted Cruz together accounted for 40 percent of the discussion on Facebook and nearly half — 47 percent — of mentions on Twitter among 10 top presidential possibilities in the past three months, according to new data provided to POLITICO by Facebook and Twitter.Meanwhile, Jeb Bush’s big name didn’t spark much chatter at all. He garnered only 3 percent of the Facebook mentions and 2 percent of tweets, fewer than nine other would-be contenders. The mentions cut both ways, including...

An outlandish example of political correctness occurred in Tennessee yesterday when a police officer allowed a car full of Saudi Arabians to drive away with a dead baby reportedly in the trunk so as not to be “disrespectful” towards Muslims. Police in Sumner and Robertson counties are on the lookout for a blue Dodge Charger after a traffic stop on Interstate 65 around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday. The vehicle, which had paper tags and a registration violation, contained three Saudi Arabians with Saudi drivers licenses who told the officer that they had a dead child in the trunk prepared for an...

State Attorney Shai Nitzan on Tuesday evening was said to support submitting an indictment against pro-Hamas Arab MK Hanin Zoabi (Balad), according to Channel 10. According to the report, the indictment will be on charges of threatening police officers, after Zoabi verbally abused two Arab Israeli police officers in Nazareth, and urged Arab youths to attack them. […] The indictment apparently will not be served for other notorious incidents, which include her defending the Hamas terrorists who abducted and murdered three Israeli teens on June 12, saying they weren’t “terrorists” and justifying their actions as a “legitimate” way to “fight...
  • Should Homeowners With Solar Panels Pay To Maintain Electrical Grid?

    NPR ^ | 11 Dec 2014 | Peter Overby
The costs of solar energy are plummeting, and now are about on par with the electricity generated at big power plants. This new reality intensifies a long-running business and regulatory battle, between the mainline electric utility companies and newer firms that provide solar systems for homeowners' rooftops. Sometimes the rivalry looks more like hardball politics than marketplace economics. The way rooftop solar typically works, the homeowner leases rooftop panels from a company that owns and installs them. It can be an expensive proposition, but the homeowner saves some money by drawing less power from the utility company's electric plants, and...

VATICAN CITY - Tackling the problem of climate change is a serious ethical and moral responsibility, Pope Francis told negotiators from around the world meeting for a climate summit in Lima, Peru. "The time to find global solutions is running out. We can find adequate solutions only if we act together and unanimously," he said in a written message to Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Peru's minister of the environment and host president of the 20th UN Climate Change Conference. Thousands of negotiators from 195 countries gathered for the meeting in Lima Dec. 1-12 to hammer out details of a new international agreement...

Jorge “Jinho” Ferreira feels the tension between being black and carrying a badge every day as a sheriff’s deputy in Alameda County, California. “I feel like you have to prove yourself on every level,” said Ferreira, 39, who patrols about 30 miles east of San Francisco. “You have to prove yourself to the black community, you have to prove yourself to all of your co-workers, you have to prove yourself to society.” With the nation roiled by two grand juries’ recent decisions not to indict white police officers in the deaths of unarmed black men, some black officers say that...

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Anxiety, depression, guilt, sleeplessness, marital strife, drug and alcohol abuse — two years after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the scope of the psychological damage to children, parents and others is becoming clear, and the need for treatment is likely to persist a long time. "Here it is two years later, and it's still hard to deal with. But, God, you didn't want to know me two years ago," said Beth Hegarty, a Sandy Hook mother who happened to be inside the school that day with her three daughters, all of whom survived.

I am reliably informed that Speaker Boehner is energetically working with the Obama White House to entice Democrats to come aboard the CRomnibus — and is deaf to conservative Republicans who are pushing for a very short term CR with a mechanism for denying funding for President Obama’s lawless unilateral amnesty for illegal aliens. We’ll see what happens, but the Speaker evidently thinks he can get over the goal line by teaming up with Dems.

The Land of Magical Thinking: Inside Putin’s Russia Snip... In Russia, “corrupt” is not an adjective. Corrupt is a noun, a proper noun, the word for the name and nature of the place. Corrupt crony capitalism is familiar everywhere. But in Russia the corruption is so pervasive that even the cronies have to pay bribes, not just to the higher-ups but to the lower-downs. Pomerantsev visits a TV studio owned by Kremlin-connected moguls. It’s in a shabby warehouse on the wrong side of town. There’s no sign or address on the metal door. Inside is a dirty little room with...
  • Tea party fumes over campaign finance plan - activists see power grab by GOP establishment

Tea party activists are attacking a campaign finance rider in the $1.1 trillion spending bill that they view as a sneaky power grab by establishment Republicans designed to undermine outside conservative groups. The provision would increase the amount of money a single donor could give to national party committees each year from $97,200 to as much as $777,600 by allowing them to set up different funds for certain expenses. The change would be a huge boost for party committees that have faced steep challenges in recent years from well-funded outside groups. Disgruntled activists fear the committees will unleash the added...

And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and the...

Not everyone has a name like “Jethro,” so it only makes sense that the guy who played Jethro Bodine on The Beverly Hillbillies would want to cash in on such a famous moniker. That’s why he’s ticked off right now at CBS, claiming the network breached a contract he had with it by allowing an Iowa restaurant chain to use the Jethro name and character. Actor Max Baer Jr. played Jethro on the show about a family of hill dwellers who struck it rich and moved out to Califor-ni-a, and snagged a deal with CBS in 1991 allowing him to...

The only ethical response to betrayal by one's own leader is to find a new leader. There have been famous betrayals, but for America one stands out. Benedict Arnold was a general in the American Revolution. Thousands of officers and enlisted followed him, obeyed him, attended to his every word. That was prior to September 21, 1780 and his plot with the British to turn over the critically strategic ground of West Point to the British in exchange for money and position. After his betrayal of his country, it would have been a strange thing indeed to have found his...
