Millions of people could qualify for federal subsidies that will pay the entire monthly cost of some health care plans being offered in the online marketplaces set up under President Obama’s health care law, a surprising figure that has not garnered much attention, in part because the zero-premium plans come with serious trade-offs. Supporters of the Affordable Care Act say that the availability of free-premium plans — as well as inexpensive policies that cover more — shows that it is achieving its goal of making health insurance widely available. A large number of those who qualify have incomes that fall...

BOSTON (CBS) – An easy method of family planning, with no big surgery or pills to remember, is becoming a concern for a growing number of women. They say Essure, tiny coils implanted in the fallopian tubes, are causing horrific side effects. “Basically every single day it felt like my ovaries were getting stabbed,” said Jessica LaVallie of Palmer. Kendra Kilroy of Quincy said she had severe pains that were debilitating, and Marie Larsen of Holliston said she suffered with back pain, hip pain, and memory loss. Melanie Goshgarian of Burlington now believes she suffers from an allergy to nickel...

The U.S. government has just passed a new law called: "The affordable boat act" declaring that every citizen MUST purchase a new boat by April 2014. These "affordable" boats will cost an average of $54,000 - $155,000 each. This does not include taxes, trailers, towing fees, licensing and registration fees, fuel, docking and storage fees, maintenance or repair costs. This law has been passed because, until now, typically only wealthy and financially responsible people have been able to purchase boats. This new law ensures that every American can now have a "affordable" boat of their own, because everyone is "entitled"...

When the Netherlands’ newly coronated king made his first annual appearance before parliament, he turned some heads when he addressed the deficiencies of the Dutch welfare state. “Due to social developments such as globalisation and an ageing population, our labour market and public services are no longer suited to the demands of the times”, the king said in a speech written by Liberal prime minister Mark Ruttes cabinet. “The classical welfare state is slowly but surely evolving into a ‘participation society’”, Willem-Alexander continued. By this he meant that the public systems should start encouraging self-reliance over government dependency. It is...

Never heard of Poyais? That's because you weren't living in Great Britain in the early 1820s, when newspaper advertisements, promotional brochures and the ubiquitous street singers broadcast the country's limitless opportunities to potential investors. There was a snake in the garden, though, writes David Sinclair in "The Land That Never Was," a striking and colorful history of Poyais. The glitch: Poyais was a fiction, the brainchild-turned-hell-spawn of Gregor MacGregor -- fantasist, confidence trickster, dandy and bon vivant with a taste for titles and palms itching for lucre. Mostly, MacGregor sat on his hands. When roused, he made tactical and logistical...

President Obama’s Halloween Message White House, October 31, 2013 Good morning. From my family to yours on this festive fall holiday let me wish all Americans a happy Halloween. While my girls are getting older and we may not be going door to door, it is good for all of us to pause and celebrate the American tradition of giving and receiving. Nearly 500 years ago, the people of Scotland set aside this evening as All-Hallows-Even, that is, the night before All Hallows Day. Since then, the ancestors of Americans have looked for inspiration in the giving and receiving of...

I had great cancer doctors and health insurance. My plan was cancelled. Now I worry how long I'll live. Everyone now is clamoring about Affordable Care Act winners and losers. I am one of the losers. My grievance is not political; all my energies are directed to enjoying life and staying alive, and I have no time for politics. For almost seven years I have fought and survived stage-4 gallbladder cancer, with a five-year survival rate of less than 2% after diagnosis. I am a determined fighter and extremely lucky. But this luck may have just run out: My affordable, lifesaving...

O bamacare has a new message to seniors: Take two aspirins and find yourself a new doctor in the morning. Just ask 84-year-old Dorothy Gaillard, a retired book binder and a patient of my father, primary care physician, for more than two decades. Gaillard could easily find a doctor near her Queens home, but she dutifully makes a 45-minute schlep to my father’s office for uniquely personal care. He takes her blood pressure himself and even schedules her next appointment, tasks that most doctors shunt off to assistants. Last Saturday, Gaillard called my father, aghast about a letter she had...

October was not a good month for Justice Marc Nadon, the newest appointee to the Supreme Court of Canada. He never did take his seat on the court. But November, if anything, has started off on a worse note. He was told to stay away from his office at the Supreme Court building on Ottawa’s Wellington Street, not to go to the court building and not to talk to any of his prospective new colleagues on the court. And the Supreme Court has very publicly posted those directions to Justice Nadon on its website. Justice Nadon was appointed from the...

He has never been afraid to put his reputation on the line by indulging in controversial antics. But many will be thinking Kanye West has gone too far after he brashly ignored critics and wore a jacket with a Confederate Flag patch in Los Angeles on Saturday. The Georgia born singer was spotted in the garment after he worked up a sweat in a private boxing lesson.

ROGERS COUNTY, Oklahoma - Rogers County Sheriff's Department arrested three people in what appears to be an accidental shooting. One of the men told deputies he'd shot his friend while the two were on a Sasquatch hunting expedition. The two men were hunting - apparently for Bigfoot - around 177th East Avenue and Tiger Switch Road Saturday night. Omar Pineda reportedly heard a "barking noise," jerked and shot his friend in the back, authorities say. "When you start off with an explanation like that, do you believe anything after that?" Sheriff Walton said Sunday morning. The men met emergency responders...

Amidror says Israel must remove Iran's existential threat by diplomacy if possible, but if not, then by "other means." Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei put a wrinkle in his country’s “charm offensive” on Sunday, saying Israel was an “illegitimate and bastard regime.” His comments, posted on his Twitter account, came just a few days before a second round of talks in Geneva between his nuclear negotiators and the P5+1, made up of the US, Russia, China, Germany, France and Britain. Even before Khamenei’s tweet, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, speaking at the opening of the weekly cabinet meeting, said, Iran...

In 9-plus years of blogging, never have I seen a story this telling of a Republican Party that doesn't understand its base, or New Media. Worse, it's indicative of a corrupt inside-the-Beltway party that has abandoned or decided to ignore nearly everything I believe in as an American and a conservative. This is a disaster for several reasons; I'll try to briefly and clearly explain my thinking below. GLOVES OFF: GOP ESTABLISHMENT GOES AFTER TEA PARTY The National Republican Senate Committee, the GOP campaign arm responsible for Senate elections, has decided to use its political power to block consulting firm Jamestown Associates from receiving...

World famous English ethologist, evolutionary biologist and unrelenting critic of religion and the religious, Richard Dawkins, has turned his anger on airport security rules after he had a jar of honey confiscated. Dawkins, who is no stranger to Twitter controversy following alleged anti-Muslim comments he made back in August, declared on the micro-blogging site that “Bin Laden has won, in airports of the world every day” after security took away his jar of honey. …
