VATICAN CITY — Claims of eavesdropping on the Vatican are nothing new. But it’s hard to imagine any current foreign snooping could match the spying frenzy of the Cold War when the communist “East” and democratic “West” were locked in an ideological battle. After Polish Cardinal Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope John Paul II in 1978, the Vatican did come under increased scrutiny as it was seen to be a decisive player in the anti-communist chess game. Apparently double agent priests infiltrated the upper echelons of the Vatican and Czechoslovakian spies reportedly bugged the private studio of then-Vatican Secretary of...

Founders of religious communities, prominent lay Catholics, philanthropists and church leaders are among the many Catholics whose final resting places are located within the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Many know that Archbishop John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop in the United States, is entombed beside other bishops in the crypt at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore. The Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland is the final resting place for spiritual shepherds including Cardinal Lawrence Shehan and Archbishop William D. Borders. There are also lesser-known Catholics who have made an...

America, we've got some bad news: Our Constitution isn't going to make it. It's had 224 years of commendable, often glorious service, but there's a time for everything, and the government shutdown and permanent-crisis governance signal that it's time to think about moving on. "No society can make a perpetual constitution," Thomas Jefferson wrote to James Madison in 1789, the year ours took effect. "The earth belongs always to the living generation and not to the dead.… Every constitution, then, and every law, naturally expires at the end of 19 years." By that calculation, we're more than two centuries behind...

A juror in the George Zimmerman trial claims the case ruined her life and says she's had death threats made against her children, lost friends, her job and will soon lose her home as a result of it. The juror, a 36-year-old mother of eight who only identified herself as Maddy during an interview on Inside Edition Thursday, was the only juror who showed her face when she appeared on Good Morning America in July. Since then, Maddy says, she's lost her job as an aide at a nursing home and she and her husband have had to sell most...

Nearly 2 million New Yorkers who rely on food stamps will have less to spend at the supermarket starting Friday — and it may only be the beginning. The average family of four on food stamps is expected to lose $36 each month, according to the Department of Agriculture, because funding added to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program in 2009 under the federal stimulus program ran out Thursday.

There are few experiences more painful than losing a child. Learning your child was murdered and the authorities refuse to do anything about it makes the pain incalculably greater. In July 2005 the Johnson family of Missouri experienced the start of this nightmare and they have not been able to come close to getting out of it ever since. According to the website MILITARYCORRUPTION.COM, on July 18, 2005 Army PFC Lavena Johnson “committed suicide.” In doing so PFC Johnson who was stationed in Iraq at the time, shot herself in the head smashed in her own front teeth and poured...

Back in December, I wrote about the absurdity of the EPA claim that coal-fired power plants produced significant mercury which necessitated drastic reductions at any cost. I was then puzzled that the EPA did not produce maps of the mercury concentrations that would show the mercury was found in higher concentrations downwind of coal-fired power plants. It turns out that maps of the concentrations of mercury do exist and can be examined. The National Atmospheric Deposition Program produces annual maps of the mercury concentrations across the USA here. Note that the mercury high concentration areas changed somewhat between 2009 and...

What an odious piece of garbage. Today's Politico, in an article by Todd Purdum, accuses Republicans of "calculated sabotage" of Obamacare, comparing their opposition to the "pattern of 'massive resistance' not seen since the Southern states’ defiance of the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954." Purdum himself seems to recognize just how loony he comes off, writing "[t]hat may sound like a left-wing conspiracy theory . . . But there is a strong factual basis for such a charge." Sabotage, really? People who understand democracy would call it entirely legitimate opposition to a philosophy and a...

As a teenager, I used to day dream about escaping the oppressive communist society where we lived. I did not have a passport and a snowball chance in hell of getting one, I did not have any money, and our travel was restricted to a 20- mile radius, as far as our feet could carry us, as far as the rickety government-run buses would transport us, and as far as our pocketbooks allowed. We were so poor though, the wind whistled through our pockets most of the time. I hid in Grandpa’s tall corn fields or in the woods by...

The President has made many faulty promises over the last few years. Often times, they were proved to be outright lies, such as, “If you like your healthcare, you can keep it under my plan.” Well, Mr. Obama has done it again. Concerning his signature legislation, the Affordable Care Act, President Obama projected that, by March 1, 2014, about 7,000,000 people would enroll through healthcare.gov. To reach the Administration’s low-end estimate of seven million enrollees by March, 39,000 people have to join ObamaCare per day. The number that actually enrolled? Six. That’s right, a mere six (6) people were newly...

Well, we had a Halloween party this year after all. And while it was scary, as always, the whole affair was fairly low-key compared to past ghoulish celebrations around here: And then there was this “secret” after party in 2009 with Johnny Depp and the entire Alice in Wonderland cast: Lady M was festively attired in pumpkin and gray this year, as was Big Guy: My! 2009 v. 2013; we are getting gray, aren’t we? What’s causing that? Anyway, now I know why Chef Yosses was in the garden with Lady M the other day: Ooooh! That’s scary! Chef...

A World gone Crazy. 2 Chronicles 22:10 But when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah. 11 But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king's sons that were slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of Ahaziah,) hid him from Athaliah, so that she slew him not. 12 And he...

Moscow, November 1, Interfax - Victims of political persecutions suffered for faith were commemorated at the Butovo firing range, the Moscow Patriarchate reports at its official website. Names well-known today (of about thousand people) killed in Butovo in the years of Great Purge were declared near the funeral ditches for several hours. The NKVD "shooting list" was voiced in compliance with the days when verdicts were carried out, photos of the killed people were shown at a special display. Rector of the Novospassky Monastery and other clerics read out the first names, then parishioners continued the reading. Several dozens of...

At first glance my favorite part was definitely the floppy disk. But upon a closer look, I think it's the oversized hammer and screwdriver sitting next to the old, boxy computer.

- FrontPage Magazine - http://frontpagemag.com - ObamaCare: Illegal Voter Mine for the Democratic Party?Posted By Arnold Ahlert On November 1, 2013 @ 12:45 am In Daily Mailer,FrontPage | 1 Comment While many Americans remain focused on the ominous implications of ObamaCare with regard to health insurance or the faulty website, a far more serious issue remains under the radar. On Wednesday, two national election watchdog groups alleged that ObamaCare is really a massive voter registration vehicle masquerading as a healthcare bill. Gregg Phillips, the founder of the election integrity group Voters Trust takes it one step further. “I think [it] is the biggest voter...

New Yorker Mag Cover Slams Obama and Sebelius By Noel Sheppard Created 11/01/2013 - 11:10am Don't look now, but even New Yorker magazine is piling on the disaster that is ObamaCare. Take a gander at the cover for the issue to hit newstands Monday: For our younger readers that might not get all of the jokes here, the computer appears to be one of the first available to the public in the '70s. The technician on the left is trying to insert a floppy disc which probably ceased being used about ten years ago or so. The hammer and screw...

- FrontPage Magazine - http://frontpagemag.com - The 93 Million ObamaCare LiesPosted By Matthew Vadum On November 1, 2013 @ 12:56 am In Daily Mailer,FrontPage | 4 Comments The Obama administration has known for three years that when the employer mandate is enforced in 2015 up to 93 million Americans will be forced out of their employer-sponsored health insurance plans. This means President Obama has not only been lying to Americans for at least three years, reassuring them that they would be able to keep their current healthcare plans, but that a massive chunk of the nation’s insured will be hurt by...

A tech firm linked to a campaign-donor crony of President Obama not only got the job to help build the federal health-insurance Web site — but also is getting paid to fix it. Anthony Welters, a top campaign bundler for Obama and frequent White House guest, is the executive vice president of UnitedHealth Group, which owns the software company now at the center of the ObamaCare Web-site fiasco. UnitedHealth Group subsidiary Quality Software Services Inc. (QSSI), which built the data hub for the ObamaCare system, has been named the new general contractor in charge of repairing the glitch-plagued HealthCare.gov. Welters...
