Many of us join Secretary Gates in condemning the Associated Press for its heartless and selfish decision to turn its back on the wishes of a grieving family in order to exploit the tragic death of a true American hero. Lance Corporal Joshua 'Bernie' Bernard was a selfless young American who sacrificed everything for our freedom. Shame on the AP for purposely adding to the grieving family's pain. Ignoring the family's wishes by publishing a sacred image of their loved one proved a despicable and heartless act by the AP. The family said they didn't want the photo published. AP,...

In the year ending March 31, there were 127 so-called use-of-force incidents at border crossings. That's almost three times the number for each of the previous two years... Canadian border guards have been carrying guns since late July 2007. The federal government announced plans to arm members of the Canada Border Services Agency in 2006, and in that year's budget Ottawa allocated $101 million over two years to pay for weapons training. At the time, it was estimated that the process to arm Canada's 4,800 border guards was expected to take 10 years and cost about $1 billion.

It's Labor Day, but there's nothing to celebrate. On July 24 this year, the government raised the minimum wage to $7.25, which is another way of saying that unemployment is mandatory for anyone who is otherwise willing to work for less. You have no freedom to negotiate or lower the price for your service. You are either already valuable at this rate or you are out of the game. Here is how it works. I've never been good at shaping pizza dough by hand, throwing it up in the air the way those guys do, so it would certainly cost...

Here's your chance to find out who has been visiting the White HouseHere's your chance to help figure out who has been visiting the people's house during the early months of the Obama administration. Although President Barack Obama has announced that he will make public the names of visitors to the White House, there's a catch. Under the new White House policy, names of visitors during the first eight months of the administration will be released only if the requests include specific names to be checked against the visitor logs. In other words, if you don't know who visited, or...

Former US president Jimmy Carter said Sunday Palestinian leaders were "seriously considering" a one-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, following a visit to the Middle East. "A majority of the Palestinian leaders with whom we met are seriously considering acceptance of one state, between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea," Carter wrote in an op-ed piece in The Washington Post. "By renouncing the dream of an independent Palestine, they would become fellow citizens with their Jewish neighbors and then demand equal rights within a democracy," he explained. "In this non-violent civil rights struggle, their examples would be Mahatma Gandhi,...

The US Federal Reserve's policy of printing money to buy Treasury debt threatens to set off a serious decline of the dollar and compel China to redesign its foreign reserve policy, according to a top member of the Communist hierarchy. BY AMBROSE EVANS-PRITCHARD Cernobbio, Italy. Cheng Siwei, former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee and now head of China's green energy drive, said Beijing was dismayed by the Fed's recourse to "credit easing". "We hope there will be a change in monetary policy as soon as they have positive growth again," he said at the Ambrosetti Workshop, a policy gathering on...

Birmingham’s top Muslim leader urged his followers to “vent their feelings” against anti-Islamic protesters during a weekend rally that ended in violence and dozens of arrests, The Times can reveal. Muslims were encouraged by the Birmingham Central Mosque to counter-demonstrate during Saturday’s protest in the city, which was organised by the right-wing English Defence League (EDL). It is understood that Muslims were encouraged to confront the protest against the advice given by the West Midlands Police to community leaders to stop their followers from attending.

Mentally retarded suspect was coerced into confession, defense saysAfter serving 26 years in prison, it appears that Anthony Caravella did not rape and murder a 58-year-old woman in 1983. A recent DNA test determined that the 41-year-old mentally retarded man with an IQ of 67 did not ejaculate his sperm into the victim. So now Broward prosecutors are planning to ask a judge to release him under some form of supervision, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Defense attorneys were not surprised by the findings, claiming the then-15-year-old boy was coerced into a confession. In fact, he gave five...

Barack Obama is committing the same mistakes made by policymakers during the Great Depression, according to a new study endorsed by Nobel laureate James Buchanan. By Edmund Conway Published: 06 Sep 2009 History repeating itself? President Obama has been accused by some economists of making the same mistakes policymakers in the US made in the Great Depression, which followed the Wall Street crash of 1929. His policies even have the potential to consign the US to a similar fate as Argentina, which suffered a painful and humiliating slide from first to Third World status last century, the paper says. There...

Now that White House "Green Jobs Czar" Van Jones has resigned, what's next? Inevitably, the American mainstream media - ABC, NBC, CBS, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, et al - must be held to account for sitting on the sidelines as this major story kept building without them, went viral on YouTube, and then became so large that a key appointee of President Obama was forced to step down. But with their decision to ignore the Jones story, they may have actually done Mr. Obama far more harm than good: Who vetted this guy? How did...

"...but wonder if the original astroturfers from the great “Town Hall Smackdown ‘09" might have been useful in bringing out the honest members of the political fringe. Other speakers claimed that this was a grass roots movement, representing a large part of society, posing a real threat to Obama and the Democratic Party. I’m sorry, but when PAC’s like the National Tax-Limitation Committee joins forces with other far-right groups, I am less inclined to believe it’s truly a grass roots effort..."

The officer, who was returning to his station nearby, had already seen that someone was on fire at the gas station. The officer and the attendant attempted to put out the fire, she said. In Cincinnati tomorrow, President Obama will announce that he's appointing Ron Bloom his Senior Counselor for Manufacturing Policy, White House sources tell ABC News. He will remain in that position even while he takes on his new task. A key part of the team that advised the White House on the struggling U.S. auto industry, Bloom and team pushed U.S. automakers General Motors and Chrysler to come up with viable...

Soon the anniversary of 9/11 will be upon us. We live in a real world inhabited by some evil, violent people, not a theoretical world inhabited by academics and paper-shufflers. Those who insist that we obey the Marquess of Queensbury rules, while our enemies obey no rules at all, may have good intentions. But in fact, they are doing their best to doom our civilization to destruction, and our people to terrible suffering. Still, if you believe it was “criminal” to “torture” suspected terrorists with sleep deprivation, emotional stress, or − in only three cases − waterboarding, you might consider...
