After spiking above the 50 mark two weeks ago, an index of investor sentiment has dropped sharply in what analysts say is among the signals currently forecasting a turn in the U.S. stock market. "Signals are flashing that currencies, commodities and equities are all about to turn. There are too many signals across too many assets to ignore," said T.J. Marta, drawing attention to the American Association of Individual Investors survey's surge above 50 two weeks and subsequent fallback.

A Phoenix-area pastor has started to draw protesters to his congregation after he delivered a sermon titled, "Why I Hate Barack Obama," and told his parishioners that he prays for President Obama's death. Pastor Steven Anderson stood by his sermon in an interview with MyFOXPhoenix, which reports that the pastor continues to encourage his parishioners to join him in praying for the president's death. "I hope that God strikes Barack Obama with brain cancer so he can die like Ted Kennedy and I hope it happens today," he told MyFOXPhoenix on Sunday. He called his message "spiritual warfare" and said...

That, I think, is a better takeaway than the “threat” meme resulting from Harry Reid’s bon mot with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which has been highly critical of the Senate Majority Leader. Reid went out of his way to be rude to an advertising manager at the LVRJ during a luncheon, then tried clumsily to claw backwards a bit later. Nevertheless, the LVRJ took Reid to task for his attack: On Wednesday, before he addressed a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Reid joined the chamber’s board members for a meet-’n'-greet and a photo. One of the last in line...

The first extraordinary form in a Montgomery, Alabama, parish in forty years will take place September 27, 2009, at 5pm, St. Peter's Catholic Church. It will be a Missa Cantata, featuring all Gregorian propers plus W. Byrd's Mass for Three Voices, a sung by members of the St. Cecilia Schola in Auburn. The Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Mark Fischer of the St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Atlanta, Georgia. It would be fantastic to see the Church with standing room only, along with a generous collection for the visiting priest and the parish, and I see no...

August 30, 2009 — Our airways are lined with cells that have beating oars called motile cilia. Like galley slaves on a Roman ship, they beat in coordinated waves, setting up currents that propel dust and foreign matter out toward the mouth. Scientists just found out another amazing capability of these motile cilia...

PROVO, Utah -- It isn't very hard to imagine what the subscribers of the Rochester (N.Y.) Gem thought about Mormons a month after The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized. You can almost picture them gathering around while someone read aloud the May 15, 1830, edition story titled "Imposition and Blasphemy!! -- Money-diggers, &c." "Some months ago a noise was made among the credulous of the earth," the article began, "respecting a wonderful production said to have been found as follows. An ignoramus near Palmyra, Wayne county, pretended he had found some 'Gold Plates,' as he is...

Another new low for Obama: Overall, 46% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance. That’s the lowest level of total approval yet measured for Obama. Fifty-three percent (53%) now disapprove. Eighty-one percent (81%) of Democrats approve while 83% of Republicans disapprove. As for those not affiliated with either major party, 66% disapprove. This is including one day after the canonization of Kennedy....no push upward from that embarrassing spectacle. Patterico: A savvy friend thinks 2010 will be a repeat of 1994. It’s obviously too early to say that, but these numbers can’t be encouraging for the...

From ciNews: Secular songs to be banned at cathedral ceremonies. Songs that are not religious in nature will no longer be allowed at ceremonies in St. Aidan’s Cathedral in Enniscorthy. The cathedral’s authorities, who are concerned at an increase in the use of such songs, in particular during wedding and funeral liturgies, have told parishioners that pop music and folk songs will no longer permitted. The authorities feel that although pop or folk songs involved may well be beautiful, they do not respect the sacred character of the liturgy. Curate Fr. Richard Lawless said he and his colleagues were very...

Milpitas (CA) - Solid state disk (SSD) drives are likely to see further speed increases from the currently fastest drives that provide read speeds of about 200 MB/s to the theoretical maximum of 300 MB/s. Former U.S. Rep. William Jefferson and his wife, Andrea, have filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection as the convicted ex-congressman prepares for a forfeiture hearing in his federal corruption case. William Jefferson was convicted earlier this month in Virginia on 11 of 16 corruption charges. He faces a forfeiture hearing because the jury found that he and his family received $470,000 and more than 30 million shares of stock proceeds as a result of criminal activities. Meanwhile, he and his wife are seeking protection from a handful of creditors. They owe more than $1 million and less than $10 million,...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The Prius hybrid automobile is popular for its fuel efficiency, but its electric motor and battery guzzle rare earth metals, a little-known class of elements found in a wide range of gadgets and consumer goods. That makes Toyota's market-leading gasoline-electric hybrid car and other similar vehicles vulnerable to a supply crunch predicted by experts as China, the world's dominant rare earths producer, limits exports while global demand swells. Worldwide demand for rare earths, covering 15 entries on the periodic table of elements, is expected to exceed supply by some 40,000 tonnes annually in several years unless...

An embattled Roman Catholic bishop in northeastern Pennsylvania announced Monday that he is stepping down for health reasons, saying he suffers from insomnia and crippling physical fatigue. Scranton Bishop Joseph Martino, 63, had been leading the Diocese of Scranton since 2003 and will be leaving more than a decade before the usual retirement age of 75. "As the song says, you have to know when to hold them and when to fold them," Martino said at a news conference. "And I think it's time to move on." Martino had been heavily criticized by parishioners who felt his imperious leadership style...

Morale has sagged at the CIA following the release of additional portions of an inspector general's review of the agency's interrogation program and the announcement that the Justice Department would investigate possible abuses by interrogators, according to former intelligence officials, especially those associated with the program. A. B. "Buzzy" Krongard, the third-ranking CIA official at the time of the use of harsh interrogation practices, said that although vigorous oversight is crucial, the public airing of once-classified internal assessments and the prospect of further investigation are damaging the agency. "Morale at the agency is down to minus 50," he said. At...
