From ciNews:
Secular songs to be banned at cathedral ceremonies. Songs that are not religious in nature will no longer be allowed at ceremonies in St. Aidans Cathedral in Enniscorthy.
The cathedrals authorities, who are concerned at an increase in the use of such songs, in particular during wedding and funeral liturgies, have told parishioners that pop music and folk songs will no longer permitted. The authorities feel that although pop or folk songs involved may well be beautiful, they do not respect the sacred character of the liturgy.
Curate Fr. Richard Lawless said he and his colleagues were very mindful in particular that newly-bereaved people were going through a difficult time and would be diplomatic and not dogmatic in dealing with requests for the use of various songs. He said the priest involved would explain why a church was, or was not, an appropriate setting for certain music.

I guess that means no more dancing in the aisles to Forever, huh?
Not really news. The Catholic Church has long required that music being used in Church for such occasions be liturgical in nature. (I remember one of my grandmother’s friends had passed on, and her family got into a big fight with the Church because in her will she had requested Nat King Cole’s “Ramblin’ Rose” be played at her funeral. The Church said “nyet” to that idea).
I walked down the aisle to Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring, the Ave Maria was sung beautifully during the service, and my mother insisted on the Hallelujah Chorus on my way back down the aisle (she had waited for me to marry until I was 29 and a half, so I figured she was entitled).
I expect the ACLU to file a lawsuit any second.
Wow, that's simply unforgettable.
LOL.
One of the most touching tributes I ever saw was at a WW2 veteran friend’s funeral. He was an artilleryman in France, and as pallbearers carried his casket out of the church, the piano player played a sort of two-finger version of “The Caisson Song”. I don’t recall what hymns were played earlier, but I will never forget that old artillery salute.
He will not permit anyone who is dressed inappropiately to present the gifts. The same applies to those who do the readings, take the offerings or are extraordinary ministers.
More than once I have seen him tell people that they can not participate.
It only takes once for people to get the message.
I don’t regret it. Actually, it was a beautiful, traditional wedding. Heads were covered (I did push the envelope by having bridesmaids dresses that were sleeveless, but they were in all other ways very modest and none were low cut to be sure). Vicar General O’Donnell was my mentor and guide through conversion, and he always remembered me when we would meet throughout the years. He was a fine and good man of God. My world is a little more lonely now that he’s gone, but wherever he is, he’s rooting for me. ;-)
We have a notice in our bulletin every week about wearing perfume might bother someone, but nothing about inappropriate dress, sad isn’t it?
That is so funny!
Actually he has the AC on so high, most folks bring a sweater to Mass.
Here in the Pacific Northweat our sanctuary doesn’t have air-conditioning. It was pretty rough one week during Eucharistic Adoration when it was above 90 degrees but I figured Our Lord had suffered more than weather for us.
Yes, as I recall, the rest of the family and friends in attendance thought so, especially when she started dancing a jig and mouthing the words “Hallelujah! She’s married, she’s married.” ;-) True story.
My wife and I had Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring when she entered at our wedding. We were told the same. We had “The Rejoicing” from Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks at our exit. We had a musician on trumpet as well, which is wonderful!
It sounds magnificent. If I could have had the Bach Society in attendance, I would surely have done so. As it was, it was just the organ with the Hallelujah Chorus. As you may have read just above, my mother did all the parts, plus the choreography. ;-)
That’s one solution, LOL. We use swamp coolers and it never gets cool much less cold.
