Stocks erased an early morning rebound to turn lower in recent trading, as market veterans saw little to sustain the early burst of buying. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which slid nearly 300 points in the previous session, was recently down 27 points. General Electric fell 8% to under $7 as investors worried that the conglomerate could lose its AAA credit rating. Home Depot dropped 5%. The S&P 500 slipped under the 700 mark, falling 0.9% to about 694 as its financial sector slid 3%. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.5%.

Coldest winter in UK for 13 years The UK had its coldest winter for 13 years, bucking a recent trend of mild temperatures, the Met Office has said. A new Field Poll shows that California voters are dissatisfied (55 percent) with the state budget passed by the Legislature last month. Those likely to vote in the May 19 budget special election are even more unhappy (65 percent). The plan contains a broad swath of tax hikes and deep spending cuts.
