NEW ORLEANS -- Thinking of putting all your money in a sock because you're afraid the Year 2000 bug will wipe out your bank account? Think again. Most of it won't be insured. The federal government insures bank accounts up to $100,000. But most homeowners' policies cover only $200 cash. At least one person (was it you Jethro?) already has lost his savings because he was afraid of the Y2K bug, cleared out his bank account, and was almost immediately robbed. "Our concern is that people would be looking for homeowners' coverage if they got robbed," said Donald E. Beery, ...

(UPI Focus) Terrorist cell members arrested WASHINGTON, Dec. 13 (UPI) - Members of a suspected terrorist cell have been arrested in an unidentified Middle Eastern country, accused of planning attacks against Americans, U.S. officials said Monday night. An administration official, who asked not to be identified, said the investigation is still ongoing, and further details would compromise operations. But the official said the alleged attack was intended to coincide with New Year's celebrations overseas and prompted a State Department warning to Americans overseas during the holiday season. Though the official and others would not say how many people had ...

Antifederalist No. 50 ON CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTIONS (PART 2) It is true that the Continental Convention have directed their proposed constitution to be laid before a Convention of Delegates to be chosen in each state "for their assent and ratification," which seems to preclude the idea of any power in the several Conventions of proposing any alterations; or, indeed, even of rejecting the plan proposed if they should disapprove of it. Still, however, the question recurs, what authority the late Convention had to bind the people of the United States to any particular form of government, or to forbid them ...

Antifederalist No. 49 ON CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTIONS (PART 1) That the new constitution cannot make a union of states, but only of individuals, and purposes the beginning of one new society, one new government in all matters, is evident from these considerations, viz: It marks no line of distinction between separate state matters, and what would of right come under the control of the powers ordained in a union of states. To say that no line could be drawn, is giving me the argument. For what can be more absurd than to say, that states are united where a general ...

Gun Owners of America E-Mail/FAX Alert 8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151 Phone: 703-321-8585 / FAX: 703-321-8408 http://www.gunowners.org Illinois Emergency Action Alert December 13, 1999 It may not be too late to stop anti-gun Governor Ryan and Chicago's nightmare, Mayor Daley, from destroying your rights. Late last week, the Governor called for a special session of the General Assembly to begin this afternoon. The sole purpose? GUN CONTROL. You see, the courts decided on Dec. 2nd that the gun control package previously passed by the Legislature was unconstitutional, so these anti-gun zealots feel they must immediately get it ...

Antifederalist No. 48 NO SEPARATION OF DEPARTMENTS RESULTS IN NO RESPONSIBILITY In the new constitution for the future government of the thirteen United States of America, the President and Senate have all the executive and two thirds of the Legislative power. This is a material deviation from those principles of the English constitution, for which they fought with us; and in all good governments it should be a fundamental maxim, that, to give a proper balance to the political system, the different branches of the legislature should be unconnected, and the legislative and executive powers should be separate. By ...

Dick Morris was on O'Reilly tonight, and he claims that the republican primaries are already fixed, and that George W. Bush has it locked up. His reasoning is that the top four states (California, New York, Texas and Illinois - I think)vote the primaries through their party leader. All are in support of Bush - this represents about 20% of the total Republican votes. 40% is required. The rest of the states vote representatively, which means that the people vote their candidate. When asked by O'Reilly why McCain and the others haven't raised hell, Morris responded that they probably don't ...

The Oily Tracks Running Through Kosovo Michael Savage November 30, 1999 Kosovo was about oil and nothing but oil, with maybe some uranium thrown in and a dash of "wag-the-dog." And you thought it was to save the poor Kosovar Albanians. Of all the ethnically "cleansed" peoples around the world, some numbering in the millions, the beneficent powers of NATO decided to draw the line with the Kosovar Albanians. About 2,000 of the ethnic Albanians had been reportedly killed by Serbs in the last several years, so it was time for the humanitarian guard to take action. No matter that ...

Antifederalist No. 47 "BALANCE" OF DEPARTMENTS NOT ACHIEVED UNDER NEW CONSTITUTION I am fearful that the principles of government inculcated in Mr. Adams' treatise, and enforced in the numerous essays and paragraphs in the newspapers, have misled some well designing members of the late Convention. But it will appear in the sequel, that the construction of the proposed plan of government is infinitely more extravagant. I have been anxiously expecting that some enlightened patriot would, ere this, have taken up the pen to expose the futility, and counteract the baneful tendency of such principles. Mr. Adams' sine qua non ...

WASHINGTON, Dec 12 (AFP) - A newly discovered letter links Vice President Al Gore to an immigration consultant accused of making illegal contributions to the Democratic National Committee, Newsweek reports in its edition out Monday. Gore made an appearance at a Buddhist temple in 1996, a visit arranged by immigration consultant Maria Hsia, who stands trial next month for allegedly making illegal contributions to the DNC. She denies these charges. The DNC is the party's main administrative body. According to the weekly, four months after Gore's visit to the temple Hsia approached him at another fundraiser to help get the ...

Folk heroes are an extraordinary lot: larger than life, sometimes mystical, but always with clear connections to the common people who spawned them; thus, always growing from the very roots of the culture, from the hearts of the people, and, in the case of New Jersey State Troopers James Kenna and John Hogan, from the foundations of the American dream. These two troopers were once ambitious youths with family backgrounds, dreams, and hopes similar to millions of other Americans. They wanted to devote their lives to public service, in the field of criminal justice. These two troopers were ordinary, ...

In a speech delivered last week in Montreal to the World Civil Society Conference, Kofi Annan, the UN's secretary-general, said he wants to bring the United Nations "closer to the people" by embracing the "NGO revolution." According to Mr. Annan, this is "the new global people-power, or whatever else you wish to call this explosion of citizens' concern at the global level." And the "international civil society" constituted by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) is "the best thing that has happened to [the UN] in a long time." The term "civil society," like the "Third Way" and "soft power," is a slippery ...

Mike Rosen Socialists seduce gullible to survive Why do socialists persist? That question was put to me recently by someone expecting a profound answer. You might as well ask why mosquitoes persist. It's what they do. Socialists are driven by a combination of ideological fervor and animus towards capitalists. It's a philosophy based on envy and resentment, dressed up as "social justice." Once upon a time, socialist doctrine called for government ownership of the means of production. As we move into the 21st century, the rhetoric of socialism has become more sly and euphemistic. As long as government controls ...

Carter Goes to Panama for Handover By Eloy O. Aguilar, Associated Press Writer, Monday, Dec. 13, 1999; 4:32 p.m. EST PANAMA CITY, Panama –– Former President Jimmy Carter, who 22 years ago committed the United States to withdraw from Panama and hand over the Panama Canal, is returning to this country to witness the fulfillment of that pledge. While conservatives in the United States question the wisdom of the handover, Carter will join President Mireya Moscoso, other heads of state and King Juan Carlos of Spain in a ceremony Tuesday marking the transfer. It will be the end of a ...
