At the end of this century, the Republicans have shown themselves to be a humorous lot. Programmed for decades to support the best conservatives had to offer, all too many have failed to notice that the best conservatives are no longer being offered. Why is that? And why is it that so few have noticed? Perhaps my definition of conservative needs to be explained. For despite what Websters may say, I see conservatism as an adherance, even a fanatical adherance to the Constitution of the United States. The Bill of Rights is our protection from the forms of government ...

McCain could win big in New Hampshire, he says WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain may be headed for a landslide in the nation's first primary that could endanger the Republican nomination hopes of Gov. George W. Bush, pollster John Zogby said Friday. "I'm beginning to think we may be looking at a possible scenario where Bush may not be the nominee of the party - money and history notwithstanding," Mr. Zogby said, citing a post-debate survey he took in New Hampshire. He thus became the first major analyst to question the conventional assumption that Mr. Bush will be the GOP ...

Odd portrait painted of bomb-plot suspect BY BRANDON BAILEY Mercury News Staff Writer Kevin Patterson, the man suspected of plotting to blow up a Sacramento area propane plant, lived in a world where right-wing militia members talk about overthrowing the government and survivalists boast of storing several months' supplies against the threat of Y2K chaos. The 42-year-old handyman told friends he used pre-paid phone cards so no one could trace his calls, while avoiding supermarket discount clubs because ``they put your name in a satanic data base.'' And over the past year, he and an associate carried on cryptic ...

The Florida Chapter of Free Republic sprung into action once again in Orlando. We had intended to demonstrate directly in front of the Wyndam Hotel and Resort, where the Florida Democrat Party Convention was assembled. Clinton stayed there overnight, doing God knows what... Gore was slated to arrive for a speech at 2:00 p.m. We arrived across the street from the entrance to "Hotel Row," and proceeded to a Disney shopping village close to the Wyndam. As we started to walk over to the Wyndam, we were greeted by the head of Disney Security, a gentleman named Tom. Tom told ...

Newsstands lose as out-of-towners find it easier to go online By Fred Bayles, USA TODAY CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- For more than four decades, Fred Cohen's family has run a Harvard Square institution for people interested in someplace else. Boston-area intelligentsia would come to Out of Town News for copies of The Times of London, Pravda, the Jerusalem Post and newspapers from other distant spots. Students and tourists came in search of hometown news; locals would check other cities' job and real estate classifieds in hopes of a new start. Out of Town was a reliable window on the rest of the ...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The stock market just keeps on climbing and Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has been making a massive amount money available in the financial system. Is it irrational exuberance or Y2K paranoia? Or Both? Greenspan has permitted the biggest expansion of money supply in the Fed's history in the weeks leading up to the end of the year, when the so-called Y2K computer bug could disrupt financial systems. The Fed's move has been explosive on Wall Street because a free flowing money faucet at the Fed boosts confidence in the financial system, and the economy at ...

BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. - On a blustery day, a man slowly emerges from his farmhouse, the soft white stubble on his moon-shaped face gently pelted by an autumn rain. Once outside, his gait accelerates, and quite purposefully. "Gonna make a comeback," Muhammad Ali offers to me in a whisper. I've heard this pronouncement before. It is vintage Ali, a typical shock-o-gram he wants dispatched to the world to create some commotion. I've always suspected he does this so we won't forget. But how could we? He motions to me to follow him to a half-million-dollar custom-made boxing gym on his ...

The trivial pursuit of the presidency By Wesley Pruden THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published 12/10/99 Shed a tear for poor George W. Bush. The man can’t get anything right. First it was his fund raising. Every morning when he went out to get the paper, he had to rake 20-dollar bills off his lawn. Perfect strangers were driving by at all hours of the night to throw money at the house. From all the commotion this caused, you might have thought the neighbors were complaining about the greenback litter. His phenomenal success in collecting money to run for president was ...
