The London Telegraph | 12/11/99 | David Rennie
Russia and China unite against new world orderUH-OH THE presidents of Russia and China declared yesterday that human rights should never overrule national sovereignty, denouncing the rise of a new world order based on Western values. At the end of a two-day informal summit in Beijing, Boris Yeltsin and Jiang Zemin issued a joint statement condemning the growing trend of using "pretexts such as human rights and humanitarian intervention to destroy the sovereignty of independent states". China repeated its support for Russia's military campaign in Chechnya, which world leaders including President Clinton have criticised for its brutality. In return, ...

The Financial Times | 12/11/99 | Richard Wolffe
Snickers overshadow Bush campaign Widespread debate over his brainpower marks the end of a honeymoon with the US media, writes Richard Wolffe For Mr Bush's advisers in foreign policy, the IQ question is merely a case of misinterpretation. "It is not just a matter of telling him what he needs to know to get him through a debate," said one senior adviser. "He is trying to get his hands and heart and mind around the issue of how to lead. I am struck at how often he's grappling at translating what the experts are saying in terms of what the ...

Aren’t you going to suffer great post-partum depression after you leave office?".... Simpson to Clinton while inside Arkansas tomato factory: "I have to bask in this moment, for a moment, because I am here talking to the most powerful man on the planet, who was a poor boy from Arkansas..." Are you willing to do that?" -- ABC's Sam Donaldson to House Majority Whip Tom DeLay on the proposed 1.4 percent across-the-board non-entitlement spending reduction, October 24 This Week. 2. "If there was any doubt that by virtue of his position, Clinton occupied as lofty a plane as the Pope on Tuesday — or that the Pope, by virtue of being human, had some of the same needs ...

T.R. Reid, The Washington Post: "You know, I think they are. The tone, actually, is very harsh: You call this leadership? The Senate vote was irresponsible. It was disgraceful. It was dangerous. But you know, at some level, I think they actually loved this....they love this in the British media because it portrays Americans as kind of, ...

ABC political analyst George Stephanopoulos: "Very classic mode, especially in New York. Chuck Schumer, who won the Senate race last time, really had to come out as a centrist, not a traditional liberal Democrat." -- October 18. (Schumer's American Conservative Union in 1996: 5. I’m talking about the House managers. All of whom are born-again, all of whom are right-to-lifers, all of whom are you know, anti-immigration, pro-English Only, etc, etc, don’t you think that when that face is presented, isn’t that one of the reasons the majority, the vast majority of the American people support the President? I Am Woman Award (for Hillary Rodham Worshipping) 1. "She emerged on health care, only to beat a very bruised retreat. She clearly hated being thought of as just Bill Clinton’s wife. But ironically, it would take his scandals, finally, to free her. Finally, last November 1998, Hillary Clinton showed the world what she could do on the campaign trail without him. Political mastery, every bit as dazzling as his, the thoughtful speech, unapologetically strong, emboldening Democrats, electing Senators. So her friends say she has really earned this campaign, this moment, if she chooses, earned it by changing herself, searching, ...

China Syndrome Award (for Dismissing Nuclear Espionage) 1. "I’m suspicious of the Republicans here. I think they’re trying to make some political hay. It feels like ‘Who lost China?’ and a lot of witch hunts of the past where they see a chance to make some political capital by us not being tough enough. I don’t think that’s true." -- Evan Thomas, Newsweek’s Assistant Managing Editor, March 13 Inside Washington. 2. Dec. 10 update -- In light of the Housing and Urban Development's threatened "massive lawsuit" against gun manufacturers, Rep. Bob Barr (R-GA) has asked Government Reform Chairman John Mica to investigate HUD's statement last summer that they "do not plan to bring any action on its own against the gun industry." Legal Counsel Gail Laster also said "HUD has no authority on its own to bring litigation." Barr said Laster's statement amounts to "misleading, if not lying" to Congress. HUD is telling reporters that the statement to Congress just said they didn't intend to sue the industry; that they ...

Doris Kearns Goodwin Award (for Campaigning to Revive the Camelot Myth) 1. "We Americans, even those among us who have never liked the Kennedys’ politics, have long been fascinated by the Kennedy mystique. Or as some call it, the Kennedy myth. The dictionary defines mystique as ‘an aura of heightened meaning surrounding something to which special power or mystery is given.’ A myth is ‘a traditional story dealing with ancestors or heroes,’ a story that ‘shapes the world view of a people or delineates the customs or ideals of a society.’ By those definitions, like it or not, there is ...

Perhaps it will take one more school shooting to move us from people who support gun control to people who vote it. But as we continue to let the widows and the wounded do the work, be warned. Shooting the Constitution Award (for Advocating the Banning of Guns) 1. "Repealing the Second Amendment is no cause for the faint-hearted, but it remains the only way for liberals to trigger an honest debate on the future of our bullet-plagued society. So what if anti-gun advocates have to devote the next 15 or 20 years to the struggle? The cause is worth the political pain. Failing to take bold action condemns all of us to spend our lives cringing in terror every time we hear a car backfire." -- USA Today columnist Walter Shapiro, September 17. 2. "Get rid of ...

NEW YORK (AP) - Bryant Gumbel's new "Early Show" is no early hit: The staff is in turmoil, ratings are down and CBS is still waiting for a return on its big investment in morning television. Four staff members were fired this week after senior executive producer Steve Friedman said they were not up to duking it out with NBC's "Today" show and ABC's "Good Morning America." CBS spent more than $30 million this year to build a new studio across from Central Park and lured Gumbel back to morning TV, hoping to become more competitive in one of the ...

I think the biggest reason was the three principals involved in it — Clinton and Monica and Vernon Jordan — are pros, they know how to cover-up so there was never any, they didn’t have to do any explicit ‘now young lady, you have to lie.’ Monica’s a savvy gal. She knows how to lie when the time is right. Clinton’s been doing it all his life. And Vernon is a terrific lawyer who ...
