Bosnia is terrorist safe haven, says presidency chairman BANJA LUKA, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Dec 8 (AFP) - Bosnia-Herzegovina has become a safe haven for international terrorists and is handing out passports to the extremists, the Croat chairman of Bosnia's presidency said in an interview Wednesday. "The fact that terrorists of the worst reputation in the world have Bosnian passports unambiguously shows that there was an uncontrolled granting of these passports," Ante Jelavic told the weekly Nezavisne novine. Jelavic did not say how many suspected terrorists were granted Bosnian passports and citizenship but suggested the government should review the validity of the ...

The homeless are making a comeback in the public mind, just in time for Hillary Rodham Clinton's prospective run for a New York Senate seat. The major media forgot about the homeless after Bill Clinton's election because they were only useful in bashing Republican presidents Bush and Reagan for their "heartless" and "uncaring" policies. In the aftermath of an attack on a woman by a man thought to be homeless, New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani ordered police to get the homeless off the streets and put them in shelters, even if they did not want to go. Giuliani ...

WASHINGTON -- Life at the top is becoming increasingly lonely for President Clinton. First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton announced this week she will move to their Chappaqua, N.Y., home after the Christmas holidays to focus on her Senate campaign. Vice President Al Gore, once a regular lunch companion, has vowed to spend most of his time outside of Washington as his own presidential bid heats up. Almost all of the inner circle of friends and advisers that surrounded Clinton at the beginning of his presidency have left, died or quit amid legal difficulties. The normally extroverted chief executive even ...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - Three elderly people died and at least five others were injured in a fire at a Nashville retirement home, fire officials said on Thursday. The blaze broke out on Wednesday night in a second-floor apartment at the Sycamore Terrace retirement home. Firefighters were already at the complex on an emergency medical call when the fire was discovered. The fire was extinguished quickly but filled the three-story apartment building with thick black smoke, according to media reports, which said the three deaths were apparently caused by smoke inhalation. Nashville Fire Chief Buck Dozier told CBS Radio: ``What ...

Dec. 9 — Who does the New York Times favor in the heated Senate race between Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani? Right now, neither one. Philip Boffey, an editorial page editor for the influential paper, gave a talk at Harvard this week, and when a student asked who the paper was inclined to endorse, says a source, Boffey replied: neither. “HE SAID that both candidates think that the Times is against him,” says a source. “He said that the Times is no fan of Rudy, but has been so hard on Bill and Hillary that the Clintons are convinced that ...

Senator Orrin Hatch, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has steadfastly refused to call for the resignation of Attorney General Janet Reno, claiming that he doesn't like to "ruin people's careers" and "the decision should be made by the President." In a recent Republican Party Presidential debate in Arizona, Senator Hatch also staunchly defended the Reno Justice Department's decision and case to break up Microsoft. Senator Hatch's ...

NEW YORK- Continuing with his Big Fat Idiot series, Al Frankin announced today that he has signed a new book deal with Lez Publications. Tentatively titled ROSIE O'DONNELL IS A BIG FAT IDIOT, this new effort departs from Franklin's previous work. "In stead of attacking a conservative, I have decided to take on one of my own, like-minded liberals," Franklin said in a phone interview today. "I mean, what makes some people think that because they have a t.v. show, act in the movies and are a liberal, that they can spout off any old kooky idea that pops into ...

Chinese influence on Panama Canal as surrender date nears is overblown The Chinese will get you if you don't watch out. At least, that is what some critics of this country's Panama Canal treaty allege. If the United States does not renege on this decades-old treaty, they say, the Chinese firm of Hutchison-Whampoa - a supposed front for the Chinese government - will be in control of the strategically vital canal and may even start sneaking missiles into Panama. This is preposterous notion, reminiscent of fears expressed when the treaty squeezed through the Senate by just one vote in 1977, is ...

SAGINAW, Mich.--Running in third place among the Republican presidential candidates, publisher Steve Forbes is hoping for a "breakthrough" in two key early contests that will establish him as the leading conservative alternative to front-runner George W. Bush. Forbes said he needs a strong second-place finish in the Jan. 24 Iowa caucuses and then a respectable third place--behind Texas Gov. Bush and Sen. John McCain of Arizona--a week later in the New Hampshire primary. That should shake things up, says Forbes--forcing other conservatives to drop out of the race and ending the popular notion that Bush's nomination is inevitable. "Why ...

Alan Keyes should leave the Republican Party and become Pat Buchanan's VP running mate. There message would resonate across the country. Also, it is sad to see Rush Limbaugh tie his reputation to a weak and too inexperienced candidate such as George W. Bush. Rush appears to have lost his objectivity and may be under the impression that George W. is the only way for the Republicans to win. George W. has the establishment governors and other mainstream Republicans prematurely signed up for support. However, in my opinion, George W. will be a weaker candidate that Bob Dole with the ...

Yeltsin blasts Clinton for Grozny rebuke BEIJING, Dec. 9 — President Boris Yeltsin, visiting China, warned the United States on Thursday against trying to put pressure on nuclear-armed Russia over its military campaign in Chechnya. Yeltsin, known for frequent outbursts, said that President Bill Clinton, in his rebuke of the Kremlin’s offensive on Wednesday, “must have forgotten for a moment what Russia is. It has a full arsenal of nuclear weapons.”

The Clinton administration's threat to bring a class-action lawsuit against gun makers might be largely bluster. But even if it is, Tuesday's announcement, along with suits already filed by 29 cities and counties, reflects the real frustration of public officials and ordinary Americans over gun violence--the unending school shootings, workplace massacres and domestic quarrels that turn lethal. Gun makers, then, would be wise to enact on their own the modest, obvious steps that public officials seek, actions intended to reduce accidental shootings and illegal sales.      Tuesday's announcement, from the White House and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, said ...

1) Y2K Virus Discovered ------------------------------------------------------------ Sherman Fridman, Newsbytes It's unclear whether the biblical nomenclature was intended to invoke images of Armageddon, but a new and unique type of virus, called "W95.Babylonia" has just been detected according to the Symantec Antivirus Research Center (SARC). In an interview with Newsbytes, Vincent Weafer, director of SARC, said that that this virus is very complex, that infected computers would be very difficult to fix, and that it is unique in its method of operation. According to Weafer, the virus, which was first reported to Symantec Monday, was planted in various Internet newsgroups and spread ...

Some described it as the world's first Nintendo war. Our fighter jets were pounding targets on computer screens with such abandon that it looked like a Space Invaders game being played at the nearby convenience store. This wasn't a march into Iraq with the chilling prospect that a desperate Saddam Hussein would unleash a chemical assault on our troops. This was virtual reality, where the good guys won so effortlessly that it prompted a new wave of national pride. Saddam Hussein was the perfect villain. His invasion of Kuwait was an outrageous act of aggression. And we defeated him ...

For reasons largely out of its control, the U.S. military is struggling to retain seasoned personnel. Even more serious, however, is the increasingly difficult time the services have had in recruiting men and women. America will be unable to protect its interests, prevent the slaughter of innocent civilians, and work around the globe to promote democracy if the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps fail to attract the quality and quantity of individuals needed to meet today's challenges. News from the recruiting front paints an ominous picture. Last September, in an effort to fill 7,000 empty slots, Army ...

The Republican race for president grew more competitive Wednesday as a new poll showed major slippage for George W. Bush in New Hampshire after his less-than-commanding performance in two debates. While the Texas governor remains a heavy favorite for the GOP nomination, his poor debate reviews--even from some supporters--suggest he faces a far tougher fight than was expected just a week ago. Underscoring the reality, the new poll in New Hampshire showed Sen. John McCain of Arizona surging past Bush to his biggest lead ever, 37% to 30%, in a shift of 10 percentage points from a survey in ...

Leave it to the clinton administration to have a guy like me marveling at how generally antagonistic the United States has been these past few years and how right our country's greatest enemies have been in their outrage toward us, and in their new defensive posture, toward us lately. First we antagonize Russia by attacking Yugoslavia for unfounded reasons. Then we antagonize China by intentionally bombing their embassy in Yugoslavia. Now we fish a six year old Cuban boy out of the sea, floating near the body of his drowned mother, and rather than send the boy home to ...
