As the opinion makers wring their hands about the onslaught facing the youths of today, shooting each other willy-nilly in the school yard, their target enemy is clearly identified. Those damnable guns! How the hairdo's cluck and fuss, before the klieg lights go out and they return to their gated communities or condos, all no doubt patrolled by surrogates with guns the elites refuse to soil their own hands with. Oh, how they care for the kids, wanting to take away their parents' guns, to make them safe. Oh, if only the kids knew how much they cared. And yet ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. John McCain, whose presidential campaign rails against special-interest influence, raised $10,000 from AT&T executives soon after introducing legislation that would make it easier for the phone giant to expand further into the cable television business. McCain's bill would take away the Federal Communications Commission's power to approve telecommunications mergers, eliminating one of the two regulatory hurdles facing such industry deals. He introduced the legislation less than three weeks after FCC Chairman Bill Kennard said in May that AT&T's proposed takeover of cable company MediaOne ``warrants very careful scrutiny.'' Both McCain's spokeswoman and AT&T said Tuesday ...

The Los Angeles Police Commission, lead by the nose by a pair of 12 year olds, has recommended passage of a ban on the sale of ammunition and ammo components to civilians. Your help is needed to convince the City Council that such major policy decisions are an adult matter. They need to hear the opinions of adults, not the chatter of children. The San Fernando Valley NRA Members' Council is active in the fight against this stupid law. This law will do nothing but drive law abiding dealers out of business. Yes, it is true that we can count ...

Relief pantries feel crush, despite jobs The economy is strong, but food requests are up as much as 25 percent. Some blame welfare reform or confusion on food stamps. From the tiniest food pantries in middle-class suburbia to large regional sorting agencies, emergency food cupboards are overwhelmed this year. The rise in requests for food - anything from government cheese to the fixings for holiday meals - happens at a time when unemployment is at a record low of 4.2 percent for the nine-county region. But observers say that welfare reform - and misconceptions about food-stamp eligibility - could ...

The Justice Department inspector general reaffirmed Tuesday that a federal inmate committed suicide in an Oklahoma cell in 1995, but recommended discipline for four federal officers who allegedly lied during investigations of the death. Although rejecting allegations of a coverup, the inspector general criticized the Bureau of Prisons' response, the FBI's investigation and the FBI's handling of evidence in the death of Kenneth M. Trentadue on Aug. 21, 1995 in the Federal Transfer Center at the Oklahoma City airport. Trentadue was found hanging in his cell, but his brother, Jesse, believes he was murdered by guards who tried to make ...

Phil Valentine's Address To The Tennessee Senate Finance Committee November 16, 1999 http://members.home.net/philvalentine/senateaddress.htm Members of the Senate Finance Committee: Thank you for the opportunity to address you this morning. Some of you may see me as the bane of your existence after several weeks of non-stop telephone calls, faxes and e-mails. The Governor and some in the General Assembly have laid the blame for the outrage of the proposed income tax at the feet of talk radio. I wish I could wield such influence but I have merely served as a conduit through which the desires and frustrations of the ...

Grab the tissues--truly heartwarming! A great story - Something to remember this holiday season. Angels, Once in a While In September 1960, I woke up one morning with six hungry babies and just 75 cents in my pocket. Their father was gone. The boys ranged from three months to seven years; their sister was two. Their Dad had never been much more than a presence they feared. Whenever they heard his tires crunch on the gravel driveway they would scramble to hide under their beds. He did manage to leave $5 dollars a week to buy groceries. Now that ...

The following copyrighted article is available exclusively on the Roth IRA Web Site: I am surprised to note that in all of the dialog about the Roth IRA at the Roth IRA Web Site, and elsewhere on the internet and in print, writers are totally ignoring the most important issue: the United States Government's promise to maintain the tax-free status of withdrawals from Roth IRAs. For many of us, the withdrawals from IRA and Keogh programs are decades away; in my case, roughly aligned with the well-known forecast of the Social Security crisis around the year 2010. In the political ...
