Richard Danzig, the man Bill Clinton appointed to preside over the dismantling of the Navy as we've known it for 223 years, seems to think sex is the only sizzle that sells. Duty, honor, country is for old (white) coots. "Semper Fidelis" is for the birds. Reforming attitudes and eliminating obstacles in the way of making combat safe for Moms is No. 1 on Mr. Danzig's agenda as secretary of the Navy. He wants to assign women to assuage the loneliness of the long-distance submariner. And when he suggested the other day that the nuclear-submarine fleet should prepare to ...

The independent counsel law died with a whimper this week, even as current Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr permitted Clinton crony Web Hubbell off with a plea-bargain that included no promise of future cooperation -- meaning the Hubbell end of the cover-up is intact. Few are left to weep at the demise of this Watergate-era law that tried with mostly perverse results to finesse the conflict-of-interest problem that can arise when serious allegations of wrongdoing are presented to a U.S. Attorney General concerning the person with the power to hire and fire the attorney general. Most critics, however, missed the ...

Iran's Interior Minister Abdolvahed Moussavi lari said here today that the Islamic Republic cannot stand foreign intervention in the Caspian Sea and its regime. The Iranian Minister who was speaking to reporters after his talks with the Chairman of the State Duma Genady Seleznev said here that Washington is trying to ruin relations between Iran and the Russian Federation with the idea of imposing its own preferences on the region frequently also subscribing to opposite criteria in doing so. He said the arrest of a group of 13 Iranians on charges of espionage is simply Iran's internal matter. He commented ...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 2, 1999 EASING OF RULES ON HIGH-TECH COMPUTERS TO COMMUNIST CHINA SHOWS BI-PARTISAN WASHINGTON "DONOR CLUB" CLINTON REPUBLICRATS CARE MORE FOR BIG DONORS THAN NATIONAL SECURITY (Washington, July 2) Judicial Watch, the non-partisan government watchdog, said today that news from the Clinton Administration that it would allow China greater access to more sophisticated American computers and other technology further shows that America's national security plays second fiddle to the concerns of foreign and domestic donors. "To allow China access to the best of America's computer technology is downright dangerous. Judicial Watch has come to expect this ...

Buchanan Offers To Lend Bush Money WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nevermind that George W. Bush raised a record $36.25 million for his presidential campaign during the first half of the year. Republican rival Pat Buchanan is offering to lend the front-runner money. Bush declined to compete in a New Hampshire straw poll this weekend that charges participants $25 each. ``We are uncomfortable with the idea of our New Hampshire supporters having to spend their hard-earned money to show their support of Governor Bush,'' Sen. Judd Gregg wrote to the poll organizers on behalf of the campaign. ``We understand the governor's problem,'' ...

9.00 p.m. The Irish and British governments have made a declaration in Belfast which is hoped will provide the basis for an agreement, and will lead to the setting up of the Northern Executive. Under the deal decommissioning would follow days after the setting up of the Executive. Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Mr Blair said: "We believe both unionist and nationalist opinion will ...

More disturbing to the Gore 2000 campaign than the vice president's failure to break the $20 million fundraising level he'd guaranteed, is that internal campaign polls show Democrat Bill Bradley dead even with Gore among Democrats in California and New York. "We're floored. The money news was bad. (Bradley has $12 million reported to Gore's $18 million)," says a campaign fundraiser. "The polling news is even worse. If we don't do something dramatic in the next couple of weeks, I know Clinton is going to come along, whine to the New York Times about the campaign and really screw us." ...

This excerpt was taken from section three entitled 'Thursday, July 2nd, 1863: The Second Day' (Gettysburg) Longstreet sat along. And there was happy-eyed Fremantle, dirty and cheery on a ragged horse. He seemed never to change his clothes. "General, are things about to commence?" "They are indeed." Longstreet grinned. "I suggest you find a convenient tree." "I will, oh, I will indeed." He turned, pulling the horse away, then turned back. "Oh , sir, best of luck." "Charming." Longstreet said. Barksdale's Brigade, Mississippians, was passing him, moving into line. He watched them place all extra baggage all blankets, all kitbags, ...

LONG WRITEUP: Judge Peter Rogers of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas today rejected an appeal to overturn Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham's decision not to prosecute Teamster boss Johnny Morris for his role in the violence of October 2nd. The petitioner was Don Adams, who received the worst beating at the hands of the Teamsters for the crime of protesting against President Clinton. Here's how that went down. The day got off to a confusing start, as it wasn't clear in what courtroom the decision would be rendered. Don said on the Rollye James Show last night that it ...

More proof that gun control doesn't work. Since the passage of the first major piece of gun legislation - other than the 2nd amendment - the crime rate has gone up. The call to arms at every news report of a killing is to pass more gun control. There are an estimated 20,000 gun laws according to the NRA and still murders and robberies occur. The answer has been to pass more laws. I wonder if the policy and lawmakers are seeing a trend? No wonder how many restrictions the government places on access, use, and availability of firearms they ...

Getting DIRT on the Bad Guys To former detective Frank Jones, "secure network" is an oxymoron. The word "delete" isn't in his vocabulary. Password-protect your computer and you'll make his day. And if you really get on Jones' bad side, he'll take complete control of your PC--and your first clue will be when you open your door and the boys in overcoats start flashing badges at you. If you're among the anonymous thousands of cyber bad guys who inhabit the Internet's underbelly, Jones is your worst nightmare. The retired New York City detective works on the law enforcement sidelines building ...

PERSPECTIVE ON THE PRESIDENCY Prosperity Does Not a Legacy Make It's how the largess is used. In that regard, the Clinton administration has fallen far short. By RICHARD N. GOODWIN Perhaps the most notable characteristic of the Clinton administration has been the belief that to talk about a problem is to deal with it or at least to persuade others that you are dealing with it. Thus we have been treated to passionate discussions on race or education unaccompanied by any substantial measures. The president's latest proposal to expand Medicare, although welcome, is a poignant reminder of how much time ...

POLITICS: Measure would have let expatriates in U.S. cast ballots for Mexican presidency. Mexican senators Thursday blocked a measure that could have enabled millions of Mexicans living abroad to vote in that country's 2000 presidential race. Mexican groups in the United States that backed the bill accused the senators of making a critical, shortsighted mistake. "This was a hugely irresponsible act for which the major political parties will pay, and pay dearly," said Carlos Olamendi, a San Clemente businessman and member of Coalition of Mexicans Abroad, one of several dozen organizations lobbying to allow up to 10.7 million Mexicans ...

In view of the controversy over the display of the "Ten Commandments" I have acquired a large bold print poster of the commandments that I would like to display on my front porch which will be easily readable from the street. I need a legal question answered. The elementary, middle and high school are located on a hill behind my house and hundreds of children walk past my house on their way to school. Could I be sued by someone for this display? This is not a joke and I would appreciate any help some of you might give me.If ...

MANILA (Reuters) - Overwhelmed by the number of children at a crowded subsidized housing project, President Joseph Estrada told Filipinos Friday they should suppress their urges. ``Frankly, perhaps we are having some difficulty making houses because we're too preoccupied making babies,'' Estrada said when he visited beneficiaries of a housing project for squatters in Kalookan City, a suburb of Manila. ``There are too many children here, maybe we should suppress our urges a little bit,'' he added. Estrada's nation of 74 million people is swelled by 195 births every hour. Its population grows 2.3 percent each year. Estrada urged families ...

LIKE THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, AMERICA'S BANNER DESERVES RESPECT A number of opportunities will arise tomorrow through Monday to honor the flag of the United States of America. The spirit of a nation is measured in the respect that its citizens accord to its institutional codes of behavior, and so it is with some concern that we have observed what may be disrespect toward --or, we hope, ignorance about --the U.S. flag. Perhaps it would be appropriate, leading into this weekend, to review parts of the Flag Code, Title 36, U.S.C. Chapter 10: ***Sec. 177: During the ceremony ...
