Clintonic Banking Clintonic Banking by George W. Maschke 18 June 1999 President Clinton has approved a covert action program that calls for the Central Intelligence Agency to try to destabilize the Yugoslav Government of Slobodan Milosevic, United States officials said. ... The plan does not include American military assistance for the Kosovo Liberation Army, the officials said. But they say it does call for computer attacks on foreign bank accounts held by Milosevic and other Serbian leaders, such as draining assets or altering banking records. --James Risen The New York Times 18 June 1999 Mister Clinton Gives ...

Now that we have achieved victory in Kosovo, the time comes to ponder the lessons learned. What did we achieve?Of course, we do not know the final chapter of NATO's occupation, so we can only speculate about short-term effects. But presume that all goes well, and we do not end up taking casualties in a bloody guerrilla war. What will that mean? Victory wasn't cheapFirst, of course, our efforts to restore and protect Kosovo will be long and expensive. Operation Restore Democracy in Haiti is cheap by comparison -- and no one is touting it as a victory. Most ...

“We simply don’t have enough money.”James W. Dyer, Staff Director,House Appropriations Committee. June 6, 1999That the staff director of the Republican-controlled House Appropriations Committee should argue for breaking the spending caps put in place by the Republican Congress in 1997 may tell us all we need to know about what happens next in the budget process. A Republican Congress, which has raised spending 13% since taking control in 1994 on a pledge to reduce federal government spending, now thinks it needs to spend even more. The pace of spendingWill Congress break the spending caps? I think so (you can ...

in the Gore Campaign, Clinton & Gore have launched a secret plan to use Hillary's candidacy as a lightening rod to divert negative attention from Gore and allow him to distance himself from the Clinton's. They have paid hacks to spread disinformation to the Press and post disinformation on FreeRepublic and other boards to try and make it "appear" that Gore does not approve of Clinton and is not bothered by the protests at his campaign stops. Privately, Gore is outraged about the protests at his rallies and has reamed out the Secret Service for allowing it to happen. Anyone ...

MUMBAI: Chief of naval staff Admiral Sushil Kumar said here on Thursday that the Pakistani navy has now been placed in a state of red alert and is preparing for action. ``When the Army and the Air Force are involved, the situation could spill over to sea. The Pakistani navy has made tactical deployments and its state of alert can be monitored through various agencies,'' he said during a media briefing on board the battleship ``INS Delhi'' about the preparedness of the Indian Navy in case the Kargil conflict spills over to the sea. Asked whether he foresaw the possibility ...

Ethnic issues have always been complicated and sensitive. As these issues are the internal affairs of a country, no external forces should interfere with them. Each country should formulate correct ethnic policies in accordance with its own national conditions and properly deal with its own ethnic issues, so as to maintain ethnic unity, social stability, and economic development." It's been a long time since I've either heard or read about any public official speaking such words of wisdom. While you might be able to guess the origin of such a statement -- Kosovo -- you may have a more difficult ...

The top war-monger in Congress has been Senator John McCain, Republican from Arizona, seeker of the Republican presidential nomination. In one rhetorical bombing run after another, McCain has bellowed for "lights out in Belgrade" and for NATO to "cream" the Serbs. At the start of May he began declaiming in the US senate for the NATO forces to use "any means necessary" to destroy Serbia. McCain is often called a "war hero", a title adorning an unlovely resume starting with a father who was an admiral and graduation fifth from the bottom at the US Naval Academy, where he earned ...

His honor What? An accused official who, far from denying the charge, admits it? And to the lowly press at that. Here's what Municipal Judge Lee Munson told a group of reporters gathered in his chambers after the morning session of his court one day last week: "Last night, I was stopped by state troopers for driving while intoxicated. I had been at my hobby shop on Stage Coach Road, and I had been drinking. I shouldn't have been drinking. I apologize to the citizens of Little Rock and the people of the state. I intend to plead guilty." ...

YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO . . . . . Every now and then, amid the gigabytes of worthless information that clog e-mail accounts on a daily basis, a diamond in the rough will appear that begs to be polished and displayed for all to see. Such a treasure popped up in a recent missive from someone whose identity is a mystery. But it immediately grabbed the attention of this devotee of the Constitution since the subject line was "Bill of Rights." The message said that the following "Bill of No Rights" was attributed to state Rep. Mitchell ...

Here's a code of ethics for dealing with flamers. Feel free to add your own: 1. Flamers have as much right to express themselves as you do. Banning them is no more an option than censoring the Net is possible. 2. Flaming isn't personal. Someone who doesn't know you and hasn't met you can't possibly be relating to you, yourself, your ideas. Don't take it personally. 3. Flamers should never be responded to in kind. Personal attacks are unethical. Every civil reply is a victory for free speech, and a small triumph for the freest information culture in the world. ...

PLEASANTON -- Nicholas Lassonde's commencement speech has been cut short by school officials, who say he can't urge his fellow students to follow God. When the A-plus student gets up on the podium for Amador Valley High's graduation today he will give only half of his planned speech. After the first four paragraphs, he'll stop and announce that the rest has been censored. He'll be allowed to say things such as: "We reap what we sow," but the district has drawn the line at "I urge you to seek out the Lord, and let him guide you" and other references ...

For Immediate Release, June 18, 1999 Contact: Tom Fitton, (202) 646-5172 CONGRESS PUSHES CHINAGATE SCANDAL TO "BACK BURNER" But Gore Fundraising Will Highlight Scandal (Washington, D.C., June 16, 1999) -- Judicial Watch predicted that the Cox Report was about as far as Congress would go in scrutinizing the Chinagate scandal, because big donors from both political parties were involved in the wholesale bribery of the Clinton-Gore Administration, which was the quid pro quo for its turning a blind eye to Chinese espionage and the transfer of high technology to the Communist Chinese. Recent weeks have proven the point, as nary ...

For editorial and discussion uses. Not for commercial distribution. The 'heroes' of Serbia While NATO peace keepers uncover mass graves this week, Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milosevic's loyal followers are hailing him with praises: "Long live the heroic Serbian people headed by President and Supreme Commander Slobodan Milosevic." The way he's been touring the country, giving patriotic speeches and talking about dreams for the future, you'd think he had just invented world peace, rather than serving as the director of a massive campaign of brutal ethnic cleansing. Even as the Serbian strongman talked about building a stronger nation, British Foreign Office ...

Nothing New A listener to my radio show sent me a copy of a newspaper piece from long ago that again demonstrates the truth of Ecclesiastes’ dictum: “There is nothing new under the Sun.” The great H.L. Menken excoriated gun control efforts in a 1925 column in the Baltimore Evening Sun, titled “The Uplifters Try It Again.” According to Menken, the Nation Magazine had just announced the formation of a committee to persuade Congress to ban inter-State traffic in revolvers, an idea he denounced in no uncertain terms, and with logical thought that applies very much to the current national ...

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - The Philippine president will not interfere in a U.S. request for the extradition of one of his friends, who allegedly made illegal campaign contributions to President Clinton, his spokesman said today. The U.S. Embassy asked the Philippine government on Thursday to arrest and extradite Filipino businessman Mark Jimenez on charges of tax evasion, wire fraud, conspiracy, giving false statements and campaign financing charges. An indictment issued September in Washington accused Jimenez of illegally giving nearly $40,000 to Democratic Party candidates. Those charges were incorporated into an indictment in April that also accuses him of conspiracy, tax ...
