Five Morgan Hill students sent home for wearing American flag T-shirts

2:11 PM By Lindsay Bryant

Five male students were asked to leave Live Oak High School this morning because they were wearing American flag T-shirts on Cinco de Mayo. Officials at the school could not be reached for comment, but one student said administrators called the T-shirts "incendiary."

"They said we were starting a fight, we were fuel to the fire," said Matt Dariano, a sophomore.

The five teens were sitting at a table outside during their brunch break around 10:10 a.m. when Assistant Principal Miguel Rodriguez asked two boys to take off their American flag bandannas that they were wearing on their heads. In the same conversation, student Dominic Maciel said, Rodriguez told the group to "walk with him to the office."

Dariano called his mother Diana, who spread the word to the other parents and all arrived soon after to have a conference with Rodriguez and Principal Nick Boden.

Maciel said they were told they must turn their T-shirts inside-out or be sent home. Maciel said they were told it wouldn't be considered a suspension but Rodriguez did not want any fights to break out among Mexican students and the group showing their American pride.

The boys said they thought turning the American flag inside-out was disrespectful, so all went home.

Dariano said Rodriguez indicated to him that while other students were wearing American flags, the group of five was "the easiest target to cause trouble."

"We were not going to start a fight. We wanted to show our pride," Dariano said. "In light of all of this, there are people with painted flags in red, green and white and yet the boys can't wear the American flag," Diana said.

How is the photo outrageous? Photoshopped - but what’s not true?

Cinco de Mayo was made up by the Corona Beer company years ago to drum up their beer sales.

Was that when the did the "slice of lime" in the beer thing?

Cinco de Mayo is not really celebrated in Mexico...so the fact that it is so widely celebrated here makes it more like Kwanza than other holidays.

Nutmeg, I read that the bottom sheet maybe a Photoshop add-on.

Of course the top half of the sign is more than enough to get any real American’s blood boiling.

To these four young men I say, thank you for stepping up and displaying the American flag with pride. THESE ARE THE TIMES THAT TRY MEN’S SOULS. Do not be afraid to show support for our country. You are AMERICANS, AND PATRIOTS ALL! STEP UP, SPEAK OUT AND KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE. REMEMBER WHAT OUR FOREFATHERS SUFFERED, HOW OUR SOLDIERS IN WARS PAST SUFFERED, IN SUPPORT OF THE CONSTITUTION, FREEDOM AND LIBERTY. LET’S SHOW THE STUFF THAT WE ARE MADE OF!

I seem to remember in the 80s beer and snack companies used it in commercials- then people started having Cinco de Mayo parties. Some border towns had parades, and other activities similiar to small country fairs. I stopped in a border town yesterday to buy a soda- everyone in that town was drunk including the two people working in the little market, and it was only about 4 pm. They were all gearing up to go to the Pancho Villa Saloon festivities planned for last night. My hubby just got out of the hospital so I had forgotten it was Cinco de Mayo- I was in a hurry to get through that town before some drunk ran into me or shooting or some other drama started.

You came to this country illegally with YOUR HAND OUT, READY TO GET YOURS. You came to this country and did not have to work toward legal immigration...you stole entry into this country, feeling no love for this country, the Constitution, ASSIMILATION in any form, i.e. language or unification with our culture. So, in your mind it’s the illegals against the citizens of the USA!

Leave this country peacefully and come in the right way, LEGALLY AS PER THE LAW. Our government has failed to protect us, the citizens of the USA by supporting the immigration law, but the CITIZENS OF THE USA AND INDIVIDUAL STATES WILL NOT ALLOW THE IMMIGRATION LAW TO BE BROKEN FURTHER...WE WILL STOP THIS INVASION INTO OUR COUNTRY!

Freedom is not free...you must obey the laws and believe in the Constitution. WE THE PEOPLE WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO REMAIN IN THIS COUNTRY ILLEGALLY, AND WE WILL STOP YOU AT THE BORDER. COUNT ON IT.

I’ll bet that your jeans did not have the knees out and holes in the butt. And you always wore a belt.

True. A belt and socks were mandatory. No ripped out knees and holes everywhere. Thats what patches were for. LOL!

As far as their claim to parts of the U.S. as part of the Aztec Empire that is a joke too. The Aztec lands seemed large at the time but were all in the region of where Mexico City is now- nowhere near where the U.S. Southwest is today. I do have a plan though- we should deport all those claiming any right to parts of the U.S. back to the area of the old Aztec lands as I am sure it is far, far from where any of them came from. At least then maybe they could figure out where the Aztec lands were, maybe they can file a claim with Mexico.

A made-up holiday ...

Mi amigas latina told me that yesterday. Not a big deal in Mexico.

However, mi amigos Americano said “Any excuse for a party” and went to the bar after work.

I can see the county lawyer for the county board now getting the sweats. This goes all the way to the Supreme Court and he’s way outside his abilities. Every kid can now ask why teach American history or English...and the school has to do a funny dance step to get their point across. I’d bring the five kids in....have a personal apology by the county board to each student...offer them Dallas Cowboy tickets...and promise to never put down the US flag ever again. Thats about the only way to get out of this mess fast.

What does the young lady, referred to in the article, mean when she says “it’s our day, the only day we can show our spirit.”? She is a US citizen, or should be. It is obvious that she has not integrated into the US! By her own speech she separates herself from the rest of America and excuses herself from loyalty to the United States. What is that all about?!! Again, it fosters an “us” against “you” atmosphere - where Mexicans are pitted against Americans - in a nation where all are supposed to be equal under the law and all are supposed to be united in our approach to one another as citizens. I don’t like this approach to living in America. I don’t like it at all! Not to mention the fact that the US flag was subjugated to the colors of a neighboring country, in the US to avoid confrontation with someone who may become offended by the Stars and Stripes. To me it is not only offensive, it is unacceptable!

Never effing happen. Do you really think the martinet who is the Ass. Principal is going to back off? No way. If anything the kids who wore the flags are in for retribution from the (ahem) Mexican kids with a wink and a nod from the administraion.

I was listening to the local news. One of kids that was interviewed thought it was offensive to see white kids wearing American flags.

I am guessing the kid would have been okay with a Che t-shirt.

My head hurts.
