I didn't say that (the Hillary moron) was an insult to the pro-Miers crowd. What I meant is that it set EVERYBODY off, after that point the thread was absolutely crazy! From that point on, no matter whether you were a pro, anti, or wait-and-see, everyone posted based on emotions rather than logic. I have only seen that kind of thing once before, and that was on a Schaivo thread.

The Miers announcement Live Thread should have a permanent link on the FR home page to show what happens when we all fly off the handle.

I saw Patrick Leahy just about doing the dance of joy...over the fact that the conservatives smacked down Bush's pick....and that Bush's "capitol" that he had from his reelection is now GONE....

IOW---the dems will be really loaded for bear now...because they know that some conservatives don't trust Bush to make good decisons and they will exploit that.

Great. Lets see a nomination of a gas station attendant for Secy. of Energy.

There wasn't a Secretary of Energy in the Founders' day, but had there been, the early Congresses would have thought that a splendid idea. Granted, we live in a different time, with different expectations. Today, the "common man" (and woman) is only expected to fork out around 49% of his income to the government and like it.

How about the fact that she is a human being....that kind of respect..but she was treated like just so much dog poop ...

Harriet Miers' humanity has never been in question ... has never been attacked ... and, has never been the problem.

Only Miers' suitability to be confirmed to a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court of the United States has ever been attacked ... justifiably attacked.

"That's what I'm having a hard time over coming, that, and that some FReepers can't see that's what's happened."

That's exactly my problem and some FReepers are simply refusing to acknowlege that's what happened. Not those who made their decisions AFTER the hearings began and facts came out, those who started the bashfest the day she was nominated, are claiming victory right now and predicting the complete death of the Bush administration for the next three years.

Sorry, but real conservatives wouldn't be celebrating. Lazz and Petronski had objections, but their posts aren't amounting to a savage victory dance (just using you guys as contrast, sorry).

NO real conservative denies someone the right to due process. This was agenda politics at it's worst by those who hate the president with a passion and live to get him out of office.

Reagan wasn't God, or even his son. He made mistakes, but he was still the greatest President in the last several generations. Let's not confuse great and perfect. Reagan was great, only Roger Staubach was perfect ;)

Reagan did give amnesty to millions of illegals. It was supposed to be a one shot deal, a compromise where in return for amnesty we would get toughened border protection and improved enforcement to the point that we would never have that many illegals here again.

Of course, as with most compromises, the liberals won. They got the amnesty they wanted for the illegals, but the borders stayed as lax as ever, and even more illegals have now flooded in.

It's beginning to look like no nominee but Janice Rogers Brown will be acceptable to some.

And Specter has said he will not support someone who has been filibustered in the past.

Bush is not going to nominate Brown when he has others, like Edith Clement or Consuela Callahan, he can consider.

If they will agree to the nomination, that is.

Didn't Reagan also give amnesty to millions of illegals???

Yep. Raised taxes TWICE, too.

What you said need to be amplified:

And now all the Miers haters are gearing up to do the same to the next person the President nominates.

Sad, isn't it?

President Bush didn't "cave." His nominee withdrew her candidacy when the Dems requested privileged communications between her and the President. She bowed out so that the Dems couldn't compel her to break attorney/client confidentiality.

It's all in the articles that are coming out. I suggest you read them before throwing stones at Conservatives for this turn of events.

Some Republicans out there WANT to keep abortion as an national election issue.

You may have a point. For some, having the issue is more important than solving the problem.

As much as I love the idea of JRB on the court, if she get's rejected, send up another conservative originalist, and another, and another if need be. In the end, the idea of conservative originalism will win, and that is more important that any one person.

I could not agree more. After the reaction to Meirs, maybe Frist and other Senate Repubs with higher ambitions are getting the idea that a wimp out may doom them in any presidential primary.

Go W go, nominate someone who will certainly rule based on the constitution, not personal beliefs. Is that so much to ask?

Guaranteed. Where I live, you can't get your uber-conservatives elected without mainstream Republican votes. From now on, any candidate that comes out of your ranks in my district/state will not get my vote.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of. This is a tough one because if conservatives truly were opposed to Miers for the right reasons, then that is their right, and their constituents should expect no less. Having said that, were it just debate, that would be one thing. However, it seems that the Pubbies were eating their own and this is a sign of weakness to the Dems. They are like sharks circling their pray when they smell blood in the water.
