Russian tanks with their tops blown off are just the latest sign that Russia's invasion of Ukraine isn't going to plan.
Hundreds of Russian tanks are thought to have been destroyed since Moscow launched its offensive, with British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace on Monday estimating it had lost as many as 580.
But Moscow's problems go beyond the sheer number of tanks it has lost. Experts say battlefield images show Russian tanks are suffering from a defect that Western militaries have known about for decades and refer to as the "jack-in-the-box effect." Moscow, they say, should have seen the problem coming.

Stunning that the Ruskies carried this flaw into each next generation. What on earth were they thinking?
“If you don’t get out within the first second,....”
You will in the second........................
Yes, the Russians have had 500,000 casualties, and have been driven back to Moscow.
St. Petersburg has been renamed St. Zalinskyburg!
The Brit Defense head is Ben Wallace? Aren’t Brit offials supposed to have hyphenated names like Shelby Whithe-Harwick or Throckmorton Pennyweather-Smythe?
“The problem relates to how the tanks’ ammunition is stored. Unlike modern Western tanks, Russian ones carry multiple shells within their turrets. This makes them highly vulnerable as even an indirect hit can start a chain reaction that explodes their entire ammunition store of up to 40 shells.”
“The resulting shockwave can be enough to blast the tank’s turret as high as a two-story building, as can be seen in a recent video on social media.”
Propaganda! No Russian tanks have been lost!
You JewNaziSoros lover who wants war with Russia! You work for Raytheon!

No one mentioned it to them...until now
Of course, the Ukrainians are basically driving the same tanks, so....
CNN shouldn’t be putting out how our tanks are designed
the Ukrainians are basically driving the same tanks
correct
Are you trying to say the tanks are the best in the world?
So that’s what those big crank handles are for. You’d think the crews would have time to escape before the music gets to the point well-known to all children, though.
"If someone tries to sell you a used Soviet tank, say "Nyet!""
This was not long after he had written Rainbow Six, with some help, about an insane computer software billionaire who undertook a plan to wipe out 99 percent or so of humanity.
He died not long after that, IIRC. But I digress...
Actually, they knew it since the invention of the Tank. They don’t care about the crew, just the outcome and as we can see to some degree, the outcome is not so good when your tank army is being decimated by ATGM/ATMs. You see, the west care enough about the crews (because they are actually the weapon, the tank is just the tool) to make them safer and well enough armored not just at the glacis and turret front, but pretty much everywhere. Our tanks have long had blast compartments and access doors that expose the crew to ammunition risks only when opened and then only for a brief moment.
Far be it from me to take up for CNN, but everyone already knows, at least in this regard. It’s not like they’re publishing the secrets of the British-designed Chobham armor or anything like that, that’s still classified.
The Soviets have never really given a damn about the safety of their crews so redesigning their tanks to preserve life was not a consideration.
I’ll give the Russians a bit of credit for designing the T-14 with a remote controlled turret and an up armored crew compartment. What remains to be seen is if this design gets past the initial production and makes it into the final procurement design.
Based on every previous platform the Soviets/Russians have rolled out I suspect they’ll once again sacrifice crew safety and comfort for cost savings. The pinhead Russian military accountants will always go for quantity over quality.
