Stunning that the Ruskies carried this flaw into each next generation. What on earth were they thinking?

Yes, the Russians have had 500,000 casualties, and have been driven back to Moscow.

St. Petersburg has been renamed St. Zalinskyburg!

The Brit Defense head is Ben Wallace? Aren’t Brit offials supposed to have hyphenated names like Shelby Whithe-Harwick or Throckmorton Pennyweather-Smythe?

“The problem relates to how the tanks’ ammunition is stored. Unlike modern Western tanks, Russian ones carry multiple shells within their turrets. This makes them highly vulnerable as even an indirect hit can start a chain reaction that explodes their entire ammunition store of up to 40 shells.”

“The resulting shockwave can be enough to blast the tank’s turret as high as a two-story building, as can be seen in a recent video on social media.”

They do appear to have their turrets blown completely off, thanks to the design.

This is actually - shock - a good article from CNN. The points about the vulnerability of the Soviet/Russian auto-loading system is well known, and they also made a good point about crew losses and the difficulty of replacing them.

Of course, the Ukrainians are basically driving the same tanks, so....

So that’s what those big crank handles are for. You’d think the crews would have time to escape before the music gets to the point well-known to all children, though.

The Soviets have never really given a damn about the safety of their crews so redesigning their tanks to preserve life was not a consideration.

I’ll give the Russians a bit of credit for designing the T-14 with a remote controlled turret and an up armored crew compartment. What remains to be seen is if this design gets past the initial production and makes it into the final procurement design.

Based on every previous platform the Soviets/Russians have rolled out I suspect they’ll once again sacrifice crew safety and comfort for cost savings. The pinhead Russian military accountants will always go for quantity over quality.

The T-80, another Russian tank seeing action in the Ukraine invasion, has a similar missile loading system.

Does the author understand that there's a difference between what is commonly called a "missile" and what is called a shell?

Isn’t it so nice of cnn to tell the whole world of the defect so that putin can simply start the redesign process now?

It reminds me of the written press of WWII showing images and pointing out that the B-17 had design flaws so that enemies knew how to attack B-17s.

The press in any venue are the scourge of the world!

The Russians are incompetent. In retrospect is a wonder that anyone was ever really afraid of them and their conventional capabilities.

The tank design flaw is true. I don't buy into our involvement in the war, and Russia's crap military is just another reason to not be involved. Russia may be an equal nuclear threat to us, but on the ground, air and sea they are substandard. Additionally, their command and control doctrine is inferior to ours (less our woke generals). Here's the important fact to understand: Russia knows this too.

Quite simply, Russia is not a threat to us. They have to prey on pissant countries like Georgia and Ukraine. They know they don't stand a chance against us, and really I don't think there is any desire for them to be against us.

Here's an apt and pithy quote that fits the sitution: “Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.” - Sun Tsu

This is true for our military. Our woke military industrial complex constantly bemoans our weaknesses. Yes, there are some, but it is completely over inflated. They do this to stay on the tax dollar gravy train.

Meanwhile, there is no honest investment in the things that would really make our military stronger. More importantly there is never any effort to rid our military of the things that are weaknesses.

Let's get our house in order before spending America deeper into inflation and debt.

In today's world, with drones and rapid fire controlled precision artillery, the tank has about the same combat value as horses were to the 7th Calvary to Custard at the Little Big Horn.

They were OK to ride in on, but hell to die on.

If it were Pickett's Charge, with an army carrying single shot rifles, OK, I'll take the tank.

In today's war, the enemy may not even be in the same time zone, and he sends a rocket up your ass {or turret}.

I was a medic attached to an artillery battery {155MM split trails} six decades ago, and even back then, I always questioned the mentality of the troopers that jumped into the belly of those rolling coffins.

Our guys were 10-12 miles behind the tanks, pouring hell on the poor bastards that were shooting close up.

But back then, the tankers had an edge against the foot soldier, today, they never even see the laser pointer that seals their doom.

The tank is good for crowd control, against un-armed, rock throwers, but against today's technology, only the beltway bandits {and their paid pimp brass, at the bloated Octagon} are in favor of more tanks.

Teats on a bull.
