Trump’s Softened Stance on Visas Alarms Some Immigration Critics
New York Times ^ | March 4 2016 | Julia Preston

Amid the sparring and free-flying insults of Thursday night’s Republican presidential debate, Donald J. Trump said he wanted to expand the number of visas available for highly skilled immigrants.

His remarks caused shock among some supporters who have seen Mr. Trump as a bulwark against an influx of foreigners taking American jobs.

In an immigration blueprint he released in August, in the early days of his surprising charge toward the Republican nomination, Mr. Trump said the visas for highly skilled workers were part of what he called “disastrous” immigration policies that had “destroyed our middle class.” He gave detailed proposals on fixing the visa program to protect Americans.

But on Thursday, responding to a question from Megyn Kelly of Fox News, one of the debate moderators, Mr. Trump said: “I’m changing. I’m changing. We need highly skilled people in this country, and if we can’t do it, we’ll get them in. But, and we do need in Silicon Valley, we absolutely have to have.”

He means if a company has qualified applicants that they should be hired before taking a guest worker.

Immigration, Illegal immigration, H1B visa, L1-visa, B-1 Visa, O-1 Visa

Megyn asked for highly skilled immigration.
For highly skilled O-1 visa is used. To have this visa, One should have patents or Olympics/World medal holder or Actor or designers. Very strict criteria.

Immigration is Green Card.

Her question was incorrect. Trump clarification was right.

Average people have no idea about immigration or work permit etc. They are not interchangeable.

At the very least Trump’s insistence on being unscripted is at this level a very risky approach.

It’s not like Trump has decades building a reputation and policies on these issues. He can’t afford to wing it.

And he can’t afford to keep talking in shorthand.

I have to conclude he was tired and he is making decisions and announcements on the fly.

You have to prepare people for your policies and policy shifts, I’m not even sure he did change anything. It was not well presented.

He said he had to be flexible, can't quote him exactly.

Read he walked back killing families of terrorists and killing Americans. It's hard to keep up with him; his positions keep changing. Some of it is for the good, I can't imagine where the H1B visa program an American can't be found to do the work.

It's a rip off of American workers. We had a glut of engineers because of outsourcing and H1B. I don't know how easy it is for American engineers to find positions now.

Trump tried to take the high road last night , but the harping little Chihuahua’s were relentless in trying to take it into the mud ... who should we vote for and why ?

Holy Crap!

What debate were you watching!?

Do you actually believe what you are saying or are trying to convince some weak-minded undecideds?

Trump and Rubio were effing 3rd graders; hurling juvenile insults back and forth.

It amazes me how BLINDED by the cult of personality some seemingly sane Freepers have become.

I’m not sure why he said he was changing. He said this long ago about foreign students who graduate from our universities. This isn’t anything new or different. I think he was tired because he flew in from a rally in Maine. He needs to take a few days off and rest. But, he isn’t softening or changine. Get over yourself.

>>> He means if a company has qualified applicants that they should be hired before taking a guest worker.

This is already in place, but immigration lawyer and companies cheat.

According to H1b visa -
Companies are required to post salary of person they are hiring on H1B visa . Staff can check that if these people are paid lower than current employee. And they can report to INS.

How they cheat ?

Indian companies maintain one room offices in Florida and other states where labor laws are very weak. They post information in those offices pantry and no one report.

I am sure he is exhausted. But you know what? I want someone who is going to research something AS PRESIDENT and then make a decision. I mean that is one of the problems with current politicians. They promise the world and then don’t do it. At least with Trump he might say something but then goes back to read up about it and gets his thoughts together. Quite frankly I don’t want a President who thinks he knows it all and doesn’t need to research and find out how things REALLY work. I don’t know. I guess these little things don’t bother me. He will get it right and do what needs to be done to clean up this mess. But it is going to be messy and we are not going to be happy with Trump 100 percent of the time. I am cool with that.

You have no idea about issue. He is not softening, media jokers who are clueless themselves are fooling you. majority of US born have no idea about whole immigration/work permit etc.
One can’t interchange words as Megyn did and expected different outcome.

Man, I thought he was masterful! Those two yapping Cuban dinks, were incessant, and disgraceful, particularly that bastard Cruze with his ‘breathe Donald, breathe bull$hit! If I’d have been Trump, I’d have choked the little obnoxious, nasal-tongued bastard right there on TV! In light of last night, I don’t see how anyone could vote for that pseudo-smug pr1ck. Or his little culo buddie Boobio!

Hope we can stop that. I truly believe that Trump wants to bring our country back and will put Americans first, no doubts.

“I’m changing, I’m changing” said Trump when explaining his most recent inconsistency on visas.

Is Trump to be believed? That he is changing from his early firm stance on work visas? Or is he not changing, and just isn’t in control of what comes out his mouth?

I believe there is a difference between having Indian head hunters searching for U. S. job classifications to savage, and some Indian students just graduating college with top degrees, that might be good to incorporate into our society.

Top people in their field in the area of physics and other desired areas may be reasoned for some H1-B visa consideration.

Wholesale replacement of people at Disney or anywhere else, no.

I agree. I think he’s talking about poaching top talent from other countries. Not wholesale replacement of Americans.

I agree, and I’m talking about people who came to our country to attend our universities, who are ready to go home, or remain here and be productive.

A little common sense goes a long way here.

Of course we don’t want to see our jobs ravaged by big groups coming direct from nations who can work here for half the going wage and destroy jobs here.

If it’s a person that may contribute to some incredible new discoveries, I’m all for it.
