Trump’s Softened Stance on Visas Alarms Some Immigration Critics
New York Times ^ | March 4 2016 | Julia Preston

Amid the sparring and free-flying insults of Thursday night’s Republican presidential debate, Donald J. Trump said he wanted to expand the number of visas available for highly skilled immigrants.

His remarks caused shock among some supporters who have seen Mr. Trump as a bulwark against an influx of foreigners taking American jobs.

In an immigration blueprint he released in August, in the early days of his surprising charge toward the Republican nomination, Mr. Trump said the visas for highly skilled workers were part of what he called “disastrous” immigration policies that had “destroyed our middle class.” He gave detailed proposals on fixing the visa program to protect Americans.

But on Thursday, responding to a question from Megyn Kelly of Fox News, one of the debate moderators, Mr. Trump said: “I’m changing. I’m changing. We need highly skilled people in this country, and if we can’t do it, we’ll get them in. But, and we do need in Silicon Valley, we absolutely have to have.”

“Trump put out a clarification ...end of story ...”

Somebody put out a clarification - even though he spoke very clearly, saying he was “changing”.

Who do I believe - Trump or Trump?

Love Trump, but the man really needs to take a few days off of the campaign trail and just study what’s written on his own website. H1B’s are abused, illegal immigration is out of control, as is chain legal immigration, but it’s also true that some of the people that we actually do want in the country, graduates of our top colleges and universities who might be looking to put down permanent roots, are actually shown the door and they shouldn’t be. It’s not inconsistent to say that, but you have to stop and analyze things for a moment in order to separate out the different issues.

Trump has trouble explaining this. He has said from the beginning he wants foreign students in American colleges to have a way to stay here. As of now, they have to leave when they graduate. He feels we lose valuable talent to other countries when we let the best slip away. But its different from H1b visas to replace American workers, he wants to let them stay but they would get their own jobs. On the other side of the issues.

What did Trump mean by, “I’m changing, I’m changing.”?

He is firmly where he started regarding immigration ...no other candidate comes close to Trump’s position on immigration ....

Since Trump says what he really thinks, that position might change. Example, when first asked about Syrian refugees he thought of families being chased out of their country and thought we should help.

The next day he got the actual numbers, saw pictures of the migration with mostly young, strong, combat-ready men and he changed his mind. I guess Megyn would prefer that Trump just stick with the idea of letting them in so we can become Germany because God forbid a candidate ever change their mind.

I wish I could hear it, clearly, from his lips, instead of being directed to his website. For some reason, he thinks it’s more important to spend his time hurling junior high insults, than to talk about his policy plans.

Trump’s immigration and border policies are the only reasons to vote for the orange clown. If he is “changing” from that, his candidacy is pointless.

” If he is “changing” from that, his candidacy is pointless.”

I agree. And he did say “I’m changing” Am I supposed to interpret that as “I’m NOT changing”?

He needs to spend a lot more time talking like a grown-up, about his policy plans, and a lot less time talking like a potty-mouthed junior high schooler. I was leaning strongly for Trump, but he is starting to REALLY turn me off.

Trump is NOT softening...trust me on this one...he is a ‘street fighter’ and he will nail everyone of these people to the wall when the time is right...you don't get to where he is in life without knowing how to fight to get what you want...

He is more determined than he has ever been on anything in his whole life, you get in his way and you will be taken out...he has proved this thru out this whole election cycle...and those people who think they can ram someone else down our throats are in for a mighty big surprise, they will go down just like dominoes....and have been...

They don't want him in Washington D.C. because he will throw out a lot of power, money hungry people who have been living off the American people like buzzards for years and they are in the biggest panic of their lives...

Trump made Trump and the only one that can take Trump out is Trump....Rush Limbaugh....remember that...

What does he mean “institute an absolute requirement to hire American workers first for every visa and immigration program ?”

“Trump is NOT softening...trust me on this one”

I shouldn’t have to “trust” anyone. I should be able to hear him talk about the damage to real people caused by H1B visas. Instead I hear about his hands and his polls and his private parts. He needs to grow up.

And Rubio started that one didn’t he, he started it right off the bat in the debate, you want to know about Trump and his issues, go to his site or listen to his rallies, he’ll tell you exactly what his issues are...

Don’t follow the sheep, learn on your own!!!

My sincere opinion is that he's learning as he goes. He doesn't know what is conservative and what's not. He's got a team that tries to bring him up to speed, but there are gaps that he has to "clarify" when he goes off script.

Best case scenario: he'll eventually learn what is conservative and govern that way if he wins.

Worst case scenario: he's trying to act conservative just to win the presidency and then he'll "rule" the way he's lived his entire life.
