President Obama on Saturday struck back aggressively at critics of his $3.6 trillion budget proposal, casting himself as a populist crusader whose "sweeping change" has angered Washington's entrenched special interests, and promised to fight them.
"I realize that passing this budget won't be easy. Because it represents real and dramatic change, it also represents a threat to the status quo in Washington," Mr. Obama said in his weekly video and radio address.
Mr. Obama's language was combative and confrontational, as he promised to fight for "American families."
"I know these steps won't sit well with the special interests and lobbyists who are invested in the old way of doing business, and I know they're gearing up for a fight as we speak. My message to them is this: So am I," he said.
Since he unveiled his budget blueprint on Thursday, the reaction in the financial markets and among the business community, not to mention the Republican party, has been decidedly negative.
Influential conservative economist Lawrence Kudlow wrote Friday that Mr. Obama was proposing "anti-growth" tax hikes that make "absolutely no sense" and are intended to promote a "left-wing social vision."
Mr. Obama, he said, was "declaring war on investors, entrepreneurs, small businesses, large corporations, and private-equity and venture-capital funds."
One day after announcing that U.S. combat troops would leave Iraq in 18 months, the president's weekly address was his first major response to budget criticisms. He portrayed critics as fat cats and power brokers who have enriched themselves at the cost of every day Americans.

“I know these steps won’t sit well with the special interests and lobbyists ....”
Yeah, “special interests” like TAXPAYERS and people who work for a living.
This guy is a real pantload.
What nonsequitur garbage. I can’t decide if he’s in way over his head or if he’s completely lost his mind.
That’s what I thought. Thanks for the links. I’ll place a bumper sticker on my truck’s rear window, right next to my Palin sticker!
Anyone in Congress that votes for this insanity will be held accountable for treason. I can not, in all my life, imagine a single dem let alone a repub supporting this illegal president anymore.
“Let it tank.”
Sadly, that seems to be our best option at this point.
Zero looks he’s swapping Bush’s War On Terrorism with his own War On Capitalism.
I just bust a gut recalling those debates when he was droning on about how NOW is NOT the time to be raising taxes.
The huge tax increases could be just enough to propel the US Economic system into a second depression...all the while Zero and his cohorts will have their outstretched arms yelling “come to papa” as he is then “FORCED” to nationalize just about everything useful in the US.
THEN, he will have his FIAR America.
When idiots get criticized, they lash out uncontrollably.
I love that.
Are they idiots, or is this part of their insider revolution?
Getting the American people to vote in socialism makes it much harder to discredit and retreat from socialism/fascism...whichever you prefer to call it.
The socialist is angry. Let us all hide (extreme sarcasm).
What great spin. This is ALL about special interests and lobby groups. He truly believes we are stupid.
Just damn - it’s all about jobs and the BO budget just doesn’t appear to be addressing that issue, at all.
Who did he run and hide behind after he said this? 14 posted on Saturday, February 28, 2009 4:12:59 PM by tsmith130
To which I say Joe Biden of course. You can't have better life insurance than an idiot like Joe. It wouldn't surprise me to know that Obama encourages Joe to go out and say this offensively stupid stuff. The more you hear from Joe-the better? Obama looks.
I quite agree with your analysis. It’s as if a sea captain, seeing a tidal wave on its way, orders the crew to drop anchor. That’s the effect of taxing “the rich” at this point.
>>>>To raise taxes on the top 1,2,5 or even 10 percent, during or soon after a deep recession, is to commit economic suicide.<<<<
I am TOTALLY convinced that this is his plan and his hope for our future.
He drives the US into an economic nuclear winter and then proclaims that this was ALL due to the greed of Capitalism and America will never go back to the failed policies of that past...then he begin the NEW USA as a State-run “Socialist” fairness loving country.
Man the life boats! They be about to sink.
Change is like the movie titanic...after the ghosts have come back to tell us everything is peaceful, now that everyone has froze to death and someone wrote a book about it.
Life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness needs to be defended...
