WASHINGTON A U.S. senator has weighed in on the continuing controversy over Barack Obama's eligibility for office by saying he has never seen proof the new president was actually born in Hawaii.
"Well, his father was Kenyan and they said he was born in Hawaii, but I haven't seen any birth certificate," Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., told constituents in Cullman County. "You have to be born in America to be president."

He says this 'They said he was born in Hawaii, but I haven't seen any birth certificate'
And then he backtracks.
BTW, Politico Ben Smith is an Obot.
That has already been addressed I do believe. A child cannot lose his or her citizenship because of the parent(s) actions.
I am aware of that, but I was just paraphrasing the argurment that has been talked to death on this and other fora. I'm pretty sure the courts would not let his US citizenship status be lost due to the actions of his parent(s). There is the problem of his travel to Pakistan in the early 1980's at a time when there were travel advisories against US citizens travelling to Pakistan due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. If Obama did travel to Pakistan under an Indonesian passport after the age of 18, that would be evidence of abandoning his US citizenship.
However, Stanley Ann Dunham was not 19 when BHO was born, even if he was born in Hawaii and if BHO Sr. is indeed listed as father, then there would still be the ‘5 years after age 14’ thing in effect at the time of his birth.
The ‘5 years after age 14’ phrase applies if the child is born outside the US not in the US.
I heard Shelby speak Friday. He did make mention of his caring about what kind of country his grandchildren would have left for them.
Good point.
What should we conclude?
Either the senator has found some new information that is about to break {not likely}, or..this is some sort of boob bait for us Bubbas.
Exhaustive proof? Where might I find this exhaustive proof, or any proof at all for that matter?
BTW, Politico Ben Smith is an Obot.
Yep, but Ben Smith has just updated saying that the Alabama paper is sticking by its story...this could get interesting.
Panama was an American territory and therefore part of America.
Otherwise one could argue that those of the nineteenth century born in the Louisiana Territory would have been ineligible to be President.
LOL!
“Racially motivated rumors”
They all do.
BTW, Politico Ben Smith is an Obot.
Perhaps. But I don't think he's lying. We'd have to believe that Ben Smith is lying, that the Senator's spokesman never spoke to him, and that the Senator stands by what he said.
Additionally, we'd now have to add the newspaper which reported the story in the first place to the pile of liars, too, since they are running a story saying that Shelby's office is calling the original report a "distortion"?
Cullman Times, UPDATE: Shelby's office calls Times report 'distortion'(^)
What’s so unconstitutional about it?
Otherwise one could argue that those of the nineteenth century born in the Louisiana Territory would have been ineligible to be President.
The Canal Zone was never a US territory. It was a concession by Panama. US law all the way back to 1790 recognized children born overseas to two parents who are US citizens to be "natural born citizens" of the US.
You’re in rare form these days - how are you?
UPDATE: I haven't been able to reach the Cullman Times to check for tape or transcript, but in the meantime, a fuller statement from Graffeo:
The Cullman Times article contains an incomplete account, and therefore a distortion, of Sen. Shelby's comments regarding President Obama's citizenship. At the town hall meeting in Cullman, Sen. Shelby laid out the Constitutional qualifications for the Presidency and said that, while he hasn't personally seen the President's birth certificate, he is confident that the matter has been thoroughly examined.
Yeah Shelby, his 'Certification Of Live Birth' (COLB) has been examined and determined to be a forgery. Obama's birth certificate, however, has not been seen.
Better: Need to keep my diabetes under control. It’s not easy...
Whoo hoo! I knew I liked Shelby!
You know, it seems that every time it looks like someone is finally stepping up to the plate with shoulders squared and a clear eyed look of resolve, it's just a mirage.
I wonder what Shelby'll think when he reads the glowing Thank You note I left him on his Senate website email... a touch of guilt, perhaps? Or will he shrug it off in the same way he's evidently doing with his comments about Obama's origins...
Getting weary of this BS. How about you? Time for teabags and pitchforks. Maybe throw in some tar and feathers too, just for good measure.
