Well, they're relevant to the extent that they call Bush's record in the National Guard into question, but they're irrelevent to the extent that they could possibly show that Kerry has lied about who served with him, how his wounds were inflicted, or whether he committed war crimes. There, the mainstream media answer for you.

Military records are only relevant if the candidate makes them relevant, or misstates his military service for the purpose of deceiving others.
To: MarkeyD
Totally irrelevant if you are Bush 41 running against Clinton or Dole against Clinton. Highly relevant if you are Kerry, though.

It would be better if worded differently such as:
Yes, always.
Yes, if the candidate has made his service a central part of his campaign.
No, never.

"Apparently John Kerry thinks so."
Kerry is citing his 'heroic' 4 months in Viet Nam in nearly every speech. His handlers are probably telling him that he and his party are considered weak on defense and national security which, in post-9/11 America, is a deal-killer for many voters.
Further, he's likely hoping that attention on his military service will deflect attention from his actions AFTER he came home.
Yet if anyone criticizes, questions specifics, offers alternative accounts, etc. concerning his vaunted tour in SE Asia, Kerry's minions cry foul.
Once again, the Demos want to have it both ways.

If it like makes Bush look bad, wullike.....yeah. But, like if it would make Kerry look like a flake y'know,...it's like all in the past, dude...and we should really be like..moving on. It's really simple, man."

No! However using them in a Presidetial campaign and not releasing the foundations of the campaign, warrants "the beef" to augment the rhetoric.

For all we know, Kerry got his "new shiny medals" from an empty field after an antiwar war protest. He's still hiding his military records. It's any ones guess.
