Has The Lost City Of Atlantis Been Discovered Off The Coast Of Chipiona In Cádiz?

A team of divers and archaeologists have made a discovery deep in the sea off the Gulf of Cadiz that they hope could possibly solve an enigma that is thousands of years old.

They uncovered large concentric circular structures that look like artificial walls which are said to bear similarities to Plato’s descriptions of the mysterious lost city of Atlantis.

At a press conference held in the Cádiz municipality of Chipiona this Saturday, September 30, the divers and technicians who carried out a scan of the area, spoke of their findings.

As confirmed by EFE, it will be presented at the South International Series Festival which is being held in Cádiz on October 8, reported larazon.es.

The location of the find has not been revealed publicly

Speaking at the press conference, the historian and archaeologist Mercedes de Caso Bernal indicated that the team was not going to reveal the location of these findings: ‘We have notified the corresponding administrations and it is they who are responsible for maintaining and protecting them’, he explained.

Boris Martínez Abad and Antonio Fernández Olivero, two of the diving team, explained that 10 years ago, while returning from one of their underwater explorations, they detected ‘some anomalies’ in the area with sonar. ‘We were going with empty oxygen tanks, so we marked the area and left it for other explorations’, they revealed.

They detected something ‘quite special’ under the water

In their subsequent dives, in an area with hardly any visibility, they said they thought they had detected shapes similar to walls, built with stones at right angles, something that was ‘quite special’.

As a result, they contacted the topographers and hydrographers Sergio Aleu Ruiz and Alejandro Aleu Ruiz. The two specialists used technology to carry out bathymetric surveys of the area, with which they detected structures rising from the seabed, with a height of five metres and some of them up to 450 metres long.

‘We are calling them walls, but they could be rock formations, natural, artificial, we don’t know’, they explained. The only thing they do know is that they have never before seen others like them in the area.

The team discovered ‘square and triangular stones’

Luis Silva, a marine biologist, also explained that during the dives they were surprised to see: ‘square and triangular stones, with such unnatural shapes, because right angles in nature are not very common’.

The archaeologist indicated that what they found is ‘the first data’ of an investigation that must continue with numerous technologies.

Among other things, he pointed out that they must verify whether these supposed walls form part of the mainland or if they could in fact be an independent island like the one Plato referred to in his texts about a mythical civilisation, where he spoke of a lost paradise that for many scholars is no more than a legend.

‘We don’t know what we have found, or what the name of what we have found is. That’s all we can say’, Mercedes de Caso Bernal commented at the conference with ‘maximum caution’.

Plato wrote about an empire built 11,000 years ago

Michael Donnellan, also an archaeologist, was nevertheless convinced that he was ‘on the verge’ of ‘a monumental event’. He assured that, after seven years of research, the structures located coincided ‘perfectly with Plato’s writings’.

The ancient Greek philosopher mentioned an empire built 11,000 years ago, which was formed ‘by a series of cities facing the sea’. It had a capital located on ‘an artificial island’ that was surrounded by concentric circular walls and in which some 20,000 people lived at the time.

Donnellan explained that in his research, which he had carried out ‘respecting the law’, he found ‘exact similarities’. He concluded: ‘We cannot say that it is that place, we are simply saying that it is very curious and that we are in the process of continuing our research’.

Wow, Flamethrowers are out, and over Atlantis of all things. Remarkable!
Interesting finds. Thanks Red Badger. A two-list ping topic.

That makes far more sense than it being s mythical place that has likely already been found elsewhere, and is still being studied now. There are archaeologists who believe the story of Atlantis was based on the volcanic demise of Santorini/Thera-home of the Minoan civilization-in 1600 BC-there are plenty of Greek stories about the Minoans being advanced people who were also considered sinful/bad by their neighbors-the historical and archaeological record-and recent findings-put it a lot closer to being Atlantis than one of the sunken ports off the cast of of Spain-and as you pointed out-most of those belonged to the Phoenicians anyway...

Plato was not exactly an explorer who based his historical knowledge on actual knowledge of the facts-and he wasn’t born until after 300 BC in any case-a long time after Atlantis supposedly existed-but he did make a good cautionary tale about it...

Humans have been that smart for probably 20-30,000 years if not earlier-trade and exploration was the reason for invention-travel to a place with new people and new trade goods, new women-or even a place to take over if it was better than your place and the occupants weren’t as good with weapons as your guys-no aliens needed. People have always been as smart as we are now-if they hadn’t been, all of us Caucasians and Asians would not have Neanderthal DNA like we do-people had to travel a long way early on to spread that around...

It certainly could be a settlement connected to the lost Iberian civilization of Tartessos, which did exist, @1200BC-700BC. This merged, it seems, with that of Phoenician settlement in the area. That whole region has rather mysterious ruins and artifacts.

The city of Tartessos itself has not really been identified, in spite of several definite mentions in ancient literature. Some say it is near Huelva, where there are visible ruins, some say it was drowned in the marshland of the Coto Donana, etc. Related settlements elsewhere have been tentatively identified.

Its curious how a civilization noted for trade, and moreover a literate one, with its own writing system, has so completely disappeared. Its probably the Tarshish mentioned in the Bible.

Anyway, artifacts labelled as Tartessian are in many Spanish museums, and I’ve been to lots. There is a good display in, of all places, Alcala de Henares. The one in Cadiz is certainly worth a visit.

One of many “Tartessian” artifacts - this one is in the Archaeological Museum in Madrid. Several similar ones are in Cadiz.

This again? There are always “Lost Cities” being found and lost again. I remember well the cities discovered off the coast of Chile, South America back in Feb 1966. Newspapers all carried stories of it. Haven’t heard a word about them since.

That’s not impossible with hand tools. It’s done today hand tools. The only limit on smoothness, leveling or any other measure of quality is patience. Is the person doing the work doing it right? If the answer is yes they can do it with anything. Sure a little easier with modern conveniences, but not always. You just can’t replace the feel of skilled hands.

‘Jude’, ‘Dude’, whatever. It was a stupid song when it came out, and the concensus of the kids on the school bus was that it was stupid. It’s still a stupid song today.

The long running ending.... in the words of Jed Clampett, “Pathetic, juuusst pathetic”.

Although, I’m more talking about the stone cities and finely cut stone walls that are worldwide, we can include the pyramids. The only reason why they say the Egyptians did it is because it’s in Egypt and the assumption is that it’s the work of man.

Although I do believe it is also the work of man, it may not be the work of post-Flood man, or at least soon after the Flood man. The time line of the building of the pyramids is only a comparatively few years after the flood, which is interesting to me.

It was a joke, dude.

Hey Dude and Imagine are just two songs I’ve “rewritten” for parody. Musta listened to Weird Al a little too much in my youth.

Yeah, I’ve ‘rewritten’ a few songs to truck driver lyrics: I’m the Sandman (Mister Sandman), Don’t be Cruel to the paving crew, Rock in the Quarry (Peace in the Valley), Trucking in a Winter Wonderland, Roll On (Rawhide), Everyone Knows its Windy.
