A comet not seen since Neanderthals walked the Earth is set to make a return trip - and astronomers have shared the first detailed image of the 'cosmic snowball.'
Formally known as C/2022 E3 (ZTF), the comet orbits the sun every 50,000 years and is set to make its closest approach to our planet on February 1, 2023....
....The comet is currently 117 million miles from Earth and is set to reach the sun on January 1, loop around and make its closest approach to our planet.
And E3 will be the first comet seen to the naked eye since the NEOWISE comet in July 2020....

Can you repeat that? I was taking a meteor shower.
every 50,000 years

Same amount of time between an honest politician is elected.
Since everything reported is twisted to include man made climate change I was interested to know what the earth was like 50,000 ago
“50,000 years BP the world was in a glacial stage (ice age), and megafauna (think mammoths and mastadons) still roamed the land. Neanderthals walked (among other things) alongside anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens). Humans looked very similar to us today, and lived in all parts of the world, probably (but not definitely) excluding the Americas (it’s debatable). Humans were already burying their dead and making art (and so were Neanderthals).
Animals back then were similar to those we see today (particularly in Africa), but bigger, and looked slightly different. There were cave (“short-faced”) bears and “sabre-tooth cats” (Smilodon), larger hyenas, larger “Dire” wolves, and elephant-sized sloths (Megatherium).
The world and its species were different depending on where you looked (North America’s ecosystem changed about 10,000 years ago, for example), and you would have to look into all the different species to see which ones completely died out versus those that evolved into the creatures we see today. To ask what all animals were like back then is complicated, but I believe “megafauna” is the best simple answer you’ll get.
Damn Neanderthals and their SUVs caused global warming and melted all the glaciers /s
I must be getting old...
You can see it in their cave etchings.
Daddy would have gotten us Uzi’s.🤪
Amazing that something so relatively small can travel so far and still be in the Sun’s grip.
I missed seeing it last time. I’ll set an alarm for it this time.
Hilarious. Mac10?
Correct. IIRC Dan Shea (bought and sold LOTS of movie guns when they went anti-gun in the 90s in CA) sold one of those MAC 10s for 4-5k when the prices were were ~<$1k.
That was a fun movie.
“Lucifer’s Hammer” By Niven and Pournelle
Good book read it again recently.
“Shower the people you love with meteors,
Show them the way that you feel...”
Maybe it will sprinkle some better seed down this time. The old seed has mutated into some bad weeds.
Comet
It will make your teeth turn green
Comet
It tastes like gasoline
Comet
It’ll make you vomit
So get some Comet, and vomit, today!
It’s hard to write a song about a comet that comes every 50 thousand years. But I like this one about another comet
