We're Starting Weight Watchers on Monday. Tips? Hints? Tricks? Favorite Recipes? Healthy Habits?

I pulled the trigger, yesterday. Been wanting to sign up and have been doing all the research. I just joined their very BASIC program; $3+ a week for 2 months and then three free or some such deal. Affordable. On-line. Self-directed. No mandatory meetings.

My Mom always used Weight Watchers when she wanted to shed some pounds, and I've spent 3/4 of my LIFE maintaining my weight to strict Army standards. Not FUN - but I also used to get a LOT more exercise than I do now, at age 62. Also, no longer working a job where I was on my feet all day, every day, has been an issue. (Retired in 2016.)

I LOVE to walk. I HATE to run. Even if something is chasing me, LOL!

We BOTH (Beau & I) need to shed some pounds. No one is going to be there to care for either of us as we dodder off into the Sunset, so staying HOME and HEALTHY is getting to be a necessity. I have slightly elevated blood pressure (take a mild diuretic for that), and Diabetes runs in my family, and I DO NOT want that! Losing weight will help with both.

Beau has PMR which is an inflammation of the joints; effects his shoulders and hips. Losing weight will also help with that.

Also, I want to be able to outrun any Zombies that show up! ;) (See my tag line.)

Yep. It's NOT Rocket Science. Less calories in, more calories burned. I KNOW what to do. I just need to DO IT! I cook completely from scratch; we eat whole foods, very little processed. If we go out to eat, it's once or twice a YEAR. We are NOT between-meal snackers, but we both NEED a little chocolate on a daily basis. :)

So, give me your best advice, tips, tricks, hints, motivators, etc. to start us off right! Thanks! :)

I lost 40 pounds in 90 days doing the following:

1. Controlling insulin level is THE key. Remember that carbs are exercise fuel ONLY. Never let carbs get between your last exercise of the day and going to bed. And just say NO to sugar.

2. Intermittent fasting really works. Try working towards one or two meals a day, no more than 6 hours apart. Coffee with a splash of cream is a great way to postpone a meal.

3. Use only natural substitute sweeteners, like Stevia and/or monkfruit. Almost all other destroy beneficial gut flora.

4. Drink LOTS of water. Often times hunger is really just thirst.

5. Try to get at least eight hours of sleep every night.

6. Power walk at least one hour every day, preferably half hour first thing in the morning with nothing but water before and half hour at night with nothing but water afterwards.

7. Twenty minutes of continuous floor exercises every day will boost your metabolism. Alternate exercises so that all major muscle groups of the body are engaged during your session. This will cause your muscles to grow more mitochondria.

8. Feed your mitochondria. Take ubiquinol with PQQ

9. Take natural anti-inflammatories - Turmeric, Resveratrol, Omega 3s, garlic, etc.

I did keto for about four months then got tired of counting carbs and “managing” the vegetables, so I went zero carb carnivore.

Lately I’ve been eating cheaper cuts of beef, like braised beef shank and chuck roast. Pork chops are good, and lots of eggs.

Which fruits and veggies are healthy, and why?

Bean sprouts make an excellent filler in soup where you would normally have noodles.

Replace half the noodles with sprouts and it will give a nice crunch and you will not notice the noodles.

Also, zucchini and cauliflower make nice filler.

Lots of fiber and vitamins.

Low calories.

I will say to eat food that you really like.

Most of our eating is of foods we are "meh" about. And that means we tend to eat a lot more of them. I have no idea why but that is my observation. Eating food that you like and is really tasty, for some reason you eat less.

“My dogs are my diet buddies- they each get 1/3 of whatever.”

Come to think of it, I DID weigh less back when I had three dogs, LOL!

People more disciplined may disagree, but...

At some point you'll fall off the wagon.

Don't be discouraged...just get back on!

...just don't take too long...or it's a long walk to the wagon.

“I always want some cream and a bit of sugar.”

Those flavored Coffee Creamers are my downfall! BUT - when the flavored bottle is 1/2 empty, I’ve been re-filling it with 1/2 & 1/2 and that’s keeping me happy.

I really don’t have a sweet tooth, but I, too, like my coffee sweet.

That’s one thing I’m working on. Hoping to eventually get it down to just coffee and the 1/2 & 1/2. There are all sorts of chemicals in those creamers. Maybe I’ll switch to the more ‘natural ones’ first...or figure out how to flavor 1/2 & 1/2. It can’t be THAT hard!

I made a batch of the WW basic Veggie Soup this morning and we had that for lunch. Really good, super easy. ZERO Points against me, and I haven’t even really started. ;)

I’m looking forward to this, because I LOVE to cook - and this will allow me to make a lot of the things we LIKE to eat, but with less calories.

I’ve been thumbing through cookbooks and WW recipes on line. I have quite a few ideas lined up right out of the chute.

I also told my fat Beagle that every morning it’s above freezing when we get up, we’re going walking! I wish I had never gotten out of that habit. Don’t know why I did.

I think I had a reverse mid-life crisis. After living SUCH a regimented life in the Army for so many years, and having to account for EVERY calorie to stay at or below weight, and then post-Army always having quite physical jobs in the Civilian World, I think I rebelled - BIG TIME - once I retired.

No. I KNOW I did, LOL! Time to get my act together again.

My husband did the same when he retired after 20 in the Army.

About ten years ago I started changing the way I was cooking. Many less carbs, many more veggies and daily walks. The weight came off.

I keep a timer beside me because most of what I do is office work. At one hour the timer goes off and no matter what I get up and do something that requires me to move.

When I am in the store it often is stock and straighten the shelves. At home... something needs cleaning, count on it. If I am home and it is nice out then I head out doors to weed, dead head or one of a hundred other chores.

One hour of office, ten minutes of something else.

It is amazing what you can get done in ten minutes.

This is counter-intuitive but I would recommend heavy cream instead of coffee creamers or 1/2 & 1/2.

Yes, heavy cream is high in fat and high in calories, but it has virtually zero carbs.

I also recommend Lavazza Oro coffee.

Lavazza ORO

I would also recommend lactose free dairy as a way to reduce carbs. My preference is Fairlife. Fairlife make a chocolate ice-cream which is delicious.

IMHO, walking is the best exercise.

Best wishes for your success.

That’s so funny! I use the kitchen timer all throughout the day!

Mainly, it’s because I’m running to the barn a number of times a day to take care of animals, or there’s something I REALLY need to line off my list for the day, and I’m being a slug. Or, in the summer months, it’s to move the hose around the garden, etc.

Yes, I’m up and on my feet a lot during the course of a day. And you’re right - you CAN get a lot done in just ten minutes!

I am so sorry. That must be awful. Wish I knew how to help you. Walking nearly every day for 45 minutes has helped me so much.
