Happy New Year. We live in a world gone mad. The largest companies are now pretty much run by leftists.
I’ve been a technologist for several decades, and I work as a consultant to one of the largest companies in the USA.
My dog and I wanted a sandwich for lunch today, New Year’s Day. We ordered it on Uber Eats from a deli across town. Uber took my order and my money. When I got there the deli was closed. Uber eventually refunded my money, but their app should have never taken the order in the first place.
Uber as a company IS their app. They crow about the diversity of their programming staff, and can manage to set the app up so it charges less to black own businesses, which is racist and anti-white.
So here’s where we come to the basic liberal ideal for hiring…we all just fulfill a quota of race, gender, religion, and other bullshit attributes that Libs use to separate us and divide us. Our actual talent doesn’t matter.
Their “diversity and inclusion” manager can brag that there are x Indians, y African Americans, z Women and an octopus doing the programming, but how about someone crowing that the application actually works?
Uber spent more time changing their terms of service so users couldn’t sue them or join together in a class action, rather than just creating a company who provides a level of service where they won’t.
Competence doesn’t matter. Customer Service is an afterthought, outsourced to people in other countries who can barely speak the language. If you can get through.
As long as there’s diversity and the liberal causes of the day are covered, that’s the measure of success.
At my company there’s an extensive internal intranet. I read with interest the plans to “re-imagine” (yawn) the technology platform for everyone. They’re talking about betting on cloud technology from two of the large tech companies.
Personally I think that’s a stupid idea, but it’s so many levels above my pay grade it’s nosebleed territory. So they hired a guy to head it up. I’m going over his credentials. They talked about his starting a Black Executive Club at the last place he worked. That’s terrific, but is he qualified for the job that will significantly change this company? Shrug.
I kept reading. The next story was about the entire executive team meeting offsite to discuss - Climate Change. If I were a shareholder (couldn’t GIVE me the shares), I would wonder who decided this was a business issue, and how much of my money was spent on this boondoggle. The cost and the results don’t matter because it’s all about virtue signaling - with shareholder dollars.
And lastly, a story about the new supplier diversity officer. No, I don’t need to know your prices or reliability. Are you black, or a woman, or any other minority? You’re hired.
That’s the essence of leftism. We’re all the same incompetent buffoons. WHAT we are is far more important than what we do.
What amazes me is that we grownups allow this circus to continue, and we actually support these companies with our dollars and our time.
Skynet wouldn’t need to wreck the planet … just manipulate people through their phones till humans just kinda died out.
To me the world started going mad around 9/11/2001, and it’s only gotten worse.
I’m an Uber driver in Kentucky. None of the things you said about the company management make sense to me. All I know is that they are based in San Francisco, where any leftist idea goes. To start with, I still have to enforce all the COVID restrictions on masks and seating, though they don’t seem very relevant to myself or my passengers.
No argument. It just amazes me that this crap is mainstream, and it continues.
Ayn Rand got it right. Time to shrug off this nonsense.
An Uber driver taking me home from a dialysis session pulled over and called the police because I wasn’t pulling my mask up fast enough between sips of coffee. I’ll never use Uber again for rides.
If you ordered it from Uber Eats, why would you then go to the deli?
All I can say in reply to your post is I do my best to vote with my feet and with my wallet. I have never used Uber Eats and never will.
I wouldn’t hang it on Uber that the deli didn’t update their Uber “store”. The whole thing is store driven, the stores tell Uber their hours, and if things fluctuate for holidays or whatever they’re supposed to set that. Uber’s not calling all the 10s of thousands of restaurants on their service every day to make sure nothing random has happened causing them to be closed when Uber thinks they’re open.
As for terms of service, well if you’re in tech you know exactly how much those things mean.
Same nonsense is happening at the company I work for.
That is absolutely correct.
I’ve been with my current company for 2 years now. Last year 2021 we celebrated “Pride Month.” Made me want to puke.
Because it’s raining and the dog wanted to hang his head out the window, so I decided to pick up the sandwich.
Glad you are clearly aware the world has gone stark raving mad and insanity rules.
That means Jesus is coming back soon!
Maranatha!
Sorry to hear that. The days are evil.
Luke 17:28-30
King James Version
28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

Is that a good way to run your app? Rely on the user to tell you If he’s there or not? Could I have been the only person who ordered today and got no response? Shouldn’t the UX have provided for some flag after the first person got hosed? Unfortunately courts have upheld arbitration clauses in TOS, but I’m sure once something extra egregious happens they’ll dissolve.
If the worst thing that happens to you in 2022 is Uber’s leadership and not realizing a restaurant is closed I’d say it’s looking pretty good.
Uh. Sure. Perhaps you should take that small thing as a symptom of a larger problem. What’s the phrase I’m looking for? Oh yeah. Critical thinking.
It’s sad when a private business starts running itself like a federal agency.
