I thought I was the token liberal on FR. I have been called every bad name in the book while residing on FreeRepublic. I let it go.
It doesn’t bother me none. Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel, said Samuel Johnson... Often misunderstood, the statement referred to politicians (Pitt specifically) invoking patriotism as if it’s a badge that their supporters own.
Real patriots don’t have to wrap themselves in a flag and shoot in the air while changing Il Presidente’s name. They will stand up for more important stuff than that.
Real patriots are normal, everyday people who love their country like they love their family - they step up without a fanfare, they do their duty without fuss, they accept the crap jobs as well as the cushy ones, they can see the good and the bad in the people they love and they don’t expect, much less ask for, a medal for serving.
My grandfather served in WW2 and had a horrible war. The first time I ever heard him curse was when someone said to him he should’ve gotten a medal. He said the biggest award he ever needed was the plane ride home to a family that would never have to see what he saw in Nazi occupied Europe.
The greatest patriots in American history were the first colonists. Riding the stink across the Atlantic - not for glory, fame or riches, but for love of God and family.

I also found out that some take umbrage at certain “hand gestures” even though they were perfect for the situation. Not everyone has the sane ribald or dark sense of humor I developed growing up on the south side if Chicago...I guess.😎

I’ve been called lots of names but the one that cracks me up the most is the RINO tag.
If you haven’t been called a liberal troll or a Deep State plant at least once you’re doing it.
When the insults start flying that tells me they have nothing substantial to contribute to the discussion.
