Senate Republican leadership is calling for Alabama GOP candidate Roy Moore to step down as the party's nominee if new allegations of his inappropriate sexual conduct against a 14-year old girl in 1979 are true.
Both Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) released brief statements on Thursday, shortly after The Washington Post published the allegations.
"If these allegations are true, he must step aside," McConnell said.
Gardner's statement echoed that from McConnell.
The allegations against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore are deeply troubling, he said. If these allegations are found to be true, Roy Moore must drop out of the Alabama special Senate election.

Yep, this is absolutely pathetic.
The Rats would try most anything to get their boy in but I’m very suspicious about GOPe being in cahoots because of how quick McConnell and a few other e’s jumped all over this.
It really stinks because there’s been no hint of this type thing with Roy Moore in all those decades.
Do you feel the same way about Louis CK and Harvey Weinstein?
Look, it’s entirely possible this all a made-up smear job. In reading the article, it seemed pretty well sourced and researched - down to checking out whether the mother actually had a court date near Moore’s office in 1979.
I ultimately don’t know how anyone “proves” any of this; none of this is going to court.
So....I dunno.
Can’t I just feel dirty?
Sex assault victims remain quiet for years or decades for a lot of reasons but simply because they won’t be believed.
We can’t have one rule for Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey and another rule for Roy Moore. Otherwise, we’re hypocrites.
A pass to sexual predators, is unthinkable, period. And this involves a 14 year old child. We used to call that pederasty.
Its not a character trait we should tolerate in a US Senator. Far more powerful men have fall for far less.
This isn’t about politics. This is about basic human decency. Moore has a lot to answer here for and she said/he said isn’t simply going to cut it as a defense. Didn’t work for Weinstein and it didn’t work for Spacey.
‘Nuff said.
The GOPe is scared shytless of Roy Moore. I hope Moore stays strong just like justice Thomas did with Anita Hill.
I have seldom seen a better description of the GOPe ... McTurdle, McPain, Ryno, the lot.
Nothing sexual ever happened by the women's own admission
This was the 1970s, the high water mark of the sexual revolution, and the women admitted they were over the Alabama age of consent.
All sounds pretty tame to me.
Remember, we have the last President openly pushing homosexuality on the American people.
Roy Moore has decades of history and track record as a Judge and public servant to evaluate his behavior by and it's impressive
The Washington Post is of utility only to determine what the CIA wants you to believe.
SwampConnell, go and get stuffed.
The penchant of Leftwing newspapers to claim to have discovered some sexual aspects of a Conservative candidate's past, is a major factor in my novel (under a pen name) Return Of The Gods, where the antagonist is the New York Times.
The salient facts, here, appear to be that the Washington Post, which never seems to discover the very recent misdeeds of the Clintons & Obamas, has dredged up a claimed incident that went unobserved, unprotested--and, quite possibly, never even imagined-- for the 38 years between the "events" and the present.
The only real lesson here--I believe--is that Conservatives can expect only myopic hatred from some of the leading vehicles on the Media Left.
Not Strange at all.
If they can’t elect Strange, they will try to elect a Democrat.
I don’t think most Americans, including myself, can IMAGINE the extent of graft and corruption and double-dealing that is going on in Washington D.C. I mean in Congress with BOTH political parties.
Trump has torn open a log full of hornets and rattlesnakes and they are trying to destroy him.
I am convinced that Hillary and the Uranium deal is merely the top of the iceberg. I think Sessions and the other GOP regulars down there as well as the Democrats are in collusion to salvage their globalist connections and payoffs and they have seeded the CIA, FBI, SS, Justice Department, etc. with their co-collaborators. If they are incapable of checkmating Trump with control of congress, I believe they are perfectly capable of trying to take him out, as I believe they took out Antonin Scalia.
Mitch McConnell is a despicable piece of garbage and so are his cohorts down there.
The mother said it was a child custody case so that nails a date and time.
And I'd guess this 14 year old was the child.
Why wasn't the child in school since the mother knew the child wasn't needed in court.
Attorneys scurry all over the place...I'll watch her makes absolutely no sense.
I'll bet that while she's in court, he's totally someplace else...
And just how do you unequivocally refute an allegation from 1979. What were you doing on a specific day in 1979?
Oh now, don't you remember what Tom Foley taught us? In Washington DC it's "The seriousness of the charge..."
As a matter of fact yes I do (check my comments about it). The reason was for reasons such as this. #metoo is not something that should be condoned at all. This is a predictable outcome. Due process!
You can't possibly be serious.
If I come out and make an allegation against you from 30+ years ago are you going to have a lot to answer for?
Why would you expect anything different from Dana who worked for the Bushes?
The RINOs are all reading the same script. Very suspicious.
Thank you, fellas!
McConnell is scum.
People are considered innocent unless proven guilty. He does not have to prove he did not do this. The accuser has to prove he did.
If he is innocent as he says, then stepping down would be wrong and like proof he did it.
Democrats always do this. Truth is they accuse people of what they do all the time.
It's 100% pure partisan smear politics. Don't be a fool.
a lot to answer here for
That's right ... the facts don't matter. Only the seriousness of the allegations.
