A recent study published in the journal Nature Medicine reported that eating cheese — specifically the aged kind containing the compound spermidine, as found in blue cheese — was linked to a longer life in mammals when tested on mice.

“The mice do not only live longer when we supplement spermidine to the drinking water, but they are also healthier in terms of cardiac function,” Frank Madeo, co-author of the study and a professor at the University of Graz in Austria, told Medical Daily.

No, don’t skip the friggin nuts. Eat the blue cheese, bacon, and nuts. If you’re going to skip something, skip the cranberries. They’re just sugar infused carbohydrate bomblettes.

If you eat enough of that blue cheese, you not only grow to be very old, but you also start to get that healthy glow about you...

"I have always like highly seasoned dishes: macaroni prepared by a good Neapolitan cook, olla podrida, good sticky salt cod from Newfoundland, high game on the very edge, and cheeses whose perfection is reached when the little creatures which inhabit them have become visible."

What you typically find on salads are dried cranberries, not fresh. Drying concentrates the sugar. And most dried cranberries have extra sugar added on top of their natural sugar content.

So, as I say, cranberries on salads tend to be unhealthy sugar bombs. Nuts, on the other hand, are relatively low carb and are full of healthy fats that moderate the carbs that they do have.

That’s why it’s smart to skip the cranberries but enjoy the nuts, bacon, and cheese.

Thanks! Good to get that all sorted out.

“Spermidine has been tested and discovered to encourage hair shaft elongation and lengthen hair growth. Spermidine has also been found to “upregulate expression of the epithelial stem cell-associated keratins K15 and K19, and dose-dependently modulated K15 promoter activity in situ and the colony forming efficiency, proliferation and K15 expression of isolated human K15-GFP+ cells in vitro.”

Now, answer me this, should I eat the cheese or rub it on my balding head to regain my original Prince Valiant locks?

Something about cheese, which makes it about Wisconsin and the Packers! Need to merge this into a Beer thread to make it complete!

My former exec chef fed me some Danish Bleu a few months back. Told me, “This is the good stuff!”. So, being a cook who is trying to keep an ‘open palate’, I tried some.

Nastiest substance I have EVER put in my mouth, bar none. Spent the next half hour trying to get the taste out of my mouth. Never again.

“when the little creatures that inhabit it have become visable”

Milbenkase from Germany:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milbenk%C3%A4se

“It is made by flavouring balls of quark (a type of soft cheese) with caraway and salt, allowing them to dry, and then leaving them in a wooden box containing rye flour and cheese mites for about three months. An enzyme in the digestive juices excreted by the mites causes the cheese to ripen.”

If you prefer English cheese, then the same at one time applied to Stilton;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stilton_cheese

“We pass’d Stilton, a town famous for cheese, which is call’d our English Parmesan, and is brought to table with the mites, or maggots round it, so thick, that they bring a spoon with them for you to eat the mites with, as you do the cheese.”[

The article also notes:

“A 2005 survey carried out by the British Cheese Board reported that Stilton cheese seemed to cause unusual dreams when eaten before sleep, with 75% of men and 85% of women experiencing “odd and vivid” dreams after eating a 20-gram serving of the cheese half an hour prior to sleeping.”

I do not know if they produce the substances that cause you to live longer....

I had always figured that Casanova’s description of his favorite types of cheese just referred to the microbiology behind blue cheese rather than actually visible larger creatures like mites, but maybe you are right.
