Ok, a vanity about UFOs no less but....I'll lay it out as I saw it....
On Wednesday 10/15/08 at @ 17:35 I was on the SW corner of Northern Blvd. and 254 Street in Little Neck, Queens, NYC. Conditions were CAVU. My grandson, a friend (40s) and I watched two very small white objects remain motionless at avery high altitude. They were high enough for a commercial jet to pass well below them. At @ 17:52 they disappeared. They did not transit the sky, they just disappeared.
The first time I saw a fox another guy tried to convince me it was a dog.
Neither of these guys were there at the moment of the sightings yet they were both 100% certain that THEY knew what I saw and I didn't. I think that they are both still around and posting on this thread.

You made a simple observation.
You are an amateur astronomer.
You are clearly bright, logical and perceptive.
Yet, all manner of replies have been written seemingly in the tone, attitude and CERTAINTY
that they know absolutely what you saw though you, who were there and SAW—are still wisely tentative about the explanation.
Arrogance gone to seed is one of the standard hallmarks of the naysayers on UFO threads. Sadly.
You are a fairly veteran FReeper, and to my mind, there are no more honest folks than FReepers. I for one believe you. I wont make rationalizations such as swamp gas or jets because I assume you already live by large airports and know the general flight paths and schedules. I have never seen a UFO, but I have had things happen in my life that are unexplainable.
No biggy at all.
Though vanities during election time are a problem and one of JimRob’s standing requests to minimize, avoid.

Most get fed up with the naysayers and avoid posting much but are interested in newsy items that may come up . . . sightings etc.
Trust me...having experienced and/or seen some VERY unusual things while a student at Gettysburg College, I'd be reluctant to second guess another person's observations. I'm just in the area on business, so you, no doubt, are far more familiar with the normal flight paths and appearance of aircraft in the area....

Gettsyburg is one place where I know that there are ‘ghosts’. Their souls’ presence can overwhelm the emotions.
That's still around the time of day when high flying objects can momentarily catch the sun's light and reflect it brightly back to you. Angle of incidence = angle of reflection. My best guesses based on years of astronomical observation is that the objects were either airplanes (headlights or late-day reflections) or balloons. :)
Sorry about the Venus thing. That obviously wasn't what you saw since, as you reminded, the (two) objects you saw were in the east. Anyway, at least I alerted others who may not have known that Venus is currently a very bright evening object in the western sky just after sunset.
Just wanted to clarify, I meant to put that dopey smile sign “:)” after the second paragraph, not the first. In other words, I wasn’t trying to mock you about the sightings.

I've seen the balloons myself. This was different. I don't know what they were, I just know that they are outside my life experience and knowledge.
OK then... still could be satellites or something. I live at an altitude that’s not too far away from NYC, and I remember as a kid I’d go online to this tracker that NASA had that would tell you when the space shuttle or space station or whatever would pass over where you live, and then go outside and watch it pass over. It was pretty bright, to the point where it was clearly visible to the naked eye in the early evening. They have similar sites for some or their satellites and stuff, so next time, if you’re wondering, you can go online to either eliminate or confirm the possibility of it being a NASA satellite. In either case, it’s something that you and anyone else on this thread who’s an amateur astronomer might find interesting.
I’ve watched satellites transit plenty of times. This was different.
